Dimitrova in top form!! I doubt if we will ever hear such a voice again. Agility, power, volume, 3 octave range and a vocal colour which, as BetuliaLiberata says, is so recognizable even from the first one or two notes. RIP Ghena, The opera lovers of the world will always remember you.

Although Sutherland probably will always be the standard of comparison for this scena given the almost superhuman performance she gives on her recording, we must recognize that this is a singer performing live on stage and bringing both the needed voice size and dramatic singing required by this role. What an achievement. In particular, the Fammi ridar and cabaletta are superb and so dramatic. Brava Ghena!
Wilson Watt Sutherland could never do this on stage. Dame Joan had a big beautiful voice but not the killer instinct for Orabella or Nebucco, Lady Macbeth. These two great ladies were incredible in their prime indeed. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

It's a weird standard, as it was a one-off in studio..
Sutherland's interpretation is extremely virtuosic and lyrical, Dimitrova's is of unparalleled dramatic power (as in everything she sang). Two extremely different vocalities and, for different reasons, both wonderful! I wish I could hear them both live.
Vi prego non paragoniamo la Grandissima Dimitrova con la Sutherland in quest'aria. La Sutherland a parte una coloratura ottima e delle belle note sovracute per il resto era così così. Aveva una dizione orrenda a dire poco. Ho avuto la fortuna di sentire la Dimitrova in Forza del Destino in Arena e garantisco che la voce non solo era enorme ma ricchissima di sfumature. Ha regalato dei pianissimi memorabili , aveva una tecnica di canto di prima qualità. Per governare un tal volume vocale ci vuole tanta tanta tecnica. Ricordiamoci che la lirica non è solo note acute e fiorettature ma sentimento e passione e in questo la Dimitrova era IMMENSA
Eres tu el que compara a la Dimitrova con la Sutherland. para ti mejor es la Dimitrova, quizás para papeles veristas, sea mejor la Dimitrova, pero para mi y para muchos la Sutherland en el bel canto, ha marcado un hito como la mejor del siglo.

disregard her as much as you want, Sutherland sounded like a maiden of great beauty with a sword in her hand. Dimitrova can sound a bit like a bakery owner with a rolling pin in her hand. I love her for what she is but the two different women sound, wait for it, like two different women. That used to be ok.

One thing that I loved never had to worry about with Ghena was that she never had an intolerable wobble on her high notes like most other gargantuan-voiced sopranos. Her high notes' vibrato is tight, fast and exciting.

Dimitrova, as has always been her wont, adheres to the highhest principle of the technique of operatic singing: seamless legato, clean, fearless attack, cryster clear enunciation, text book consonant, not to mention a considerable amount of dramatic understanding.
Yo vi esas funciones en el Liceu de Barcelona, En esa temporada cantó Attila y Nabucco. Yo tenía poco más de 20 años y nunca había oído en directo una voz tan gigantesca como la de Dimitrova. Recuerdo que en Nabucco, al final del acto II, con la frase "Ma del popolo di Belo

Amazing, really. So difficult to sing, but Dimitrova did here a show-piece with the notes and what you want to hear in this part. Great :)

Sorry there is nothing beautiful about Dimitrova's voice. From what I have read it was quite large and I am sure in the right roleshe was exciting live

Actually I like her OK and she is at times an exciting singer but her voice is not particularly beautiful.

I think that Dimitrova was born to sing Abigaille and Odabella. Although she didn't sing the last one so often in her career.
Accora che questa grande artista...in questi ruoli soprattutto del primo Verdi...sia stata poco Ascoltata dalle nuove leve...io ebbi la fortuna di ascoltare lei e ...Maria Chiara. Che artiste signore del bel canto per la Dimotrova poi il supporto di una cantante esperta come Gina Cigna la portò sempre più in alto .Poco diva era adorata dal suo pubblico. e anche dagli orfani ...delle cantanti del passato. La Fortuna poi si riprese tutto quello che le aveva elargito, minando la salute di questa artista sublime... popolare, nel significato più vero, cultura antropologica...Aida/ Lady Macbeth/Turandot/Madame Butterfly/Elisabetta/ Alceste/Norma...Ecc e Ecc si nutre la storia del melodramma...che non è nato per le ricche prime e il Pubblico d' Élite ...ma per Tutti, per questo spopola in tutto il mondo.
In Arena ogni volta che cantava finiva fra i boati che li sentivano fino in Cina.
Il suo canto è epico...ebbi una discussione proprio con la sua Maestra ...che non si rendeva conto che questa artista era intrisa anche di una musicalità ...quella bulgara che ha sfumature che lei porta pari apri nei suoi fiati mai gridati....ma sorretti da un ritmo che la musica di Verdi esige, del resto la Strepponi in questi ruoli, ci lasciò la voce e la carriera.
Dal vivo ..., la voce era molto più bella...e se tutto filava liscio...(.a volte si trovava cambiato il cast quasi tutte le recite,scelta che giova forse alle casse dei Teatri, ma lascia gli Artisti ...nella scia del pressappoco)...stupiva per l'omogeneità negli equilibri delle cabalette...e una spavalderia che non è esibizionismo...ma gioia di restituire a quello che si canta ...il giusto peso che riscatti moti Ruoli celeberrimi, dall'usura della routine.

