  • ROUNDABOUTS - One of the main reasons why people fail a driving test in the UK. It doesn’t matter if the DVSA test is in a Car, HGV / Lorry or PCV / Bus, the driving rules are all the same!
    What are the rules for roundabouts in the UK?
    What lane do I need to be in at a roundabout?
    What is the clock face when using roundabouts?
    Is a mini roundabout different to a normal roundabout?
    These are some of the frequently asked questions by learner drivers when trying to understand how roundabouts work in the UK. First answer to a FAQ of ‘Why do we need roundabouts?’ is quite simply, we have roundabouts when a number of roads meet in order to keep traffic flowing and ease congestion. They are a more efficient option than a traffic light junction for example.
    Have you ever worried that you don’t know how roundabouts actually work? Do you suffer hesitation at roundabouts? In this video we will explain roundabout rules on where to position yourself on approach with the right lane selection, how to read a road sign, the appropriate signal to give and most importantly to reinforce a key rule from the highway code…give way to traffic on the right!
    You may of failed a driving test on a roundabout or you don’t quite understand what your driving instructor means when talking about the ‘clock face’ when choosing your exit. This video should give you the A-Z to leave serious driver faults in the rear view mirror and have confidence to pass your test and happily take on a roundabout wherever you are in the UK!
    1. General rules of the roundabout and introduction - 0:34 - 2:11
    2. Different types of roundabout - 2:12 - 2:25
    3. How to approach a roundabout - 2:26 - 6:01
    4. Observation on approach / Hesitation - 6:02 - 9:25
    5. Do I need to straddle / split lanes for a roundabout - 9:26 - 13:13
    6. Lane discipline on approach - 13:14 - 16:18
    7. When to indicate for a roundabout? - 16:19 - 18:03
    8. Mini roundabouts - 18:04 - 20:26
    9. Can I pull a U-turn on a mini roundabout? - 20:27 - 20:58
    10. What do the road signs mean at a roundabout? - 20:59 - 23:35
    11. The ‘Clock face’ of a roundabout - 23:36 - 25:44

    It’s a very helpful video tutorial on driving a heavy vehicle on roundabouts. There are itsybitsy things covered which can help new drivers from making fatal mistakes on the road. I really liked what is explained about straggling the lanes on a narrow approach road, which in fact was one of my major queries and also the fact that on a roundabout big enough, approached by lanes wide enough, we have to keep inside our lane as a truck driver. Thank you very much for this very informative video tut.👍🏼🙏🏼

    Another good video. Would an examiner take exception to you confirming where he'd asked you to go by repeating it? Also, if you find yourself in the wrong lane, I take it best practice would be to stay there - even if it means going in the wrong direction (?)

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před 11 měsíci

      A simple confirmation to confirm you've heard him he's fine I probably wouldn't be repeating the order back verbally, however definitely repeating it back in your head to help build your plan for the roundabout. Yes, if you find yourself in the wrong lane then definitely be prepared to go the wrong way to try and fix a mistake can be extremely more dangerous than just going the wrong way. Thank you so much for your comment and your questions. I hope this helps. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍👍

    Hi guys, I've watched loads of your videos and the reason i came back to this is cos i failed twice now on the same thing, i failed Thursday and just now 😢 what i failed with was, i used a bus as a blocker and a car to my right on the roundabout switched lanes to come around the back of the bus and i had to brake hard to stop and Thursday a car came shooting out at a different roundabout so by time i pulled off the car was on me so i had to brake hard to stop again, rest of the driving was great and i was so proud of it all apart from pulling out in time at roundabouts. Absolutely gutted, any other tips although this video is amazing. Thanks for all the effort you put in. Also ive been taught at mini roundabouts to only signal as i come off it and not to signal when i come on to it, is this wrong because in this video i noticed you said the opposite. Also ive been taught if there is no road marking coming upto a roundabout then i can take the middle of the road but if there are marked lanes i have to stay in the lane. Thanks again

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před 19 dny +1

      So sorry to hear about that Jake. These roundabouts can be a bit tricky. It can always be a little bit challenging using a large vehicle like a bus as a blocker, because your observation is reduced heavily, (By the Bus) and the chances of a small car or motorcycle creeping round can be quite high. This is especially the case when we test in Croydon south London. If vision on approach to the roundabout is reduced for example buildings or trees then reduce the speed on approach, so the observation can be a lot higher for that speeding car. With regards to mini roundabouts, absolutely not, imagine how you would feel if that vehicle turning left or right didn't indicate on approach, it would be extremely frustrating. Therefore indication on approach is absolutely necessary however, with the mini roundabout indication to leave is not.
      With regards to paint on the ground, read the highway code. This states if there is no paint on the ground, then left lane for left turn, left lane for straight on. right lane for a right turn. Obviously if it's tight then, of course you would struggle on approach, this is where you're going to use your Position, Speed and Look technique. If there is paint on the ground, giving you a designated lane then this is the lane you should be in. However again if it's tight, then a struggle may be required, depending on the category of vehicle you're driving. Hope this helps if you've got any problems or questions, please give us a call.
      Kind Regards Paul

