Brazilian here, Branco was injured and didn't make into the group stage matches, Leonardo was then improvised as a left Wing-back/left midfielder, Roberto Carlos was already playing really well at Palmeiras and the Brazilian press pressured Parreira because he did not call Roberto Carlos, Parreira was only calling players with international experience! After Leonardo red card against USA, Branco had to start this match without his best fitness condition and the rest is History!
Leonardo started his career as a left wing at Flamengo where at the age of 17, in 1987 he was Brazilian champion with Zico, Bebeto, Leonardo was a left-back in the 94th Cup no midfielder

Romario was simply fabulous in this World Cup, he had one helluva tournament. It was heartbreaking how he was unable to make the squad due to injury the following tournament. I think he would have made a difference for Brazil.
That wasn't it. The leaders didn't like Romário because he was a bit rebellious, he liked to go out at night to parties and didn't want to train. He was only summoned to this cup because the Brazilian people and the entire press pressured the leaders to take him. But they almost didn't take him

Pra mim a copa do mundo mais marcante. Nunca vou esquecer cada um dos jogos, depois da tristeza de 90 e já 24 anos sem títulos, 1994 marcou demais a minha geração.
Não era um time só de de craques mas era um time muito aguerrido que honrou demais a camisa do Brasil.

I miss my time, the 1987 Brazilian champion Flamengo that half of this team were holders of the Flamengo team, Aldair, Jorginho, Leonardo, Zinho and Bebeto, still had Zico and others from the team.

Brazil used to play with 3 backward midfield - dunga, Mauro Silva e Mazinho - and 1 foward midfield which was Zinho. If Leornado had not taken a red card, probably he would be a foward midfield like Zinho, thus with Branco would get back to left side. What a team!
