- Ash does a walkaround and flight in this gorgeous #PiperSaratoga! An absolutely awesome luxury 6-place single engine aircraft, this was Piper's replacement to the Comanche production line. The Saratoga is the later of the PA32 line, preceded by the PA32 Cherokee 6 and the PA32 Piper (Cherokee) Lance.

To be the best plane in any category, all you need is "Piper" in the name.
Oooh careful what you say, you might rile up some Cessna and Beechcraft fans/owners.
But to be fair, the PC-12 NGX is the top dog in single engine turboprops.
@@CreepinCreeper145 It certainly is the Chevy Suburban of airplanes. If you got a three kid family, it will haul all the crap that follows a clan like that... and with useful load left over... However, price and maintenance is a killer for the PC 12. The less squawk prone M600 is top in class, and at a reasonable price. I do love the PC 12, but bang for the buck, the M600 is the very best all around turboprop ever made.
@@hawkdsl By "squawk prone" do you mean emergency prone?
I learnt to fly in a Tomahawk RPPL, xcoubtry in Warriors up to initial CPL training. I then continued in PA32 including CPL test.
Years as an ATPL but continued to fly the 32 when able.
I have, way in the past, flown Bonanzas/Barons, C206/7 and 210, in my opinion, not as good as a 32. Also flown Malibu which was good.
Even as a jet pilot moonlighted in the 32
I love them, a perfect small passenger/cargo aircraft, a flying station wagon, easy to operate and roomy (im 6'3"). Taken my family on holidays in them across Aus, Europe renting them in UK (I held their licence) also in USA.
A Piper 235/6 with its 6 cyl Lyc eng, a good machine too. Great load carrier
Great aircraft! I’d love one as a family hauler
This was an excellent format! Loved the walk around and flight.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed 😁
What a GREAT video! So informative and so well done! Thank you for doing this!
You're very welcome, appreciate the kind words
I had mine for just under 20 years. It was a wonderful airplane and took me all over the US. I strongly recommend the Saratoga as a cross country IFR capable platform fir a family of four.
Glad you agree! Such a good plane! 😁
How does it do in incidental ice?
@@coasternut3091 Mine had only a heated prop. Ice was a thing to be scrupulously avoided and I did so, so I can't say how it would have done.
Hey guys! If you enjoyed this video, please SUBSCRIBE! It only takes a second and it helps us out a heap. Cheers, Ash :)
Currently looking for my first airplane and the Saratoga definitely seems to be a better buy than the Cherokee Six. I love it.
Saratogas are awesome if you’re happy with the couple $$ extra for maintenance. Cherokee 6s (300 not the 260) are awesome planes too. Just a bit slower but will haul whatever you put in them :)
06 Saratoga 2 TC is my baby with a mod of a IO-720 fantastic climb out loaded and a saving of 4gal an hour. Lots of mods. No parachute. LOL 🤠😎
You put a 720 in a Saratoga!? That’s awesome
Excellent video!!
So full of information and great video 👍👍
Thank you! :)
I used to fly a Saratoga out of Camden airport a few years ago. Lovely aircraft. My favourite. I flew Arrows before that, so it was a nice comfy step up when I ended up with more kids.
Great vid mate. Well done.
They are a great aircraft, very comfortable. Thanks for the comment
I have a 2006 Saratoga ll TC and she is just a joy to fly. The Avidyne EX5000 cockpit is intuitive and effective, but support is scant and expensive. The fully coupled AP takes the aircraft down to 200’ without a problem when used with Jeppesen charts via the twin GNS430W’s. No more that two adults in the back for comfort and still keeping 3.5 hrs endurance is the best you can do. She’s nose heavy so load from the back is the recommendation. A very sort after six seater.
I’m so excited to flying a PA32 in my times and what a Highly Single engine non asperated aircraft and the three blade prop made a big difference on climb out and cruise once the gear is up and flaps raised and positive rate of climb and yes the T-Tail was not good on the time when you needed more elevator on your flare on landing..
I never had an issue with the T-tail Lance; carrying an extra 5-10kt into the flare was all it took.
I was trained in Pipers and always enjoyed flying them including the Saratoga. Ended up with C210 only because of the utility and more comfort for a tall pilot like me!! Saratoga is cabin class for most people with lots of comfort...