    I get this but my examiner on really busy roundabouts put me on a minor for undue hesitation for not going but I always felt on very busy roundabouts of unpredictable vehicles vs a slow class 2 lorry

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před rokem +1

      This can be very true, but this is where you're using your experience. When you say unpredictable vehicles you're thinking of the clues that we look for to tell us where they may go. Remember you're not new at driving. You're just new driving this category so using your experience and looking for the clues to tell you where they may go as for the slow class two lorries, there are many times when they may try and help you, or we can use the slow speed as an advantage.
      We are not saying this is easy and it takes practice and an understanding of the vehicle that you're driving, for example, how to position it and how fast it will pull away. Hope this helps. Thank you so much for your comment and input. 👍👍👍👍

      I'm so sorry, JC I'm just a little bit confused here. The main thing to remember when navigating a roundabout is the size of your vehicle. If you remember what dictates the lane position, is it the white line or is it the kerb, obviously the kerb is going to be more important, so on approach if you do need to straddle, then absolutely take that defensive positioning.
      Let's put that aside and now imagine the roundabout it's very large, if there is no paint on the ground and you are turning left at the roundabout then you will require Lane one on approach. If you're following the road ahead second exit, you will still require Lane one on the approach if you're turning right on the roundabout, let's imagine third exit you will require the right hand lane.
      If there is paint on the ground, then this becomes different, and if you've got two lanes, turning right, then you will require the left-hand lane of the choice. I hope this helps, and if you've got any questions or problems, please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍

      Pretty sure left lane ends up being 1st 2nd 3rd exit
      Right lane ends up being 3rd & 4th exit
      Unless it’s a BMW driver

  • @christophermcadam4264

    Failed my test the other day in HGV for not going straight over a mini roundabout when I was taught you have to try going around as much as possible not just drive straight over, now I’m worried for my next test what do I do? Go straight over or try to go around as much as I can without mounting a curb etc my instructor even said I was right to try going around

      The best thing to do is trust the highway code, which states make an attempt where possible. There is no point trying to make things extremely difficult for yourself. There is a really good reason why it's a blob of paint. Best of luck for the next one. 🤞🤞👍👍👍

    Say for example if I take the overtaking lane to turn right a turn right end up on the overtaking lane then move back to the left lane would that be a serious fault in driving test

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před rokem

      This would all depend on the size of the roundabout and who is around you and what they do because of what you've done. For example, if there is no one around you when this happens in this could remain as a minor fault. However, when there are other road users around you, this has the potential to put them in danger as well.
      Also the size of the vehicle, for example, category, C,C1, D or D1 could be okay, however the C+E would give you far too many blind spots making it very difficult to see anyone around you and you are putting them in danger.
      We hope this helps, if you have any questions please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul.👍👍

    19:06 I should have thought why you do not indicate left on exiting a mini-roundabout when turning right is nothing to do with being busy. Surely it is because all drivers know which way you are going from the beginning and if you did signal on exit there is no time for other drivers to react to your signal. They already know your course anyway.

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před rokem

      Unfortunate not Keith, when negotiating a mini roundabout if we were to indicate as we mentioned in the video, the back of the the vehicle may not have entered the roundabout yet, and therefore indicating left at this stage could be misleading for people behind you or approaching the roundabout. As we know from the highway code, an indication indicates intention of direction, it does not always mean that the driver is going to follow through with what they're going to do .
      Rule 103
      Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians of your intended actions.
      You should always give clear signals in plenty of time, having checked it is NOT MISLEADING to signal at that time
      use them to ADVISE other road users before changing course or direction, stopping or moving off
      cancel them after use
      make sure your signals WILL NOT CONFUSE OTHERS. Remember that signalling does not give you priority.
      We hope this clears up any confusion. Thank you so much for your input. 👍👍

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 Před rokem

      @@NationalDrivingCentre But drivers already know which way you intend to turn with the initial indication, You are now not signalling because the back of the vehicle has not entered the roundabout? Drivers of any vehicle exiting a mini-roundabout subsequent to turning right are advised not to signal left. This already gives the instruction of what to do not signal on exit. If what you say were true you would have to consider size of min-roundabout and whether you had a short vehicle such as a loose artic tractor then indicate under certain specific circumstances which would be nonsense. Similarly you would be signalling left when driving your car as they are universally short.

      Thanks everyone keep up the good work 👌

    • @NationalDrivingCentre
      @NationalDrivingCentre  Před rokem

      @@shaynewalsh1950 if there's no paint on the ground, then the left lane can be for left, turns and follow the road ahead, however if there is paint on the ground telling you the left lane is left turn only then obviously alternative lane to go straight on would be required. In the same way, if there is no paint on the ground, the right lane is a right turn only and again, if there's paint on the ground, giving you multiple lanes are turning right down, the left lane of the choice would be required. Obviously, the reason behind this would be, in the right hand lane, knowing that there is a vehicle on a blind side (the left side) doing the same manoeuvre. I hope this helps and clears up any questions. If you've got any points, please give us a call. Kind Regards Paul 👍👍👍👍👍
