The best part this channel is watching how much you two have grown. Your ability to notice and analyse the subtle intricacies shows how your ears have developed, and it's mirrored in your more advanced use of terminology. You've truly become fans of so much new (for you) music and knowing artists names you didn't know existed just a year ago are now part of your music vocabulary. It's beautiful.

Larry Knechtel played the lead guitar parts in the song. Frontman David Gates said, "James (Griffin) went out and tried to play a solo that wasn't sounding right, and I went out and tried it and didn't have any luck either. Larry plays a little guitar, so I asked him to try it. He hooked up a little wah-wah pedal, and came up with all those things on the spot. I bet that wasn't more than two hours of work on his part."

I have always loved this song and how it reflects the desire a guitar player has to just play,no matter how small the audience or how old the player gets. I meet with a group of players every week and stay amazed at how good some of these guys are who are now 70 to 90 years old. I work hard to be an average rhythm player but these guys I play with can still throw down the lead licks on guitars, mandolins, banjo or anything with strings. This song tells their story. ❤

I so clearly remember my dads car when I was a little kid he had The Sound of Bread on cassette and he basically never took it out so I know those songs note for note. The end of this song when the guitar man character begins to lose his magic and fades away used to make me cry …. I was such a sensitive kid 😂

What is amazing about this song is how stark he paints being a star. He implies The stereotype of a crazy life by always seeking the next show. It paints a lonely picture but the main character has no choice; its like a curse and a blessing. His mellow voice never breaks, even as he's describing a guitar show (there's even a sample of a crowd at the end.) So its like he's sitting there thinking this stuff almost trying to convince himself to keep going. But he knows how much he affects peoples lives and that feedback loop goes on forever. Being the guitar man is a double edged sword. this song perfectly expresses both sides at the same time

Yep, Larry's name should be better known than it is. I heard a long interview with him on BBC radio decades ago, and IIRC he was supposed to play bass on this song, but they did a number of takes and the band's guitarist was struggling to find lines that expressed what they were trying to achieve, so they tried it again with the lead guitarist playing support, Larry playing lead and David Gates (!) playing bass. However true all of that is, they nailed it. I wasn't really a soft rock kind of guy back then, but I still thought this one of the best singles of the decade.