The 210 certainly has a more flexible seating position! Great aircraft, I loved flying them. We’ve got a 210 video coming out soon actually. Thanks for watching :)
I have a fair amount of time in a both the Saratoga and Saratoga SP. Great flying planes. They have an excellent useful load.I have flown both with myself and five passengers. The club seating is very nice. They handle a bit truck like and they are stable IFR platforms. The forward baggage compartment as you say is great for weight and balance.
Absolutely, great aircraft. Thanks for watching and commenting John!
Just bought a 1981 PA32R-301! It needs some minor fixes but what I really feel like I’m missing is the original POH. I’ve downloaded one for the same year and model and it indicates under Normal Procedures (cold start) that I go mixture full rich, turn on the fuel pump and turn on the engine with the fuel pump on and then the procedure goes to Hot Start, never indicating “fuel pump off”. I have very few hours in Saratoga’s, but what I’ve always seen done is mixture rich, fuel pump on for aprox 5 seconds, mixture cutoff, fuel pump off, crank to start, engine starts, immediately mixture full rich.
What am I missing in the poh that indicates something completely different?
Awesome Video!!!
Thank you!!
Very nice. Flying as a crewman all my life. Just getting into the pilot side, I appreciate the review
Thanks!
My favorite is the PA32-260 with a CS prop
Four people, full fuel, four sets of golf clubs, a great plane.
I love the Cherokee 6, great aircraft! Does everything a 206 does at a much reduced purchase price!
@@DeadstickAdventures Purchase price reflects sale price. Far easier to sell a 206 as opposed to a Cherokee 6 also.
The C210 is good for golf. The rear seats come out quickly and 4 bums with clubs works very well.
@@petersmith8134 whats your point ?
you buy let say at 500.000,- and sell at 200.000,- (206) or you buy at 300.000,- and sell at 100.000,- (piper). The loss is the same. And when the Piper is cheaper to operate, piper wins.
@@lv8920 Show me a 500k 206 that sold for 200k please.
I did my constant speed retractable in jgm way back in 1996.I did about 30 hours in it,always a lovely forgiving aircraft to fly.
Oh no way! Was that back when it was in Adelaide? It’s had quite a number of owners by the looks!
@@DeadstickAdventures back then it was owned by john perrit from hay.i used to hire it from him.it was beige exterior thin red stripes down the sides.inside was a maroon velour on the seats.I believe it was sold to someone from Adelaide .worst decision I made was not buying it at the time.regards lawrence
The Aircraft I’ve flown was a Saratoga SP model
I own a straight tail Lance, the precursor to the Saratoga. One of the wing gauges flew out and had it overhauled at Piper Lock Haven Parts for $170. They won’t replace just the gauge. Mine are super accurate and easy to read. Same fuel tank system, but the toga holds 8 gallons more. Toga doesn’t hold as much weight as a Lance either. Parts are similar.
Wow that’s a good price. Touch an airplane here in Australia and it costs $1000 🤣
Awesome video Ash!! Would love to hear your opinions on an Arrow 😁!
Thanks M! Great idea! We might have to make that happen in the new year 😁
Excellent video. I'm looking to transition to one of these from a 152 Aerobat. Looks like I have my work cut out if I can even get one in the UK as the best prices are all overseas. Has to be a late model though.
Should be do-able. Perhaps fly a 4 seater Cherokee first as they are quite similar. Something like an Archer or Warrior would be a great intermediate step
Great review.
Make one on a Seneca as well and compare it with the Saratoga.
Channel Subscribed!👍
Great idea! Just need to get our hands on a Seneca 😁
Great airplane
Agreed!
Many thousands of hours bush flying in Botswana on Saratogas, 210s, 206s. Love the Saratoga for its space but oleos are a problem on rough strips. The manual flap gives it the edge !!
Great to hear you loved the Toga. I bet the flying in Botswana would’ve been spectacular! Yeah we too find the oleos suffer on our PA28 trainer aircraft on rocky strips!
5:26 the t-tail lance has the two tank one filler + sight gauge as well.
Good point!
Same with my straight tail. One of the wing gauges flew out and had it overhauled at Piper Lock Haven Parts for $170. They won’t replace just the gauge. Mine are super accurate and easy to read
This is my dream plane
Ours too! ❤️
Ripper of a video once again!, love the PA32s, particularly like commands VH-TLG
Thanks! 😁 TLG is a great aircraft!
very nice

Hey guys amazing video, I have a few questions about command flight training working with Sace..