Ghena sure is a powerhouse. those high notes are to die for. it surprises me to see such adept coloratura in such a colossal voice. this is a voice truelly ment for Turandot.
even so, I have to give the trophy to Sutherland on this piece. her style is just as powerful yet more graceful and her voice sort of 'sails' melodically over the audience like a thunderstorm. not to mention taking the last E up the octave with is like WHOA.

Yes Sutherland had those spectacular notes above the staff , but dimitrova had that incredibly powerful bottom voice as well which is very useful in Verdi. Sutherland only recorded that Aria but never sang the role on stage. dimitrova sang it many many times and probably better than anybody else who ever sang it in a theater. Sutherland had a really big big voice but Ghena's was huge. Staggeringly big. This is very very exciting singing. this is not to detract from the truly spectacular recording that Sutherland made of this aria though.
John Roberts I agree with your Assessment.Sutherland‘s Recording was a Studio Recording with all the advantages of It.Ghena‘s was a Performance Recording and I found hers much more dramatic.
Sutherland for belcanto, and Dimitrova for verismo ... both different sopranos, different schools, different periods ...

Oh my word I used to know Dimitrova personally. What a force to be reconned with. As stunning as her singing is here there is no fuller rounder sound that Sutherland produced and a more powerful sound. Sutherland just had the ability to combine bel canto with dramatic singing. Dimitrova always had this bit of hard edge to her voice although I love her singing immensely.8

ALSO, put these Wagnerians sopranos (Gwyneth and Schnaut) to SING Abigailles, the REAL TEST for a REAL DRAMATIC SOPRANO...watch them crash and burn. Dimitrova said it herself and i quote: " The test for a dramatic soprano is Abigail-Verdi...if they cannot sing it they are Dramatic mezzos" ALL these Wagnerian sopranos you mentioned are very 'loud' because they sing all that Wagner that makes them yell all the time. They cannot handle even NORMA...DIMITROVA COULD. I am sorry, I proved you wrong

dame joans sings santo di patria with a lot more brilliant coloratura and takes a powerful top e natural that knocked my socks off. dame joan's high notes were so big when she recorded this aria that the engineers at decca had to place her away from the microphones. the decca engineer never could capture the true sound of dame joan's voice. you have to hear her in person to get the size and dynamics of her phenomenal voice..

Dimitrova had the most amazing technique EVER! The woman has the biggest voice in recorded history and she sings fast fiery coloratura, never sounds stresses on FF...spins amazing PP that one might thinkit's a soubrette and her amazing colour of voice that is INSTANTLY recognizable, which for me is super important. I hate sopranos that sound like 100 others in the herd, it does not matter if they are great technicians or big voices or whatever...if I cannot pick them form 1 note I hate them!

No, No, NO! Callas' voice was never ugly. I love her unique throbbing tone. I always find her voice riveting and beautiful..even in the 1960's.
Callas is La Divina and her voice is VERY beautiful to my ears.
If Callas had recorded this aria in 1949, she would give Sutherland some competition in this aria.
Dimitrova, a great Turandot is not even close in bravura in this aria.
But not to hers
coloratura IS a fach. it is a technique, but it is also a fach. you can't expect 95% of dramatic sopranos to have near the agility for this role, even with solid coloratura technique

Well, compared to Sutherland or Callas, no, Dimitrova was not especially adept at coloratura. But compared to other similarly large-voiced sopranos like Marton or Jones or la Nilsson herself, then I would have to say Dimitrova acquitted herself admirably--i.e., better than any of them could have managed. But just my opinion! : )
after Sutherland everyone sounds much well.......much 'LESS" but this is really good...I admire this effort a lot....but well, nobody is as great as La Stupenda
I worship Joan Sutherland but she wouldn't have been able to perform the full opera on stage. Joan Sutherland is not a Verdian singer, apart from Gilda in Rigoletto.
I like both singers for what they do. But Ghena sings with balls.

