Learning how to learn is a skill that isn't taught outright. However, through examining the self, optimal learning can be achieved. Learning when the mind is pliable rather than stress is the key to learning. Having a still mind helps people reach optimal learning.
Dr.K goes over the reasons which allowed him to study only 2 hours a day but still receive high marks.

-Have a calm and clear mind when learning. Distractions while learning will muddy up what was learned in your memory. Doing studying first thing in the morning is a good example
-Knowledge that was well processed (due to lack of distraction) will become easier to recall
-Coming to class having already understood the subjects will essentially turn class into a review session, which makes the learning process even better

Late to the party but I'm glad I was a psych minor. In Cognitive Psych, you learn basically how the brain learns. With distractions and all that, it pertains to cognitive load. The analogy my professor gave us is we operate like a computer with a finite amount of working memory (what we actively use). When we wake up, it's like a fresh start on a computer, no programs running, no windows open, maximum amount of memory to utilize. As the day goes on, various things will begin to clutter that memory making tasks slower and less efficient. This can be daily stressors, forgetting an assignment, being late to work, etc. For me, meditation allows me to open the task manager and close tasks that are cluttering my memory. There's a lot that goes into remembering info so I'll give a personal analogy that I made:
You have a knowledge map. Everything you know is like pins on that map. As you learn more information you add more pins. Now imagine drawing lines between pins that are related to each other. The more lines you can connect to that pin, the easier it is to make a path so to speak to get there, thus its easier to retrieve that information. Repetition would be adding more pins to a location. Over time, you have a mountain of pins that you can't help but notice. The thing is, just like in real life, "paths" and "clearings" (where the pins are) become overgrown when not used. So one must continue to use paths and finding those pins or risk losing them/they become harder to find. So when learning new information, try to connect it in someway with things that you already know.

On the topic of luck, there is the idea "I make my own luck."
The premise is that if you are looking for something that is based on chance, then putting yourself in situations where the chance of what you want to have happen is more likely, and preparing to be able to recognize and capitalize on a chance when it comes; that's what it means to make your own luck. It's still based on chance, but you could go from 5% likely to have a positive outcome to a 60% chance of positive and a 5% chance of extraordinary

Only on the 2nd day of studying in the morning before work, but what a difference compared to after 8hrs of work.
Yesterday I was reading a paragraph and had to re read every sentence a couple of times.
This morning I almost breezed through it. It is well worth waking up earlier to study because in the end it will save you a shit ton of time.

Nice video. He touches on something similar to a term in neuroscience called the locus of control. Basically it explains that you can do better in school or work or whatever and remain motivated if you believe that you are in control of the outcomes. People who think they are good at something because they are naturally talented don’t always succeed because they feel out of control when they fail. If you believe you’re failure is due to you not trying hard enough then it is easier to get better and succeed later on.

Thank you for sharing this, been dealing with cognitive dissonance and subconscious bias' for a while now and only recently started to hit my stride in life both creatively and emotionally. The source code analogy in particular resonated with me, as I have been trying to "de frag" my mind and output more stuff that bubbles up naturally/intrinsically. The toughest part of all this was to have the ability to reflect and truly do everything I could individually to be happier and progress before looking at any external factors. I love the incorporation of gaming, philosophical application of mindset, and lifestyle all together. Inspires me to say the least :)

I always wondered how I averaged so high in my second year of study compared to my third. I averaged 78% in my second year and 64% in my third year. I always thought it was because I was really competitive and when I had just broken up with my ex girlfriend at the time (who was a high achiever of something like 85% avg) so I wanted to best her in what she did best (which is really toxic come to think of it). This has made me realise that my second year of study is the only year where I actively meditated every morning when I woke up at 5am every day to do so. Referring to what was said at 17:15 I now understand that my lack of focus and the difficulties I came across for my final year was because of the healthiest habit I stopped doing.

    • @alaskabane5340
      @alaskabane5340 Před 2 lety +2

ahhh yes, I had a similar thing happen to me (like your ex-gf) I had a male friend who would treat me like absolute garbage and gaslight me as if I was responsible for how he behaved, so when I finally like stopped talking to him I had this huge urge to be better than him in studies. It was quite toxic mindset (kinda like hustle culture) but still ended up benefiting me with motivation. It's not a good practice, but it works to a small extent.

Growing up and to this day I'm referred to as the "smart one" in the family. I've always countered that I'm not smarter, rather I just "get it" the first time around which gives me a slight advantage. 1-2% which makes a difference in the long run and compounds. I've also, since I can remember, practiced pseudo-meditation (not sure what else to call it) by listening to hours of classical music - probably connected to the belief that classical music makes you smarter and stuff - and movie/game music scores, along with actual meditations, to practice "zenning out". This is first time I've heard anyone suggest a link between the two and it's something that I'd never considered. Can't wait to test this in my next meditation 😁. Great vid doc and thanks for the life changing lesson 🙏

  • @AriaHarmony

This reminds of a time when I got sick and had to stop attending school for about 2-3 weeks, I had not been absent from school in the middle of a semester for that many days in a row before, so I REALLY panicked that I'd be super lost once I do go back, especially math since it was particularly hard for me, so I decided to set down and study what I might have missed.
Once I did start attending guess what? Turns out I studied the material up to over a month ahead LOOOL! I seriously didn't expect that, never noticed how slow we tended to go through the textbook. So like you said the class became review, in fact I got to be more prepared in asking about the things that I didn't understand, when normally I get so overwhelmed that I don't even know what questions to ask during class.

i actually did this, not for studying, but for going to the gym. I have some kind of social anxiety about going outside in general, i figured out that its always early mornings where my brain was completely quiet **as long as you're not sleep deprived** and i was able to get myself outside without having a recurring voice in my head saying "no you can't its better to stay in" or "what if this" or "what if that" constantly making me doubt myself. It's a good time to build discipline because your brain doesn't resist you that much (if not sleep deprived), and if you manage to build on top of that, theoretically, you're pretty much set.
*I say as long as you're not sleep deprived cause when you dont get enough sleep and you wake up that early, you're kind of still in a weird half delirious dream state where your mind is telling you that cereal is technically a soup

I studied only for exams and like 5-6 days before them too. Played videos games/went out the rest of the time. Now I have a successful business venture and couldn't be happier. What I learned from all this is - It's not about the amount of time/effort you put into studying, it's about the quality of information you retain for years after that. I can honestly say 80-90% of the things I studied in college, university and both of my master degrees have no real world applications, the remaining 10% however, have served me well.