1. Are there only certain school that you can work with? In my case I’d like to know if you can work with Open access college.
2. Is the safe couse an RPL?
3. What year level can you start the course with Command flight training.
Cheers guys amazing video!
Hey thanks for the message! Send CFT an email - ops@flycommand.com.au and I can get the SACE manager to answer those questions for you! Cheers, Ash
Aussie music - Shins? was it "whinging the night away?"
What is the VMO n Vno of the Saratoga compared to 21
I trusted the sight gauge way more than I trusted the fuel gauge in the cockpit on the 301t I flew
Haha yeah. Nothing beats a dipstick though! When I flew in the US there were no dipsticks with the planes - we had to trust the gauges or fill to fill every time. Crazy system!

I’m sure someone here who’s more familiar can help answer
I think this plane would be perfect for the new small Rolls Royce turbin will it work with the extra baggage space in front ?
Yeah it probably would be a good one for that!
If you're referring to the RR500 turboprop, it never went into production though, and the bigger M250 wouldn't make the plane much faster - just more expensive to run from the fuel burn. The baggage space isn't an issue as a turboprop Saratoga would have the engine mounted at least a foot or more forward for CG reasons.
I don't think this was meant to be a Comanche replacement as it's a 6-seater whereas the Comanche was a 4-seat. Great airplane though; I restored a T-tail Lance for the owner in the early aughts and flew it for two years. PA32 are stable load haulers with lots of elbow room for bigger guys like me. It's a shame Piper stopped building the Saratoga after 2005, but Cirrus was eating everyone's lunch.
It was more the fact that Piper didn’t have any retractable singles at the time so they opted for the 6 seater. Probably for the best too as it could compete better with the A36 and Cessnas.
They are a great plane, such a shame Piper stopped building them. I think they would still sell really well if they did! Thanks for the comment :)
Comanche 260b and 260c have six seats!
@@KeepItSimpleSemperFi if the rear two have no legs
@@DeadstickAdventures What's odd is the 5 year overlap between the first Arrow in 1967 and the last Comanche in 1972. If the Arrow was the Comanche replacement, they took their time killing off the old model.
What is a stratos? It is mentioned during the interior description that is placed between the front seats by the owner.
Good question, it’s a Stratus ADS-B receiver that hooks into the EFB app on your iPad to display traffic on your screen. Great device. We use it with OzRunways. It can also be used as an EFIS with a basic attitude indicator.
@@DeadstickAdventures thanks!
The roominess of a piston twin with the useful load of a 172...
And the head room of a VW beetle 😉
Could you drop a CD 300 Jet A Diesel in these? The new PA 28 has a CD option so the mounts and everything should be compatible with a few mods if needed. Is it viable? On insurance etc etc.
I’ve got my doubts given it’s a discontinued airframe. Would be cool though!
@@DeadstickAdventures Avgas is just leaded petrol like we used to use in the 1980s. its just not acceptable any more and Im not even an eco nut job. Lead. In the petrol! To dumb down the bang and keep the cylinder cool. Its not good technology and no one knows why we still use it. So strange. Maybe people dont know or care. but petrol. in a plane?! Are you stupid. Diesel is obviously better. Let alone leaded petrol! WTF!
I prefer the Cessna 206/210 over the Piper Saratoga personally because the useful load is bigger and the inside feels more spacious to me.
Definitely, I love the 206s and 210s. I just prefer the maintenance bills on the Saratoga.
Also the back seats of a 200 series Cessna aren’t the nicest place to be if you’re tall!
But they are ugly 😅😅
Is it possible to remove console between pilot seats, so a non-athletic person can move from the club seats to the co-pilot position?
Yep the console is totally removable. It’s still a bit of a squeeze but not too bad. Just be super careful of the fragile plastics on the roof!
@@DeadstickAdventures thanks!
What about the Piper Lance 2 Turbo, is it worth it?
I’d avoid the T Tails personally. The Turbo could be nice if you want to go high
Nice job but I just want to point out that that's not a Saratoga II HP.
Yeah not sure why they wrote that on it… 🤷♂️
What about the Mooney
use LOP on the fuel :)))
We do 😉
I just fell in love. I thought i wanted a Cherokee 6 buti was wrong. LoL.
