  • How to Install a Nucleus into a Hive
    Pretty much every beekeeper will at some point need to install a nucleus colony into a hive at some point in their beekeeping career.
    In this video, I show you a simple, foolproof technique for getting your bees out of their 'box' and into their new home.

    Thanks for this video just about to pick up our first nuc and it has given me added confidence. Keep up your excellent series. I have shared it with my bee partner.

    Thanks for this timely video. I will be installing my first 2 nucs today. I put them on top of their hives yesterday to orientate as instructed by my supplier. Is it better to install them when the flying bees are out foraging .

    Excellent production, thank you very much. I have had my nuc in a hive with standard deep brood frames for a week now, and they are doing well and expanding onto 8 frames. I wish to move them into a 14x12 box would this be okay now, or should I wait until all the frames are full? Really appreciate your guidance. Regards,

      Hi Paul. Glad you enjoyed the video. Now is fine. Have you seen my video where I've done the exact same thing? Keep at least half the frames below the excluder and they will expand outwards.

    Hi, I have chance of a 6 frame nuc on national deep frames. I am set up with 14x12 national brood box, new. How would you recommend getting nuc bees into 14x12 box.
    I wondered about trying to borrow a national box for a wee while, putting 6 frames from nuc into it with a couple of follower boards either side and sit it on top of the 14x12 with a feeder on top.
    Or just put nuc frames into 14x12 near middle and work them to the side over time. Again feeder on top. Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Good effort on the videos, good tempo and presentation.

      Hi.
      Yes I would do what you say.
      I often have a few national frames in my 14 x 12 boxes. They just draw out the additional space and extend the frame.
      You could just keep them like that.
      Or either invest in a brood box and use that as a super (thats what I do) or exchange the combs out one my one after moving them to the edge when they come honey bound.

    The frames were in the nuc the cold way, but went in the hive the warm way. Does this cause any issues?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  Před 4 lety +1

      I dont think you can get a Nuc with the frames the warm way? Warm way is always my preference as i like to work from the behind. Some hives I have to work from the side, so I go the cold way. Its personal preference. I honestly dont think the bees are too fussed as long as they are warm and dry :)

    I got the same hat as you but I can’t wear it around the bees they hate it and just attack it on site.
    On a more serious question what sort of queens are you using?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  Před 4 lety

      I love that hat. It's the only hat that has ever fit me. It's a 2XL. Bees seem ok with it? I've got a black and a green one. Both fine. I have a mix of buckfast and local mongrels. Buckfast are definitely nicer to work with :)

      Black Mountain Honey the irony of the hat business is I got it to keep them out of my hair all I can say is epic fail with that. I have some buckfast and they are great I’m going to try some black bees this year to see how they preform. Do you breed queen and sell them.

      Yes. I had to rehive a number of nucs before they had fully orientated so they thought I was home! :) I got out fine after I puffed them off with some smoke

    Hi - why do you chose not feed a nuc to help them draw out the foundation?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  Před 4 lety +1

      Sometimes I do, but there are strong flows at the moment and the weather is fine. No need for feeding at the moment. If the weather turns or the flows stop before they have drawn it out, I'll let than have some syrup.

    To be honest I looked at your suit and thought about purchasing a breathable suit...but £400 for a bee suit...really? I'm sure they are quality but £400!
