The story of a girl who learns she has a natural talent for Chess who becomes a woman determined to be the best in the world. Here's my review for Netflix's THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT! #TheQueensGambit #Netflix

I also liked that they didn't include Jolene sexually abusing her like in the book. Jolene molested her in the orphanage when she was a teenager and Beth was 8 and the book just never mentioned it again and they were still best friends in the end. Without that, their friendship was more believable in the show.

To be fair, they did had great female protagonist : Moana, Frozen, Inside out all depicted strong and flawed female character. True, they did also dropped the ball hard, especially with REY, wich never failed or even ecounter true obstacles.
I think I could watch an entire mini-series of her just staring at me. And that body! The scene with her dancing around in her underwear to "I'm Your Venus"...damn.
@@gimmibox The last show that built a moment like that really well was Hell on Wheels... i hate it, bc it got me. She was so composed all the time, then... relatable.
It could be called a extended movie, Anya Taylor-Joy did not carry the whole thing though, she was only on for a like a minute in the first episode, he overlooked that great performance by that child Isla Johnston as young Beth Harmon that made many get hooked to watch more episodes and the entrance of older Beth that much better.

Yeah, or visit him, but keep in mind he loved her like a daughter and he got his money's worth. Her success was his success. As they say the greatest teachers are the ones whose students outgrow their teachers.
She never thought about visiting him, not even once. She never acknowledged that it all started from that little room and that table, and the man who helped her recognize her talent and opened the doors of opportunity for her. She realized all that when it was too late, and it was just that she felt bad.
@@youknowwho9203 The character of Beth, as portrayed in the show, was obviously on the spectrum of autism. Possibly Asperger's. This would impact her relationships with people, her perceived empathy, and her focus on the game as it relates to the rest of her life.
This was a total out of left field series for me. And I really, really liked it. I just wish she would have been able to go back to see Mr. Shaible one last time, because that's the relationship that I loved the most.

I really loved it, one of my favorite moments was when she was in Russia and she was playing against the elder Russian Champion and when she is a bit star struck when meeting him as she played his games when she was younger and smiles to retort that he played her games in preparation with him saying she is quite something. Then they both smile and embrace. It is these kind of moments that were littered throughout the series that made it great.
This is such an AMAZING story man, we watched it just because we were bored and just ended up watching the entire series in a day without even realising how much time had passed. @@dallascowboyshighlights9632 what was the slightly unattractive scene you think of? I feel like I know what u talking about but can't put a finger on it
As a recovering addict myself, I related to Beth on such a deep level. Her inner anger, harsh self criticism, and lack of self value really hit home with me. What also hit home was watching her pull herself out of it. Excellent series. 9/10
Totally agree. This is the part of the series that I got the most emotional about. To see someone be so self destructive, and to also see yourself in that person, was extremely moving. I had constant tears through episodes 5-7.
As the brother and brother-in-law of two, they are very petty to their social circle, who are also people they compete against often, or have at one point. They're also surprisingly cliquey and gossipy. Maybe other people have had different experiences with other groups. But these were young players.
If you dont have high iq to be able to creatively solve problems and good short memory i dont think any of us would stand any chance against someone who does have it. This game like many others is so cerebral that only genetically gifted will do good at it. Others will do at most decent and with tremendous sacrafice, training and devotion. But if u want to do it for yourself just to have a little fun and brain exercise - this is great, do it!
Not surprising, it’s made for people that are unfamiliar with Chess. They hardly focus on the board itself for people that know chess to actually see the moves properly.
While watching this show, I thought "Wow I should get back into chess" - and then i remembered other than knowing which pieces do what, I've always been trash at chess lmao
My wife watched the first episode, stopped, waited for me to come home and said; We are watching this together. So we did. Thank you wifu. This series was fucking amazing.
I’m amazed at how little credit the young Beth actress gets. In my opinion her performance was the best on the entire show. She was perfect every single scene.
This is one of those bizarre pieces I binged out of boredom after exhausting my normal seasonal shows. 10/10. Was satisfying from beginning to end, despite my lack of knowledge or give-a-damn regarding chess going into it.
Huge credits to Scott Frank who wrote and directed (as he did with the limited series “Godless” also on Netflix). So much has been written and spoken about Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance, all of it well deserved - she literally portrays every known emotion under the sun with complete believability - but we should not overlook the star of the first episode, Isla Johnson, who plays the young Beth, whose performance is nothing less than (to use Mr. Shaibel’s words), astounding. Brilliant series, perfectly executed by everyone from the writer/director to the set designers to the costuming people, you feel entrenched in every scene and every location. Every single actor brought their A-game to this, and I ended up binging it three times and now go back to watch favorite scenes (especially the competitions) over and over. Best thing I’ve seen on TV in years.
Spoiler: Overall I found it very entertaining with a couple of dragged moments but also a couple of excellent peaks, the scene where she finds out that the janitor cared about her for all those years was masterfully executed imo 8
I found it especially strong, because she usually isn't crying like that. The other moments, where she cries it's usually because of losing and it feels more like anger and less like sadness and loss.
Agreed. This was my favorite scene, fleeting as it was. It was one of those instances where the film version conveys the emotion more powerfully than the book can. As an aside, I did read the book as well (it's a fast read and highly recommended) and the series is remarkably close to the book, apart from some extra character development and some minor changes. I think the filmmaker did an excellent job with this adaptation.
I've played chess.. been to a few tournaments back in high school went to a couple club meetings at Uni. BUT I've never been as good as I'd like to be and after watching this mini series i feel like i wanna go read every book and study every game caz damnn it was soo good and inspirational. wow.
@@Justme-fz1ng chess is one of those things that even if you start as a 5 year old and practice as much as you can, the chances of becoming good enough to make great money is really small. Even a top 200 player isn't gonna make a great living if you just play and don't coach or anything

