The great Bruson now 88 & I wonder if he is at all doing any coaching or teaching younger singers. If not then listening & absorbing this master singer‘s musicianship, superior phrasing, & stylistic expertise will have to suffice. The wonderful timbre of his instrument eschews extensive & thunderous high notes which he, himself, figured out early on were not for him either by the nature of his voice or interpretive design. He therefore sings, for the most part, the notes only as written by the composer & I can imagine that Verdi would have regarded his work highly. His lyric approach to repertoire also makes his singing of aria antique absolutely a lesson in itself. I have a CD of his performing these type of pieces & cherish it especially.

I was there! That is, at a later performance. This one was the official gala for the reopening of Teatro Muninicipal, that had been closed for restoration. The president of Brazil, Ernest Geisel, was there. It was for guests only, but there were several public performances in the following days and I was at one of them. This Turandot was very carefully and professionally organized by two argentinian guys, I forgot their names. The ets and the mise en scène were of good visual quality. Note that Neeme Yarvi, than unknonwn, conducts. I remember everybody was in disbelief wirh Dimitrova's voice and performance. The enigma scene is absolutely incredible. Thanks for posting this.

I know that Giacomini is a splendid Don Alvaro, right voice for this difficult role. I also know that Гена Димитрова is a great soprano and still she's the one who surprised me the most. Her Leonora is memorable!

Score another bulls-eye for Bruson here. A superb Verdi Baritone stylist, perhaps the greatest of his time. Others like Manuguerra, Cappuccilli, & Zancanaro, of the Italian breed, had more flamboyant instruments but Bruson‘s basic timbre, for me, is memorable. He has so much more artistry to offer besides a huge upper extension to his range. Verdi would, I believe, have been an admirer.

Trovo assurdo che in un teatro importante come il "San Carlo" di Napoli non avessero previsto un sostituto di Nicola Martinucci, autore di una prova davvero penosa.

19 years since her passing today. RIP.

Manuguerra perhaps one of the 3 greatest Verdi baritones during the final quarter of the 20th Century. He & the conductor Veltri also collaborated memorably in Seattle in 1973 in RIGOLETTO. Although Manuguerra started his career pretty late he kept his instrument in admirable shape up until he died of a heart attack in his early 70s.

Sapevo della grandezza di questi due fenomeni, ma qui si superano entrano nell'impossibile. Questo duetto viene spesso tagliato per la terribile tessitura e questa performance è una rarità di bellezza assoluta alla faccia di chi fa le pulci e critica paragonando il tutto alla famosa bevanda americana. BONISOLLI istrionico, mattatore assoluto quando era sul palco era sempre mattatore non era secondo a nessuno, certo a qualcuno può non piacere ma sono gusti personali. La sua incredibile carriera lo celebra tra i grandi. Chapeau ad entrambi per la stupenda performance.
