- NOTE: In the video I say I think camping may be permitted on Hughes Mountain, it is NOT.
I think I’ve hiked the most dramatic landscape in Missouri, the Devils Honeycomb Trail in the Hughes Mountain Natural Area. Unique geologic formations left over from ancient volcanoes in Missouri in the St. Francois Mountains create these amazing rock formations known as the Devils Honeycomb. Hiking to the Hughes Mountain high point you’ll find one of Missouri’s geological wonders which makes for one of the best Missouri day hikes.

Missouri continues to surprise me it's amazing and surprising geologic formations. What's your favorite rock formation you can hike to?
Lower Rock Creek Canyon
Castor Shut-Ins
Lee Bluff
Mill Stream Gardens
@@alanpeterson4939 thank you!
I haven’t been there, but grand gulf state park in far south Missouri seems like a cool place to visit
@@waterrocketlab151 oh nice! Haven’t been there either. Sounds like it’s worth checking out. Elephant Rocks is probably the most prominent rock formations to play around at. Not really a hike though. It’s more of a state park, but still fun.
@@waterrocketlab151 it's amazing. Hard to describe what you're looking at
My mom lived in a tiny small home back in the late 40's. A house my grandfather built. Go down the back side of the mountain, cross a small river/stream and in those houses, next to Irondale. My mom used to climb that all the time and play with friends. They called it "Big Rock" back then. I haven't visited in a very long time. I fly-fished a few of those streams.
Wow! What an amazing cool place to grow at. I’ll bet a lot of fun was had up there
Love this trail. Low effort high reward. We like to take the family to devils honeycomb, elephant rock, and pilot knob all on the same day with a break at the Caledonia mercantile for ice cream and treats.
That sounds like an awesome day trip! And I agree, Devils Honeycomb really is high reward
I’ve never heard of this. The Saint Francois Mountains truly have so much to offer!
I know! It’s definitely a cool spot
Thanks for posting this video. I'm going to add this to our to-do list.
Of course! It’s definitely worth it. Short, but you can play around up there which is nice 🤙
I visited a couple years ago, it’s quite an unusual place and worth the visit. The diversity of animals for such a small area is stunning. From what I recall I immediately heard then saw a golden-winged warbler in the scrubby area adjacent to the parking lot. Scorpion, eastern fence lizard, black racer, and a vivid southern (Osage) copperhead coiled
In a pile of rocks up on top, Southern leopard frogs were also croaking in a wet trickle on the hillside. For anyone interested in geology, the rhyolite formations and barrens are a must see.
That’s amazing you were able to spot some much wildlife. Truly an awesome experience 🤙
I love this place. Very unusual. The view from the top is one of the most spectacular in missouri. We also saw the big walking lizards. Can't remember the name