I loved how the friends she didn't really know she had all came through for her in the end. It must've meant a lot to her in that moment and I felt she should be with them more.
It made me feel like I was watching an exceptionally good adaptation of an anime for two reason: 1. Showcases a sport I didn’t find interesting (and have now come to appreciate) 2. Interesting rival characters who become the MC’s ally
Most anime has shitty and generic plot tho. The only reason why I watch anime because of the art. There are soem anime with God tier plot like AOT and Peulla Magica Madoka
@@gilded_lady - Exactly! The first thing I thought about when read the premise is HnG. No former chess master as a ghost to inhabit Beth but she did have some help - pills, booze and drugs. She won at least two games with help of pills. This btw, is my only gripe with the show - that without pills should fell apart as a chess player.
I came back from work, felt pretty tired and took a nap. Woke up at around 3am maybe, and I couldn't sleep. I've had Netflix for a couple of months now but I've only used it to re-watch old shows. Haven't actually seen anything new. I'm a casual chess fan, played it a lot as a kid, so the title caught my eye. Ended up watching the entire show up until the last 23 minutes, where I had to pause and get some rest. Finished it as soon as I woke up. I loved the characterization of Beth Harmon, played brilliantly by Anya Taylor-Joy. I just loved Beth's wardrobe that oozed so much beauty, grace, and elegance without going overboard. The cute little watch on Beth’s delicate wrist reminded me of my mum and granny, who wore these ultra-feminine wristwatches. All beautifully depicting an era before the unisex revolution of the ’60s changed the world. I particularly liked the confident, powerful yet feminine gait with which Beth moves about… The kind of bearing one gets by knowing that she has it in her. These little nuances of Beth's character tell us that the real power is within us.
I loved the fashions they chose, that late 60's Grace Kelly type clothing, I wished I owned the rain coat she wore throughout Russia, all of her clothes, once she'd started buying her own things, were exceptionally stylish
Ok great review as usual, and I was invested from first episode a great series. I also broke with joy in my heart and tears when some of the male competitors still showed respect after loosing and seemed to give credit where its due. It was beautifully done, you were able to connect with all the characters and felt something for each. Side note I realized while watching your review to is I've always loved my dark haired guys Keanu Reeve , Jake Gyllenhaal, Adam Driver hair combo. Loving your longer thicker haired, locked in look, and hope this made you smile. Learned to things about my self today, I have a type and I need to dust off my chess set.
As someone who played a TON of chess back in the day that scene of Tony Stark going "Alright, you shoot my guy I shoot him let's go." is EXACTLY how it feels when you get down to the wire. What's even more intense, is the other player is ALSO feeling that type of way, so ONE wrong move and you are screwed.