Haha the owner of this aircraft thought he wanted a Cherokee 6 too…
@@DeadstickAdventures Saratoga wins. Thanks
30-50 hrs for insurance.. isn't the only big complexity from the PA28 CSU and retractable?.. you'd take less than that getting a whole instrument rating lol
Yeah absolutely. However, the owner wanted to drive his premium down and also wanted to do some extra cross country training to build his confidence in the aircraft. At this stage he plans on only flying it VFR and NVFR.
You trashed the Cherokee 6 PA 32-260. Flies fine. Does everything Piper said it would do..ageee with the 3 blade constant speed. Cheap to keep, feed. Nice characteristics. Be nice.
Very true, they’re certainly still a good plane. We actually had one briefly in one of our other videos.
how much do they cost
Good question! We’re seeing them range between $100k and $250k at the moment, depending on condition
How much does this plane cost
I think the owner paid somewhere in the region of $220k AUD for it
From what I see there is no room for both polite . Whisch planes gives a little room for Polite

I don't like the fact you can't lean the seats back a little. the 2 up front and right behind pilots make you sit too up right. I want a plane where I can put the seats back at least 6 inches. C210 all day long. Better load and I fly to look down, not up.
Agreed, Cessnas have the edge there! ^MP
The best 6 seater single is without a doubt an A36. Best engineering, built quality, and speed. Then a long gap and C210s and PA32s can fight over 2nd place.
You think so Jan? I’ve never flown one so can’t comment. Perhaps I’ll get to in the future on this channel? :) ^MP
No shit! Best aircraft is Piper.
Depends on the mission, no? :) ^MP
Pipers are horrible junk. This one especially. Anemic, old, slow. 140kt cruise? Who cares if you have 6 seats? You can't use them all in the same flight. Real dumb design. Insurance companies will NOT insure a retratactable aircraft if you do not have over one hundred hours with retractable time...
What are you comparing them to Speedo? TBM, Cirrus, sure. Gotta factor in $/year too :) ^MP
No, get a clue. Malibu Mirage is the best piston single in the world for the money, saratoga doesn’t even come close to capabilities and comfort and most important, resale value. Not even a G36 bonanza can compare to a Mirage.
The subject is not about million dollar pressurized aircraft. The majority of general aviation pilots don't fly in the flight levels, and are not fans of the nose hose either. You notice the P210 was not mentioned for similar reasons.
@@ConvairDart106 nothing you said makes sense, nobody uses a nose hose in a pressurized airplane and the Mirage is so good on fuel it doesn’t need to be in the flight levels, it does everything better than any comparable airplane without compromises.
You're comparing the Saratoga and G36 to a cabin-class turbo'd & pressurized single? Apples and oranges.
A nose hose! Never heard it called that haha. And yep, we’re comparing sub-$500k aircraft here since that’s what the majority of GA is made up of. Not to say we wouldn’t review a Mirage if one popped up! ^MP
Who on earth calls cars and planes “she”. What is wrong with people.
Boats are she? Why not cars and planes?
Because they are things just like boats, not something I want to sleep with.
she's a bird. by all means
At first I thought the Piper Saratoga was a Piper Arrow? I had only been up in a Piper Arrow, only once. It felt like a Cadillac. Compared to the Piper Cherokee 140 & 180's. My dad and I both, flew. I learned with dad learning. He was taking pilot lessons. I got to sit in the backseat. And then I got to take some, Flying Lessons, myself. With my dad's instructor. Dad paid for, for me.
Unfortunately my parents marriage fell apart. Dad would move away. So would we. I never flew a civilian aircraft again. And I loved it. I wanted to join the Air Force. But found I did not qualified to become a, jet fighter pilot. I said that's okay. I'll fly anything. They said no. As I did not have a college degree. And that was a prerequisite. So I did not enlist. I just continued on in radio stations and recording studios. And then purchased myself a motorcycle. So I could bank around turns. And go writing those mountain roads in the, Shenandoah, Allegheny, Blue Ridge Pkwy., Algonquin, Poconos, mountain roads. Almost like flying a plane. Instant death if you miss a turn. As you would fall between 1500 and 4000+ feet. And I made it a point, not to do that. While finding out first hand. Park rangers run radar in the mountains. Whoops. Not good doing 75 in a 35 zone. In my much younger years. That was counterproductive to do. But what fun! I was Hanging Off. Some people will know what that means. My knee was, nearly scraping the ground. To offset the center of balance on turns. The closest I would ever get to flying.
