This Cocktail Doesn't Look Like It Works On Paper

  • The Blinker is a super simple three ingredient sipper with a really cute name. The other interesting thing about this drink is that when you look at the ingredients on paper they look like they won't work at all and then you try it, and the lights of heaven open up upon you and you just can't figure out how you could have possibly been so wrong but, you were and you're glad you were because it is a FANTASTIC DRINK!
    The first version of this drink (as far as we can tell) was published by Patrick Gavin Duffy in his 1934 tome The Official Mixers Manual and it subsequently made an appearance in David A. Embry's The Fine Art Of Mixing Drinks published in 1948.

    Bourbon/Rye goes very well with grapefruit. One of my favs is the "Brown Derby cocktail"

    I cannot stop making this cocktail! I’m using the new Elijah Craig Rye Whiskey at 94 proof and it’s fantastic! I tried it first up in the coupe glass per the video. Now I mix it on the rocks in a glass and add in a Luxardo cherry with a little bit of the cherry syrup. I never would have thought to use grapefruit juice in any bourbon/rye cocktail but it is a perfect companion. Thank you!

    I made this cocktail recently because I had a lot of grapefruits on hand. I also made it a couple of months ago when I had a lot of grapefruit. The second time, I used a craft grenadine (marked on the bottle as "batch 0028") instead of Monin, and it was a lot better. So this seems to be a drink where the quality of the grenadine makes a big difference. (I guess I'll have to test that theory by making a Jack Rose one of these days.)

  • @alextheis1123
    @alextheis1123 Před 4 lety

    Sir - I want to issue a challenge on your shaker technique, specifically how they need to be put together. I agree your slamming together works, but I disagree in that it's NOT necessary. By sliding together, holding together firmly, and starting a slow shake, the ice/cold creates a seal quickly. After 3-5 slow shakes the seal forms and vigorous shaking can commence. Of course, this only works when shaking with ice. I'd love to see you try both techniques on a Monday happy hour live!!! (Love your videos btw - thanks!)