This limited series was so incredibly amazing. The acting and everything it felt so real and exciting. Beth was so well written. I've never watched a better movie/show. The ending was incredible and a sequel isn't even needed. Beth fulfilled her story I literally have no questions regarding her future and I've never felt that way about a ending.
Yeah but at that time there were already many hrand master chess player. Sure the highest femlae rank in the world is Top 8 and IMAGINE one of the TOP 10 people in the world. That it self is a beast. Also as the show showed you need points to earn the rights for a duel. If someone has higher rank than you, you dont see gender but that persons rank. It is just Sad that there are less women interested in chess but then again lost women wants to be Doctors, amd Lawyers so the smart ones would choose a better one I think. well I hope one day another female will break top 10 and hopefully top 1, knowing that girls can now dream big in our current world. 4:40 It's a testament to the extraordinary drive and life of Bobby Fischer. The story resembles his a lot, growing up in poverty in Brooklyn with a single mom, prodigy rising through the ranks in the 50s, taking on the Russians... there's a great biography titled Profile of a Prodigy... Anyways, chess master here and i think your first minute forty is the best advert for chess ever man. Loved it.
thanks for the recommendation it's been 2 weeks since I first saw the Queen's Gambit, and many rewatches later I'm feeling the urge to mingle with other things again. Goodness for a solid week anything else I watched tasted like ashes, after experiencing such a delicacy that is this series.
I absolutely loved The Queen's Gambit also binged it pretty fast! It's by far the best thing I've seen in years! It grips you so emotionally and takes you on a fun ride of highs and lows. Yet there was no reference to or flashback to the 9 year old Orphan Beth Harmon going to Duncan High School and beating 12 high school chest club members. I was waiting for someone in the next 6 episodes to remember her 9 year old prodigy's first chest match! You would think in that chest world someone would definitely remember that. But otherwise a 12 out 10 for an off the charts movie experience!
Really good review. I love that you love chess! It was fun to watch this with my Chess loving husband because he could follow the games and they did a great job with those as well. This better win all the awards this year.
i also just realized how in the opening scene of the pilot episode, we see here come late to the match with borgov in paris, but we still think she is doing well overall in her life, but then after we play back her whole life story and we get to that match again we care about it much more than we did at first. and we start caring less about previous matches she did. this all reminded me about how in our personal life, we worry about something so much but then it passes and we dont care about it as much in the future, but if we looked at our life from "a bird's eye view" we wouldnt really care about our present problems because we will eventually be fine
It's worth checking out the audio book (currently "included" with an Audible subscription) - they did a good job of bringing out the internal monologue stuff for the show by using the foster mom as an audience surrogate, but the drama of the chess matches is very well done to the point of being able to follow along move by move. I've been slowly listening ahead while watching the show and have enjoyed both.
great review!! I would have to say this mini series was perfect in every way, shape and form from the characters, actors and storyline stat to finish. Ive watched many series/ movies but this is by far the best ive ever seen!! You made a point where you said you couldve thought that was based on a true story which i think is extremely hard to do in a tv show and cant think of a show that comes close. I agree that i wish i couldve seen more of the actual matches and was thinking what would of made the mini series perfect was putting the actual matches somehow in the credits!! This mini series in my opinion is a masterpiece from start to finish!! I dont even think there were any boring fill in boring bits where you loose interest or things are too slow... Everything was on point even the ending. The Queens Gambit = Masterpiece mini series 10/10
Love thisssss! Truly caught mw off guard! So amazing and Anya Taylor Joy singlehandedly carried this. The last episode was phenomenal. Im glad there wont be a season 2 because it ended on such a great note.

Was a great time! Every single episode was a good time, specially the last episode! I had to watch it twice😍
i also just realized how in the opening scene of the pilot episode, we see here come late to the match with borgov in paris, but we still think she is doing well overall in her life, but then after we play back her whole life story and we get to that match again we care about it much more than we did at first. and we start caring less about previous matches she did. this all reminded me about how in our personal life, we worry about something so much but then it passes and we dont care about it as much in the future, but if we looked at our life from "a bird's eye view" we wouldnt really care about our present problems because we will eventually be fine
It's worth checking out the audio book (currently "included" with an Audible subscription) - they did a good job of bringing out the internal monologue stuff for the show by using the foster mom as an audience surrogate, but the drama of the chess matches is very well done to the point of being able to follow along move by move. Hey Jeremy, if you like Chess watch Queen of Katwe, it’s has David Oyelewo and Lupita Nyungo in it. This review definitely made me interested in the series.
All I can say is I wish all shows were as well done as this series. Casting was perfect, set was spot on and the cinematography was excellent.
If you like this, you should watch Pawn Sacrifice! It's one of my favorite movies!
This is my new all time favorite show. I finished it a few days ago and have just felt empty and drained since. I have never been drawn into a show like this before. I usually don’t rewatch shows after I’ve finished them but I really want to rewatch it at some point. It’s crazy to think it was only 7 episodes and I finished it in 2 days but it felt so much longer and than that.
@Jeremy Jahns, if you want to see more of the chess matches, there is a guy on youtube called Adagamtor chess who breaks down every chess match in the show and the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, and the historical match that each chess match is based on.
