The Beatles - Real Love (New Clean Vocals Mix 2023)

- This proved to be more problematic than I thought it would be.
The original demo is a lot slower than the 1995 version so you either have to slow down the instrumental or speed up the vocals to match. I decided to do what Jeff Lynne did and thats to speed up the vocals to match the instrumental.
The problem then is you have higher pitched vocals which to me, always sounded weird. But if you keep the pitch as the demo, it doesnt match the new instrumental... so I guess it is what it is.
Im not really happy with this edit and wasnt going to upload it, but I saw quite a few ppl in the Free As A Bird video comments requested Real Love... so here it is.
I took the vocals from the original demo and did my best to clean them up and remove as much of the noise as possible.

The Beatles should apply Peter Jackson's MAL software to FAAB and RL then release all three final records in an EP and 12". EXCELLENT JOB on this one!

I think the Beatles more than likely have plans to revamp the Anthology series, using the MAL software not only on FAAB and RL, but on the other (particularly older) material, like the Quarrymen material, Decca Sessions, BBC material, concert material, etc. The remixed FAAB and RL will be big selling points for people to buy the new Anthology series, so I don't think they would use those songs on a standalone EP. I mean, we might get an EP, but it will coincide with Anthology album/CD releases. Just my opinion.
And Grow Old With Me!! And clearly that EP should be called "For Paul" like the original cassete.
This is truly the best post-breakup Beatles song.

I've actually grown to prefer Now and Then. It works best as a Beatles song imo, whereas others definitely feel more like John solo songs (especially Free As a Bird).
100%. George's contribution took it from a great song into probably one of the Beatle's best, definitely felt the lack of George (and his creative input) on Now and Then, almost makes me with they just released it as a "Lennon-McCartney" instead of replacing Real Love as "the last Beatles song.
Now and then was the best ending the beatles could have had in my opinion, but i wish they kept the original prechorus, it was the best part! @@Y-two-K

John's voice actually sounds ok here although we all know that it was speeded up in the version by the Beatles. Back in the day, it was not unusual for them to speed up or slow down the vocals (Strawberry Fields Forever comes to mind). The fact that we can hear John's vocals clearly in your version certainly improves the song, imho. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Funny story. I had this song stuck in my head since I was a toddler, never knowing it was Lennon/The Beatles. Then way later in my late teens, gettin' into Beatles as teens do, I came across it on Anthology 2. And it was like... "it was YOU GUYS the whole time. One of my earliest musical memories. It was YOU!"
Well done! John's voice sounds great! George's guitar work was outstanding in this song. We lost both John and George way too soon...
I've always thought this was easily the stronger track over Free As A Bird

This is proof what a "Fool" John was. He had no spine to stand up like a man and reject this untalented pariah's last name.

John's lead is a little buried in the verses, but this is a dream come true and a prayer answered! This is still the last great Beatles' record. Wish this had all the hype that went along with "Now & Then".

Oh I am SOOOOO happy you decided to upload this. I LOVE it! "Real Love" is one of my favorite Lennon/Beatles songs (although with Harrison's slide work, it sounds more like a Harrison-produced Lennon song), and in this edit I heard John's voice in a whole new way. Fantastic!!! I've been a Beatles fan since around 1968, and the web has been a real boon to folks like me who've gotten to hear so many songs in so many new and exciting ways-hearing parts you couldn't hear before, and so on. This is a real treat. THANK YOU so much for doing this!

I noticed you used the vocal take Lynne used and also you're using the '95 mix as a base. I'd recommend trying to use the Lennon Anthology take - it's much better. I used the 5.1 mix of the 2015 version on the 1+ DVD for the instrumentals.

If you allow me to give you some advice, i would add some compression to John's vocal, so it doesn't sound so loud at times. And maybe a little bit of reverb/delay in the chorus, but that's up to taste.

This sounds great, thanks for the work. Perhaps don't be so afraid to 'treat' the original vocal performance because the imperfections become so clear in this version, for example around 0.52. A bit of reverb wouldn't hurt. Still, a great mix!

You did a real great job! I may be wrong, but wasn't the Anthology version even more sped-up? I didn't like what the pitching did to Lennon's voice there at all, but in your version it sounds just right. You dubbed it absolutely precisely as well, that's often an underestimated point, also. I don't know if it would have been been possible for you to mix Lennons voice a bit louder but maybe you had to find a compromise between background noise and voice level. In the end this is an excellent work and it definitely sounds way better than the 1995 version. Thank you for that!

Wow. You really brought out more clarity in John's lead vocal; and, it's just beautiful. I would suggest following Lynne's mix a bit more closely. Specifically, make the guitars louder in the mix and make the harmonies just slightly louder in the mix too. I suspect you wanted to highlight your stellar efforts to clean up John's voice...MAJOR kudos for that too: I can't believe what a HUGE improvement this is. But, that huge & dynamic "Beatle Sound," that Lynne created, is muted in this...This, out of the three "Threetles" records, is the best one (though "Free Is A Bird" is really good too)...This would have been a number one hit in their day....I love the way you mixed the voice at the end too: better than Lynne's fade-out! Congratulations!~

Excellent work, dutchbrit84. Sounds really good, and I know was no small effort. However, the vocal sounds a bit dry....perhaps it could use a bit of 'sweetening', with just a bit of reverb. Not a lot, but just a touch would make it really soar.

He'd never have let it out without some echo, double tracking and delay on it. He sounds great but that would be a more realistic version.
This sounds so much better. Unlike "Free As a Bird", this song doesn't lend itself well to John's voice being distorted. Without it, it really feels and sounds like they actually did this together.
I have NO DOUBT that John would be fine with them doing what they did with his posthumous songs. I'm sure the ego part of his personality would love it that they're keeping his legacy alive by keeping him in the public spotlight. However, I think John would've added a little more to the arrangements somehow. In places, it sounds more like something off of "Walls and Bridges".

I could never dare to ask anything extra or different to the Greatest Band of All Times. In my opinion, everything made by them was perfect in its own time and beauty. But if I had only one wish, I would ask the lamp genie to grant me only this: Real Love and Free as a Bird remastered with John's improved voice, released officially by The Beatles themselves.

Somehow this "clean vocal version" works better than for "Free as a bird" .... maybe it's me, but I really like the "flangery" effect in Free as a bird.
John recorded the demo in the key of D. The finished product is sped up to the key of E. Hence the slight difference. But it's John.

this sounds like an imitator from a tribute band, there are a lot of details that sound like it's not John's original demo or the version from Lennon Anthology.
putting that aside, I think they made a mistake speeding it up so much, I prefer the song at its original speed and pitch. take the anthology 2 cd version, open it in goldwave or any audio editing software and slow it down to 93 or 94 % of the final speed. I think that's the sweet spot.
I always liked this song, but it sounds more like The Traveling Wilburys featuring John Lennon, not the Beatles.
