What I don't understand is why Netflix decided to put Nona's name in the show, while every other character is fictional. I mean, how hard could it be to invent a different female chess player like they invented all the male ones?
This is vvv true
They do mention Morphy and Cabablanca as well, comparisons to actual chess history can be cool for those who know about it. Really what i don't get is why they needed the "she never played men" line so much. It would have been the exact same thing without it. Its inclusion is baffling to me.
Yeah but they listed alot of players from the past to somewhat just name drop and make the show feel grounded in chess culture but they never claimed that was real as this whole story is fiction they also mentioned stuff about Morphy, Bronstein, Alekhine, etc that may not have been accurate but was only used to serve the plot.

It's disheartening to see so many people interpreting this lawsuit as a scheme for her to get some quick money. Had they paid more attention to the articles, they would see that prior to filing the lawsuit, Nona's legal team had contacted Netflix asking them to remove/alter the line or, at the very least, issue an apology; those requests were dismissed by the company, stating they did nothing wrong and would take no action to try and correct it; only after that was the lawsuit filed, asking for enough money for the word to be spread around.
I, personally, see this lawsuit as a last resort for Ms. Gaprindashvili to stand up for her legacy that "The Queen's Gambit" diminished in front of 62 million households just so it could make a fictional character seem more accomplished.
Diminished HOW? By making her name MORE common? By making her MORE famous? Yeah, fuckin' woe is her.
@@christianfaux736 i mean the tone, the everything, the fact that shes "never faced men" when she faced 60 of them at the time when it happened... again as the whole queens gambit was supposed to highlight, it wasnt and still isnt easy for women in the chess world, this is just straight up minimizing her achievments.
@@christianfaux736 I feel like you're focusing too much on external factors such as money/fame, all the while neglecting the fact that, generally, chess players, much like athletes, tend to be highly intrinsically motivated. A personal sense of achievement, honor, and pride are all a big part of what makes a true pioneer in any sport; intrinsic motivation is also what keeps the 80-year-old woman competing in (and winning) senior world championships. Beautiful pivot to Nona’s career.
I appreciate the story telling and history. Great job, great content.
I'm still of the opinion that Netflix will settle. Not for millions, a few thousand probably.
I'm also of the opinion that 'winning' wasnt the point of the lawsuit. I feel like the point of the lawsuit was just to put out there her stance, and get it noticed. If Gaprindashvili's PR people put out a statement, it probably gets no attention outside of Georgia. Make it a lawsuit for millions of dollars... suddenly it's got eyeballs. Eyeballs that are reading it, and acknowledging the truth of Gaprindashvili's history.
Did it work? GothamChess made a video about it.... you decide.
Yeah I agree with you on that one.
Edit: and also, I think the lawsuit is valid and I’m glad it’s getting attention. Netflix shouldn’t be able to belittle someone like that.

Wow, Jack Peters is a professor at my school! I never expected to see him in a Gotham video
I played Gaprindashvili in a simultaneous exhibition in 1977. But on that occasion she was in a pretty sour mood, and her personality did not impress me. She did win the game against me, but infuriated by her failure to win all of the games, she would not sign autographs or talk to anyone, until her husband prevailed upon her to at least sign autographs. She struck me as being overly sensitive about her reputation. The fact that nobody, not even Levy, remembers the line indicates to me (also not a lawyer) that she will have a hard time showing actual damage to her reputation in court.
And as I recall, Jack Peters actually had 3 GM norms, but there was too much time between them, so FIDE declined to grant the GM title. He was a strong IM. At one point we looked so much alike that several people in tournaments mistook me for him. Of course, they never mistook him for me, since nobody really cared who I was :)
thank you for sharing your story, that's interesting
Levy did not say he didn't *remember* the line. What he said was that he didn't notice the line as being out of place. That actually SUPPORTS the claim that it damaged her reputation because it so thoroughly convinced people that her achievements never happened and didn't cause anyone to question the veracity.
This is a pretty standard defamation case, to be honest, and I genuinely baffled by how many people are opposing this. Netflix literally straight up lied about her achievements.
Hey Levy, Love your videos, earnt a lot from them
I actually remember watching that line in the show and being curious if it was based on a real person and what her story was. Never did I assume that it straight up *was * a real person, mentioned by name and that it was belittling her real accomplishments. The scary thing is, in such a well researched show I just assumed that what they said was based in truth and women weren’t playing men in that time period.

In the case of a multi-billion dollar company throwing shade at a real player in a show full of fake players, then replying "yeah, that's tough. We ain't changing it." Hello, five million dollar lawsuit.
And most ironic is that in a moment when they tried to show how man are bad in disrespect to female players, shown that disrespect to a real female player themself in the first place...
Netflix threw a real life legend under the bus to make their own fake character look good. Well done Levy for making this video.
The 1960's was a very different time, Nona Gaprindashvili's achievements might not be as grand as the queen's gambit story line but the fact she did what she did in that era is amazing, and belittling it in the show to just give credence to a fake character is not cool.

