Snakes of the Czech Republic, full nature documentary, wild reptiles of Europe

  • Czech Republic is a small country in Europe, in which people were changing the landscape for centuries. An untouched wilderness has already disappeared from most regions. Despite of that, many secretive wild animals survive in the cultural landscape without being noticed by humans. Snakes often inhabit abandoned areas very close to people. There are only 5 species (European adder, Aesculapian snake, Dice snake, Smooth snake, Grass snake) in the Czech Republic and yet they are an interesting part of the local fauna. What kind of life they live? Are there any areas in the country where they thrive? How are snakes influenced by human activities? And most importantly, do we need to fear them? Let's reveal the secrets of our snake neighbors and go through the experience of one year in their life from early spring to late autumn.
We worked on this film for 6 years and this project basically started the existence of Living Zoology film studio.

By watching these educational videos my fear level has decreased by 75%. I have a great love for all living things, and this has shown me that snakes are not aggressive, unless provoked. Really awesome documentary! I live in the United States and we have many more species of snakes here. I actually love snakes and have several pet snakes myself. The majority of my snakes are captive bred. Lots of people in the United States love snakes but unfortunately lots of people hate them too. I often travel to the Czech Republic for work. I've been to Brno, Prague, Ostrava, and a few other places there. I'm a roadie for bands, so travel almost constantly. But sadly I mostly only see the cities and populated areas and never get to see the countryside and wildlife of the countries I visit.
It's funny, though, because in the last few years the counties of Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Slovakia have become the favorite countries for bands and roadies. Those countries are safe, clean, the people are great, and the economy in those areas has really taken off.

@tomprice1671 @LivingZoology The drone footage of the dice snakes reminded me myself about 25 yrs ago while fishing as kid/teenager in river Jihlava, wading in 30 cm deep, and found 1 dice snake just next to my right foot, and then found another one laying there between small stones right between my feet. I knew they're not dangerous/poisonous, but still remember that freeze on my neck and back xD
Don't worry, I didn't hurt them, only moved myself a bit to find another fishing spot :D Was mid of nice sunny summertime ^^
Thanks to this beautiful film I also finally found why small fish always were paralyzed in mouths of these small snakes. I remember I "stole" catch (18 cm fish) of another dice snake who might be like 90cm - 1m long, and when the snake let his catch loose in the water after I found them, the fish was paralyzed and I was able to catch it in my hand so easily. Never knew the fish was poisoned by the snake's neurotoxin, or that our snakes (except adder) are any poisonous at all. Nvm, I used the 18cm fish as bait for my fishing, poor snake ^^.
I think these species did well in time of my childhood in all river Jihlava "under" the Mohelno Dam. As child/teenager I met many dice snakes right close to the dam, or several km further down the river in Templštýn location (Castle ruins - beautiful tourist location), where I also found many green lizards (lacerta viridis), or another bunch of kilometers down the river in Ivančice, Dolní Kounice etc... I hope the snakes and lizards still do well or even better after those 20 - 25 years...

Thank you for watching our documentary and huge thank you for becoming our new member! We really appreciate that. November is already too late for snakes in the Czech Republic unfortunately :/ Only very rarely if the weather stays surprisingly calm some snakes can be randomly out. There is a population of Dice snakes near the Prague Zoo close to the river but in November they will be probably already hibernating. The Natural History Museum in Prague might be interesting, then the cultural classics - Charles bridge, Prague castle, Prague Astronomical Clock...Try some traditional Czech restaurants, there are many! We live in Brno, which is the second biggest city in the Czech Republic, so we are not experts on Prague. If you ever come to the Czech Republic again, let us know! Once again fantastic. Strange gestion for using military vehicles for refitting the ponds! But we have some interesting comparison for belgium in the south of country one of the most rich area for orchidea is actually a military area where big vehicles drive on.

What is your experience in Vipera berus melanism occurance accordng on sex dependence?
I've red that its MUCH more occuring in females, to the point that in twenty or even more melanistic individuals youll find only one male?
And what subspicies is present in Chech republic? Is it the nominant berus berus or our balkan subspicies, berus bosniensis?
