On the group hikes that I help lead for Make-A-Wish, all of the hike leaders have Motorola Talkabout radios (I don't recall the model). I like the IP67 rating on these Retevis radios - cool!

I have a bag with some baofeng 888s that I pass out to Jeep friends. All 16 channels are on the same gmrs frequency so they can’t be messed up.

I've got two pair of FRS radios. A Uniden and a Motorola. Used them for family vacations at amusement parks and when the kids got older they took them while riding their bikes in the neighborhood. They could play and we were still able to talk with them without giving them one of our cell phones. I should dig them out and use them. They could be useful as there's little to no cell service in most of the White Mountains National Forest and my buddy and I will often split up and do our own thing for a few hours at a time on our overnights in the Whites. Thankfully those radios take regular or rechargeable AA's as I expect the batteries will need to be replaced.

I'd like to see you test the radios in the same terrain as your original scenario with your family to see how they work. I've tried using frs radios in the past with no luck at all in the mountains at less than a half a mile between me and the other person. Usually these kinds of handhelds transmit far below the legal limit, but if these Retevis radios are closer to the limit, maybe they will work well.

My first test was actually in the snow footage with a couple guys who were about 1/8th mile away through trees and around corners and they worked fine. But yeah going back to the canyon would be interesting!