Thank you for this video. You really drilled down on one of the most important points here: almost everyone would have believed this line and would have assumed that women didn’t play men at all in this era if it weren’t for this lawsuit. I love the Queen’s Gambit and I hope that Netflix finds a way to make this right.
Funny how you read that. Fact is, it was an obscure line in a movie about Beth. I didn't notice, Levy even didn't; and had she not herself put this under a magnifying glass, likely no one ever would have noticed.
Simple matter is, she has, in the public's eye, faded into history. And her name is too difficult to remember. Seriously, had they mentioned Judith Polgar, pretty much the entire chess world would have been in an uprise, including me.
@@gladosadoree
Wow, in just 2 paragraphs you revealed that you don't give a shit about the Queen's Gambit, nor do you give a shit about chess, while pretending to care about both.
1) It was not some throwaway line, it was literally the justification for why the events of that episode were so groundbreaking
2) It was a show, not movie
3) She hasn't faded into history - at least not chess history. She was literally the FIRST female grandmaster. She will forever be remembered for that accomplishment, something nobody else will ever get to claim
4) Her name is not that complicated. It's Nona. In terms of chess player names, that's pretty basic all things considered. This is the same game that has person named Viswanathan as a household name everyone knows.
5) You didn't even get Judit Polgar's name correct
Seriously, if you wanted to PRETEND to care, the least you could have done was look this up. At least then your lie would have been believable.
@@Ruminations09 1) And yet nearly everyone missed it. Because Queen's Gambit, as a whole, was meant to elevate her (at the expense of others), and is clearly a fictional work (with the usual vague historical references to elicit a suspension of disbelief.) She is herself an amalgamation of Bobby Fischer, a bit of Vasyl Ivanchuk (the staring at the ceiling), and likely several others. Nobody is really looking for inaccuracies in these things, as everyone already knows it isn't based on reality.
2) Really? It was a show? Should I now point out it wasn't a show, but a mini-series?
3) And yes, she has faded into history. And, ironically, even the post we replied to said so literally: "You really drilled down on one of the most important points here: almost everyone would have believed this line and would have assumed that women didn’t play men at all in this era if it weren’t for this lawsuit." Exactly. 'almost everyone' did not know anything about her. And that's the problem with your reply. You not only make it personal, you take it personal too. And I get why ppl might be upset: she meant a lot for women's chess; but that doesn't detract one iota from the cold reality that even to the vast majority of the chess world, that line went by without notice.
4) This is your retort, that Nona isn't a difficult name? What a disingenuous remark. Why, again, much to your chagrin, perhaps, Gaprindashvili really IS a difficult name to remember. Speaking on Ivanchuk, take his middle name, Mykhaylovych. That's easy, because it just sounds like Michael with the typical east-european '-witsch' attached to it. Gaprindashvili, however, shares no common Western reference. And no, Viswanathan isn't a household name either. People tend to call him Vishy. Like Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who is generally referred to as just Praga. And I bet the same majority of the chess world has no idea how to spell their names properly either (let alone are able to pronounce them properly).
5) You got me on the Judit spelling. But it makes litte difference: both 'Judit(h)' and 'Polgar' are easy names to pronounce for Western people, whereas Gaprindashvili really is not.
Also, what 'lie' exactly are you referring to? Or did you just put that in for effect?

So i would love to see them get to pay for this now and then.
Also, if this can help this amazing woman in getting some extra credits for her chess, i like that too. :)
I am not sure about this, but probably at the time this happen, her country was probably occupied/controlled by Soviet, and then it is easy to see that it is a very big deal for her to not be named as a Russian.
For example, a French person who lived in France when Germany occupied France would of course not be happy to be named as German later.
I am also glad you make a positive video about her. :)
All the movies/serials Americans have made about Vikings and Romans have made me so frustrated because there is so much twisted history and direct lies in them. Even if they are entertaining, they still try to make it look like facts also, even if it seldom is more then a few names that is correct, and the rest is so twisted that it hurt for those that know the facts.
How would Americans like it if a lot of European movies was made that tried to look like they was half historical movies, and then they said things like Abraham Lincoln fought to keep the slavery and things like that?

