  • If you have enough money to purchase a few composition books, you can homeschool your children! Even if you have a little more money, why not use cheap composition books for your main "worktexts" and then have money to spend on the fun stuff, or at least on some really good books?
    You can get the lowdown here, and then go over to my blog at momdelights.co... and catch a post with links and an entire gallery of different ways to use composition books for homeschooling.
    I am Sherry Hayes, Christian, homeschooling mom of 15, and I'm on a mission to lift up women in their sacred calling to being wives, mothers, and homebuilders for the glory of God.

    You always have wonderful information. I am helping to homeschool 2 of my grandchildren. We just bought 2 sets of encyclopedias - 1944 and 1959. We will also be using our Bibles and replicas of the founding documents. I gave their parents a supply list; notebooks, pencils and art supplies 😀

    This is wonderful. You are empowering homeschoolers to do what called has called them to do without over-complicating things! I love it. This year we are doing all of our language arts with copywork. The kids will pull out vocabulary, notice grammar usage, journal their thoughts on the passage, etc. All with just having t purchase a notebook. (And I did decide to purchase them each a copywork book to save myself the time of searching for quality passages each week). Thank you for your care in encouraging other homeschool parents.

    So true! ;-) I felt so inadequate when I first started 10 years ago. But I asked the Lord, please show me how to homeschool and make it fun! He didn't disappoint me. I knew one thing: I wanted to teach them the way my elementary teachers taught me years ago...and that is keeping it SIMPLE...pencils, paper, crayons or paints, library books, and lots of reward stickers! I remember getting little birthday certificates, cupcake scratch and sniff stickers and dollar store prizes as part of my "schooling." The curriculum when I was in school didn't matter to me because I remember the love and attention and all the little things that even homeschooling curriculum has gotten away from . Recess. I don't have an old school bell like they had in the one room school house, but making time for recess is just as important. "Red rover, red rover..." haha

    Also when you told the story of the mom who was determined to homeschool her kids got me thinking that I really want to search and find those mamas out there because I have collected books from thrift stores since my daughter was born five years ago and I have a little library of my own of good books that would be awesome to share with somebody who could use them. As far as planning our homeschool this year, I have been praying for grace toward frugality and also effectiveness, so thank you for mentioning that we often overcomplicate learning. The main big purchase splurges my husband okayed were ordering a 9-month subscription to Campfire Curriculums' unit studies ($17.99 per month for a new unit study for your family each month), and a one-year subscription to Commonplace Quarterly (Charlotte Mason magazine) so that I can understand the CM method more practically for today's homeschool.
    However, we also purchased a 15 volume lot of The Golden Treasury of Knowledge books on your recommendation, and the Audubon nature encyclopedia set.
    We are one of those families who has been blessed to be off of facebook for three years And counting, and who only has internet through daddy's phone (and hotspot) when he is home from work so that our life has become alot more peaceful. But it has also freed up the finances so that we can splurge on a little bit here or there because there's that internet/ phone money being used a little more valuably (his phone is paid for by his company so mommy just uses a tracfone).
    Thank you again for sharing ❣️ You make it look so doable!

    Hi Sherry,
    Thank you for mentioning at the end that He who sits in the heavens will laugh. Praise God that nations will someday see they are just men. God has really impressed on me recently that though Surgeon is wonderful and useful in my study of Scripture, He is not better spoken than God. He cannot improve upon God's Word in that sense and my feasting on God's Word straight from the Bible is more satisfying and life-giving than getting fed second hand. Not that they are worthless all together, they are just no substitute.

    I just recently came across your grammar books that you have so kindly made free for download. I plan on using these in our homeschool this year. I wondered though, is there any instruction book for the 'teacher' to use? I noticed some of the pages, for example, may say things like 'remember to use quotation marks' but I did not see any instruction for the child in how to use quotation marks. Just one example. Basically just wondering if there were any accompanying teacher book or instruction to go with these wonderful books?

    • @MomDelights
      @MomDelights  Před 3 lety

      I'm sorry, but there really isn't. If you look up something like "First" or "Primary" language lessons by C. C. Long you may find an old teacher's manual of sorts, but I did not follow the originals that closely. I think the idea is that, as something new pops up, we can stop and explain things and move on. It worked for many, many years and does quite well with tutoring, as opposed to classroom teaching.

    • @MomDelights
      @MomDelights  Před 3 lety +1

      I think it depends on the person and the situation. Since we have followed this regimen for some years, I find my older children often choose excellent books on their own, so I try not to fix things that aren't broken :P. However, there are some who need to have goals set before them. For these, I try and make up a list of books that I either think they need to round them out, or that I think will be to their liking, or I think will give them much needed food for thought. Sometimes this will be a practical book such as Teen Guide to Homemaking, or The Useful Book. Other times it will be a biography of someone with excellent character, such as Elizabeth Elliot, Jim Elliot, or someone else. When I assign the books, it may be that we have an actual date for completion of a certain amount, but as we go along I am willing to edit that according to how quickly they end up reading or how much they actually enjoy and are taking in the information so that I will not want to hurry them. I know this is probably as clear as mud; but perhaps you can still glean something useful from it. Blessings!
