As a fellow female vet (US Army), this makes me proud. Military trained us well. Esp with firearms we had to demonstrate expert mastery. It was in the assailant's best interest to take her seriously.

I was in the military. We did not have to demonstrate “expert mastery.” Most of the women barely passed and had to retake the test multiple times. All you had to do was get a certain amount of shots on a life size silhouette from 30’ to pass the test. And we did security.

As a fellow vet, I can say that stories like this make me proud. But, I am also sad that this happened as she said in America. When we train, it is with the idea of fighting an enemy outside our borders, not within them.
The police reported this as a "disturbance"...its mind boggling what we have to deal with in an American criminal justice system.

@@maddumass I grew up in NW Indiana, I could literally walk to the South Side of Chicago. I commuted to the Loop for twenty years and saw plenty of awful neighborhoods. However, I was never as repulsed, frightened, saddened, ??? as when when husband and I took a wrong turn somewhere in Philly about 20 years ago on vacation. I think we were on 30 and ended up somewhere on a brick lined street and old rail tracks running down it. I remember thinking our Founding Fathers must be turning in their graves. Other than that, it was great vaca in PA.

Think of the people who have killed others for knocking on the wrong door or driving into the wrong driveway, or for perceived cheating in a game. Things escalate because the average person (and most people are average), armed with a weapon, lacks the discipline to figure out the facts before firing. Too, too many people equate "might" with "right" and our streets are bloodier for it.

Got robbed at gunpoint when I was 16. That was the turning point that taught me so early that life can be over so fast. Aside from the nightmares, Its hard to go anywhere or do anything since without being very aware of my surroundings at all times. Been carrying since. Rather fight than be a statistic on a board somewhere.

Louisiana once passed a law allowing you to shoot a carjacker. Obviously that is only if he actually manages to get into the car. Not sure if the law still exists.