I loved this video dedicated to Nona Gaprindasvili. I studied her games back in the 1970s. In the game you analyzed with the Grand Prix attack, you make several good points about playing against black's light square bishop with pawns and blockading knights. However, there is one point you were trying to make for effect that doesn't pan out in the variation you described. 22:42 "I hope they find a way to rectify the situation..." - they don't need to because of 22:53. This "situation" indeed introduced us to 1st woman grandmaster, perhaps all this was even planned... and indeed go Nona!
i hope she wins they shouldnt slander her name and legacy like that. it's not promoting women in chess (fictionally in this case with beth harmon) if you have to lie and put down other women's achivements
I hope she loses :D
@@relaxx2654 then leave a comment on the main video. idc what your opinion is you can think that if you like, just dunno why you replied to me about it lmaooo
debatable though i think most would disagree with you mate
Yeah but why 5 millions??
5 million is too much
you just know that it's gonna be a positional battle when two sovjet masters clash
2:40 They blundered out of the complaint, but hopefully they can stabilize during discovery.
I appreciate this take on the lawsuit so much more than Hikaru's take of basically telling her to go kick rocks and quit being such a pansy. Good on you for giving her the credit she deserves
Very true!
She deserves credit, but not in a fictional show mentioning a public figure. Just silly. The charges will never stick. If you go into a fictional show expecting sheer facts, you’re a moron. Let’s all sue the producers of Hamilton, because most of that story is just that… a story. They embellished for the sake of entertainment. A ton of what happens is actually fictional and yes, it’s based on real people
Dude imagine the tantrum Hikaru would throw if he was misrepresented
@@douwehuysmans5959 He wouldnt care.
@@douwehuysmans5959 he already has been... multiple times
She has every right to be offended and demand that Netflix redress this and apologize publicly, which is why I’m glad she sued as it got this story out into the public eye, and I suspect that is why her lawyers brought this suit. However, it’s basically unwinnable as she’d have to demonstrate actual malice over what was essentially a throwaway line noone gave a second thought to, which is why both everyone at Netflix and everyone viewing missed it for a year.
Only need actual malice for public figures. I'm not sure she qualifies as a public figure, so it wouldn't need to be malice.
@@modernoto10 it need to be malice in any case
@@youdontknowme5980 In Florida, where I practice law, that is not the case. Malice is only necessary if the plaintiff is a public figure, such as a politician. Private citizens need only show negligence. I can't speak for other jurisdictions.
@@modernoto10 oh pretty interesting, i am from other country so i was not sure about the USA
@@modernoto10 I’m not a lawyer so I’m willing to defer, but I find myself sceptical that she doesn’t qualify as a public figure.
Most likely outcome is a settlement for an undisclosed sum and Netflix re-dubs the line from that scene to acknowledge her. The way the shot is composed they don't really need to re-shoot anything since the speaker is not in frame. As to whether that's a fair outcome...
Netflix is an easy target in this woke culture
wow wow wow, that's escalated quickly
Does that mean, if a writer uses Nona Gaprindashvili in fiction, that character should be a perfect match to the actual chess player?
You better make sure you get everything right or I'll be there to fork $5M from you!
No but it shouldn’t be humiliating
Y'all, relax about the 5 million dollars. She's 80 and doesn't need the 5 million. She'll most likely get a small settlement out of court and donate it to some random local chess club. This is more for publicity for women's chess than anything, and I'm all for it. Go Nona!
She is bare greedy tho
I hope she doesnt win it seems very to say its ruining its her professional career but since she is 80 she is gonna die soon so no one cares also why is there a female chess movement. Either ur good at chess or ur not it doesnt depend on her gender
Lawsuit is filed by a Beverly Hills firm. They don't fight for peanuts.
You inspired me levy more then queens gambit.🙂✌
Rafael Leitão (Brazilian GM) had spoken about this months ago
Damn she’s so good that she played someone a year before they were born
I do question how much a show, concerning a fictional character, even though it references real people, can be held to 'defamation' accusations....
The story is fictional... though inspired from some real world people... but still fictional. If people start suing over their person being used factually wrong in a work of fiction, there are a LOT of movies, tv shows, books, and even artists that are going to be in trouble...
As much as I understand she was offended by the claim in the show, this feels like if Richard Nixon was still alive and sued the studio over his portrayal in The Watchmen.
1) It's a work of fiction and is taking artistic license with the material because it needed Harmon to be 'breaking new ground' so they wrote it that way to serve the characters arc.
2) It's a period piece, set in a very sexist time period, and the intent may have been just to portray male commentators not giving a female champion her proper credit.
There also aren't any damages since she didn't lose any money over this. Normally winning a 5 million dollar lawsuit would mean that the defamation severely impacted your life in some way. She'd have to have lost sponsorships or had her good name dragged through the mud because of this in order to win the lawsuit, neither of which really happened.
So, if I got this right, I make the movie to be fictional, and now I can make fools of all the people on the planet, without their permission. Portray Bill Gates as a gay for example or Elon Musk with small pnis. I can do even worse , more serious stuff
@@milannesic5718 Tons have movies, over the last fifty years, have portrayed certain people of note in an imperfect light, some just downright false... but there is a difference when the work is intended as fiction, or trying to pass itself off as biographical. I'm sure some people have sued and won, but I'm guessing that most did not, and others may not have even cared.
@@milannesic5718 Yes you can. See South Park, SNL, etc.
Well yeah. By the lawsuit’s logic, that means the entire alternate history genre is defamatory and everything in it is going to get sued… even though it’s a hypothetical, fictional variation of real history.
The joke is if this show actually let its audience know it was fictional. If it didn’t then Netflix fucked up big time
8:12 as opposed to retreats forward?
I have not seen queens gambit though