Nilsson's voice was more laser like and Ghena's more like a cannon. Maybe the ;largest soprano to have voice to have left recordings is Gertrude Grob-Prandl.
But the performance here is utterly great for size and flexibility.

L'interprétation de Dimitrova est, comme toujours, ahurissante et torrentielle. Toutefois 2 remarques :
1) L’enregistrement tourne trop vite : au diapason, nous sommes un demi-ton trop haut par rapport à la réalité : écoutez les répliques de la basse et vous en serez convaincus.
2) Qui sont les partenaires ?
Pour entendre dans le ton, cherchez sur youtube la prestation de Dimitrova à Sofia avec Ghiuselev.

Nilsson had Fs. I'm sure they shattered a lot of glass whenever she got up to them. Haha. She used to say she'd warm up singing Der Holle Rache sometimes.
it's a great voice, but she's singing this like it's verismo. Verdi is ELEGANT. even the most dramatic passages must be legato without any banging into the lower register.

E' stupido di cercar di paragonare la Sutherland alla Ghena! E' vero che la Joan ha facili le note alte del testo... ma quando scende è di un suono vuoto e senza colore... semplicemente Attila non era una opera per lei.. come non era Macberh e Nabucco... Invece Ghena poteva cantare veramente questi ruoli magnificamente... Credo che solo Mancini nella registrazione storica della Rai del 1951 con un favoloso Giulini arriva a la perfezione della Ghena, ma non la supera... La vocalità della Ghena e la sua tecnica era ed è ancora insuperabile!!!!!
Si ho sentito la Mancini e ti ringrazio per avermela fatta conoscere, partendo sempre dal presupposto che bisognerebbe sentire dal vivo, trovo la Mancini tecnicamente perfetta, non so se abbia o no superato Ghena, ma ti posso dire che a me è piaciuta in tutto. Forse Ghena ha un tantino di tremolo sugli acuti estremi, che la Mancini non ha. Interpretazione da manuale, voce tagliente ma morbida...insomma, cosa chiedere di più?

True, her high notes were frequently not beautiful. Thrilling, yes; fluttery, perhaps; forced, sometimes. But one doesn't always want beauty, does one? Beautiful singing becomes rather bland after awhile. And one doesn't associate roles like Turandot, Gioconda, Abigaille, etc. with beautiful tone. There's something to be said for ugly voices like Gencer, Olivero, Dimitrova, and Callas. Voices can be beautiful in one or two ways but the ways in which voices can be ugly are infinite. ; )
Sutherland sings if better. She puts THREE high E's in it on top of the high C's. That makes it more exciting.
The top E's are HUGE, maybe bigger than Dimitrova's C's since they are higher notes. They are perfect, no strain, effortless.
Sutherland's coloratura is perfect. And her middle and lower voice is outstanding since she recorded this when she was very young.
CZcams "Sutherland Santo di Patria" and listen to it. Dimitrova is great. But Sutherland totally KILLS this aria.
I believe Sutherland's recording of this aria is the greatest epic recording of ANY aria in the history of the recording studio.
Goodness, the power of the THREE high E's in full voice is enough to listen to it.

Sutherland's top notes were always unbeatable, but her bottom was far from outstanding, even at a young age.
Pablo Lana was not outstanding but it was good and supported
+diana ventura high Es and Fs does not save the whole performance with a lyric voice with no reliable low and middle. Dramatic voices have a lower tessitura and light voices have a higher and that explain why soubrette voices like Mado Robins have an easy C7 while heavy dramatic voices like Flagstad struggle with notes higher than C6 (Callas is exception)

is this really about who can hit the high notes because verdi clearly did not write those in and was not thinking about high notes hence he did not write them. He always stated that he did not want his music to be pure pyrotechnics. While I actually enjoy listeneing to the perfection in sutherland this is much more substantial.

@raigekimaru If you simply wished that Dimitrova put more elegant moments, I would understand. But elegant throughout? No. Verdi has lots of elegant moments, but not all the time. If a Fra Melitone or a Falstaff remains elegant all the time, he will not be very good. Can an Abigaille be elegant all the time? Yes, but she will miss the point. If Verdi's wife had sung the role elegantly, she would have had a long career. Odabella is planning a revenge. How can she be elegant all the time?
