Mamamoo is my #1 female group in kpop. Their vocals are out of this world and can do any type music.
For male groups that are on par with Mamamoo, check out more EXO. They are vocal Kings for a reason. Miracles in December is a good ballad. As is a pre debut with Bakehyun and D.O. called What is Love.

The album this song is on, Where Are We, was released in June 2021 as an all-ballad EP with four songs. It’s a masterpiece, but if you look back at the reviews at the time, it seems that it had mixed reviews. Part of that might be because there were only four songs (short for an EP; and one of the songs was a redo of an older song). But part of it, in my definitely non-expert opinion, is the question of genre. What is this song? Who does an all-ballad album? Why isn’t there at least one energetic bop on the album? Is this K-pop?
The answer to these questions is that Mamamoo made an album that was truthful to who they were, and where they were, at the time that they made it. If you watch the four-part documentary Where Are We Now, which gives a candid look at the four members in the period leading up to the 7th anniversary, it becomes clear where this album comes from. They were struggling. Their group chat had gone silent for weeks. No one knew how Wheein was feeling. The small things were no longer giving them joy. “Where Are We Now?” was a very real question.
By the way, the ending of the song has Wheein and Hwasa, childhood friends, harmonizing “on this beautiful star we shared the same dream together”. 😭 ❤

Not sure if anyone has mentioned but WAWN was released in the middle of summer, right when everyone was releasing summer bops, cause, well, it's summer. Mamamoo, however, didn't care about the trends (gosh i love them) and released an all-ballad album instead. This was the time when their 7 yr contract is nearing the end and they will be asked whether to renew (a shorter period this time 3yrs) or not. If there's one thing about mamamoo, they did not stop working since debut. Literally no day-offs in the first few years of their career. They admit that they're so tired, so instead of fooling the public and going with the trend, they released a ballad instead. After this, wheein left the company but signed an extension contract with Mamamoo until 2023. Mamamoo will start their very first world tour concert this Nov until next year. After 2023, well, let's cross the bridge when we get there.

Mamamoo wasn't trained to be an "Idol" group, they were trained to be ARTISTS, and that they are. I created this list (and other lists) because of how much I adore Mamamoo, and I find reactors asking for certain types of their songs, another reactor asked for ballads too. I hope you enjoy this list as much as he did. If there is an MV, that's usually best to watch for a reaction, I have added lyric videos for all of the songs (and from a great channel), just incase there wasn't an official MV for the song, and I could only find a live performance. Oh I also will mark ones that aren't safe for reactions. The reason I added the "not safe" ones are for your personal pleasure, because they are not to be missed! OH Also, obviously you have seen/hear "Where are we now", but it's in the list, and there is a STUNNING live version (the second link for that song, it's for Musicgraphy). This is a bonus song (It's honestly one of my ALL TIME favorite songs from Hwa Sa, the emotion in her voice makes me cry everytime). It's a duet with Whee In (who is amazing as well), about best friends who fall in love with the same man. As with all Sketchbook performances, I've heard if you flip the screen you can use it, or if you pause it while watching, ect. Kpop can mean several different things, kinda like Mamamoo songs and MVs. It can refer to Korean pop music in general or the Korean music industry and its unique training and group formation system but I think of kpop as a multi-disciplinary art form practiced by teams of performers, songwriters, choreographers, stylists and videographers. One of the things that makes Mamamoo stand out is that they're involved in all 5 creative areas in collab with their artistic team at RBW rather than just being performers.
On one level WAWN is about a couple's reality check on their relationship but moomoos see it as a song about Mamamoo's 7 year journey as a group. The MV is deceptively simple but there's some buried symbolism in the images and it follows the usual MMM format where the members express their personal feelings about the theme and emotions of the song in their individual shots and then the group comes together at the end. Where Are We Now was part of a year long 7th anniversary project in 2021 that included the 4 ballad EP Where Are We, a documentary about the group that's also called Where Are We Now, and a 2 cd career retrospective album called I Say Mamamoo: The Best, which consisted of 2 new songs plus 21 new recordings of their hits and favorite b-sides, mostly re-arrangements and remixes previously only heard during award show performances or MMM concerts.

@@ChandlerAguiar It's only natural that everyone focuses on the performers but kpop is really a team sport and each discipline is a sub-team under the umbrella of the mega-team known by the group's name. That's got obvious advantages and has produced some brilliant results but it also leads to the idol vs artist debate about the performers, which is what you seemed to be referring to when you brought up the question about Mamamoo and kpop.

If you put this video side by side with BTOB's "The Song" & BTS' "Yet To Come" (these mvs are released not far apart and in this order) It's like the same story/theme interpreted by different groups. All of them are seniors (7 yrs old & above) reminiscing their journey and somehow comforting the fans that it's not the end. In Korea, there's this thing called the "7-yr curse" where most idols disband after 7 yrs (the length of 1 CONTRACT period. I know it's insane). But yeah. Glad people mentioned BTOB cause MMM is like their male counterpart.