I miss flying. I was a much better pilot than dad. But I never got my pilots license. Oh but wait.
In a Happenstance, opportunity. About 23 years ago. I was able to hop in the cockpit. Of the just entering, service. Lockheed's, F-22 Raptor. And took it for a flight. Not having flown in about 35 years. I just flew that plane. How is that possible? What kind of bullshit am I spewing forth? I'm not. It's true.
I was hired on as a freelance video camera operator at the U.S. Air Force Association Conventions. And I had been observing, US Military Fighter Pilots. Checking out this new F-22 Raptor. Just entering service. These guys were flying F-14's, 15s, 16s. They weren't Navy so no F-18's. I guess? But I digress.
So at the end of the day of, the Convention. I asked the, Boeing/Lockheed guy. If I could try that F-22 out? He said sure. Have you flown the F-14's, 15s or 16s? He asked. I said nope. Never, ever. Only a Piper Cherokee 140. About 35 years ago. He said okey-dokey get in.
So with minimal prep. I just started flying this F-22, Boeing, $12 million simulator. And it was Awesome! Beyond awesome!
Apparently I did a good job. And didn't know I was being, observed. By five, US Military Fighter Pilots. And they all asked me. Had I been flying the F-14's, 15s or 16s?
I was rather dumbfounded by their inquiry. I said nope. Never. This was a first try for me in, 35 or so years. And they asked me why I didn't join the Air Force? I told them. I tried all 4 branches of our US Military. They didn't want to let me fly. I didn't have a college degree.
They in turn told me I had missed my calling. I said no. I did not. But the US Military missed out on a good pilot. They agreed with me. We all shook hands and went on our separate ways.
It was an incredible thrill. To just get in the cockpit of a F-22. Much alone, and attempt to fly it. I only had some basic engineering skills. And whatever I could remember from a Piper Cherokee 140 from 35 years earlier. But in turn it also destroyed me.
I cannot play any video games. I could not play any arcade. Microsoft Flight Simulator is, beyond a child's joke. Compared to the cockpit of the F-22 Raptor.. Nothing compares.
I mean how am I supposed to play,, Fighter Jet. With the stupid Chinese made, $50 joystick? How insulting! Are they kidding? Supposed to prepare you to fly a, F-22? I think not. No. You learn how to play video games with the joystick. It truly, is not like flying, an, Official Military Simulator. I meet you are in that cockpit. That is the latest, state-of-the-art, most recent release, Cockpit.
What was kind of fascinating. The plane was designed and built by Lockheed. But this was a Boeing Simulator. Because Boeing had just created this All Glass, upgraded, cockpit. Which the Lockheed F-22 Raptor. Will be introduced with the new Boeing, cockpit.
Meaning that the Lockheed designed, cockpit. Was not, All Glass. But that still contained, some steam gauge items in the original, F-22, cockpit. I guess? And entered US Military service with the Boeing cockpit.
And stuff like that just blows my mind. Talk about state-of-the-art. That's state-of-the-art, civilians weren't exactly privy to. And generally not. That was beyond state-of-the-art. It was just being introduced. No US military fighter pilots had flown one of these babies yet. They were that new and state-of-the-art. As state-of-the-art can get. I mean that is some wild stuff.
It was an incredible thrill and honor. To have gotten 10 minutes time in one. And to fly a brief simple attack mission. Of targets on the ground. In this simulation. But no less a thrill. Even though it didn't exactly really fly. It was the full-blown cockpit. And that's a much different feel. Then sitting in your bedroom. With a joystick. In other words. It does not compare.
It's sort of like the difference between an ice cream cone. And the entire cow, it came from. They don't even look similar. One does not Mooo. And melts. While the other one is standing in its own, cow pie of feces. It's that kind of difference. Between a toy joystick and a F-22 cockpit.
Now how am I supposed to play any video games ever again? I can't. It seems so trifle, stupid. Along with my toy, joystick. The plastic Taiwanese variety. And not Jewish-American apple pie. You get the idea.
As after you have sampled the original and the best. Where does that leave one? In the dust. Is, an understatement.
And I've never touched a videogame, since. How can I? Total joke.
