    From the mad scientist's lab, bigtime!
    This is the third kCathedral, and probably the final one before I launch into lots of other types of reverbs. I've got three lined up already, but this is where I figure out what the kReverbs are about.
    The first one was like this: one knob, dry/wet (a 'wetness' knob, in that the center is full volume for both) and a 5x5 Householder matrix. Put it out, people had fun but it was kind of metallic. Not really ready. So I kept working.
    The second one was one knob, dry/wet as before, greatly improved sonics. I designed new ways to generate and test the reverb algorithms, churned through millions of possibilities, measured and tested and cooked up a new and unique Cathedral algorithm. Also, tried a different sort of early reflections. Still a one-knob, but sounded a lot better.
    Then… I did even more algorithm testing. And invented CrunchCoat. And then DeRez3. And then CreamCoat, a method for using that technique while keeping the downsample 'gears' from seeming unrealistic. And explored the usefulness of varying regeneration. And found that when varying downsampling it's useful to adjust regen. And discovered Discontinuity! And tried using it in the feedback loop of the reverb, to dial in realistic huge-space sustain at synthetic loudnesses.
    So basically this ought to work for the genre going forward. If you thought CreamCoat sounded cool, that's the very primitive version compared with this, still a 5x5 Householder (already an unusual choice) but this time selected from more millions of options with new metrics for analyzing them. This time there's a predelay, a Discontinuity (says Top dB), a wide ranging Regen control (for realistic RT60s: this one happens to not go infinite). And that DeRez control you saw on CreamCoat, but this time it's on a BIG reverb.
    I feel this ought to work really well for many purposes: just listen to it. It's still trying to be an Airwindows-style reverb rather than 'front and center instrument for making all possible sounds', but within the context of cathedral-style deep verb, I think this obliterates the first two AND completely abandons the 'over-simplified' thing I tried valiantly to make work.
    Hope you like it, let me know what you think.

    I just wanna say, after cream coat and kplate this really fulfills 99 percent of my reverb needs. Amazing stuff Chris.

      I bet if you put discontinuity into cloud coat you could get that cool Chris Cornell overdriven slap back thing with minimal regen.

    I'm just turning back in after close to a year. First and foremost, fantastic work as always-- thanks for everything you share with us all. Can you say more about what this ConsoleX thing is/will be/do? Or is there a place where it's already been addressed?

    The Surge patch is very cool as well. Would you upload your patches somewhere? That would be awesome.

    • @airwindows
      @airwindows  Před měsícem +3

      Let me make more. Also, it's more important for you to watch how I made them so you can make your own

    • @LYSHEmusic
      @LYSHEmusic Před měsícem

      @airwindows! Sure! Surge is already my go-to synth, but I'm not too fluent with it yet. I'd be happy to watch dedicated videos on Surge programming from you, but I can't always watch a whole stream.
      If you decide to edit and upload these episodes, it would be another great addition to your channel, if you choose to do so. However, your channel already provides great value, so I wouldn't complain if you choose not to :)

    It would be helpful if the plugin UI showed a tooltip or description of the controls somewhere. Top dB and DeRez for example aren't intuitive without watching this video. The effect sounds great tho :D

    Wonderfull. Thank you. I've been trying to find a very short (plate-ish) reverb to use on vocals instead of slapback delay. But after trying many, MANY...I still haven't found one that works very good. Was wondering if you have any plans to try your new curve on a ultra short reverb?

    the sound difference between the new and old is really amazing. Got to try it and looking forward to the rest of the verbs. Why does lowering the sample rate make the cathedral sound bigger?

    • @airwindows
      @airwindows  Před měsícem

      It's like you're pitch-downing the whole cathedral, so the apparent size gets larger as the sample rate goes down. Works the other way too.

    I like the sound in the demo, but for some reason kCathedral in my session sounds strange and very different from kCatheral2.
    I hear a long low and low-mid tail and everything higher has pretty short decay. That's with Regen at 0.5 and other settings at defaults.
    Tested vst in Reaper, Win11. Not tried with Consolidated yet.
    Does anyone has the same problem?

      @@rosegold-beats yep, 88.2 and 96khz sounds much better. is this by design?

    • @LYSHEmusic
      @LYSHEmusic Před 29 dny

      kCathedral3 still sounds low-heavy at 96khz compared to kCathedral2. and compared to Bricasti IRs.

    Irrelevant. Much more important is to have authentic short\close\cab reverb.
