  • "Our Great Virginia" became the official traditional state song of Virginia in 2015. Sung to the traditional tune "Oh Shenandoah," with music arranged by Jim Papoulis, its lyrics were written by Mike Greenly. By a vote of 39-0 in the Virginia state senate, "Our Great Virginia" was designated the official state traditional song, and "Sweet Virginia Breeze" was designated the official state popular song of Virginia (the bill was signed into law by the governor effective 7/1/15). "Our Great Virginia” (lyrics by Mike Greenly and arranged by Jim Papoulis) is sung to the tune of “Shenandoah.”
    “Carry Me Back to Old Virginia” was the original state song of Virginia (adopted in 1940), but in 1997 the designation was changed to the “state song emeritus.”

    • @RevWarrenJohnson
      @RevWarrenJohnson Před 5 lety +6

      The song "Oh, Shenandoah" did not reference either the Shenandoah River or the Shenandoah Valley (both in Virginia). The situation of the song takes place in the Midwest, along the Missouri River, a long way from Virginia. The Shenandoah mentioned in the song was most likely a Native American Chief of the Oneida Tribe, whose daughter was a love interest of the person singing the song.

    • @error.418
      @error.418 Před 2 lety

      They tried to use the original Oh Shenandoah back in 2006, but it was soundly rejected. So then they rewrote the lyrics and we got this travesty in 2015. It didn't make sense to use Oh Shenandoah to begin with since it was never about the Shenandoah Valley or Shenandoah River, it was a song to Chief Shenandoah, from eastern Pennsylvania, about his daughter. What a hot mess.

    "Oh Shenandoah", melody of "Our Great Virginia", is one of the most favorite U. S. songs (Shenandoah Waltz also). And Virginia is the first state where I had visited. Therefore both my favorite things unified is grateful for me. Thank you for this posting.

    Nice song. I don't live there but saw a program on the Civil War with James Robertson who described the process of getting this song approved. He was funny in that he said never again will he go through that process in politics. I think the old Va song was too much of a reminder of what the State used to be in the old South so it was wiped away. But Robertson was determined to come up with a new suggested State song and this was it....very cool when you know the history of some things. His book After the Civil War looks quite good too....might have to check it out...

      This kid out here making up numbers. It ain't great.

    I must have been sleeping when the General Assembly adopted this dreck. It’s a terrible adaptation of a classic folk song. There were such better alternatives: Susan Greenbaum’s lovely “Virginia, the Home of My Heart,” the late, great Page Wilson’s “Virginia,” or UVA’s Alma Mater, “Virginia Hail, All Hail,” which really isn’t specific to the school (all of which can be found on CZcams). I am embarrassed for my adopted home.

      Because the states are more like a bunch of countries banded together than just one therefore we each have our own history and culture
