Wow, you found a treasure, huh? I bought mine at Facebook Marketplace on Oct. 2020. It came with three lenses, all Canon brand. You can download LIGHTMETERFREE on your phone app and use it as a light meter if you don't want to use the built-in light meter on your camera. Also, if the shutter is cocked and you are not using the camera, set the shutter speed at B, so as not to strain the shutter.

That "line with the circle" sign to the right of the viewfinder is actually a sign where the focal plane is and not to show you how to cross the line and the circle in the viewfinder. It is found on every single one camera.

    • @variousvisfineart

You are correct. She is describing the match needle system of metering. But the focal plane diagram is similar, so it helps new users understand the concept.

Hi Kim, Congratulations for the video it is very useful.
I have a question regarding the battery of the camera and the light meter.
Do you use a 1.5V camera? If yes, do you have accurate metering or there is no affect at the photo ?
Also, regarding the metering, the needle must be in the middle of the cycle or it is ok it is a bit up or down ?
(Keep going with the good job!)

    • @KimGarza
      @KimGarza  Před 5 lety +1

Bgiwrgos hi! Thanks for your message, I do have an accurate lightmeter, external and the lightmeter in the camera works properly, what I do is that I always have one lightmeter well calibrated (also I use an app) and then I check the lightmeters of the camera to see if the measurement is the same. It does not need to be exactly on the center, but if it is a bit of or down then you will have more or less light on your film, remember that is background, the more light you let enter the film, the more darker will be (as negative work backwards). Let me know if you need anything else :) I would love you see your analog work!

Actually couple questions if I may. I bought this camera because of its affordability and availability but also because I already had a Canon FD 28 mm lense. Can you recommend a good film brand for this and second question, would a wider lens of 28 mm be a usable lense for this camera? I’m sure this question is rather silly since the mount is made for this Camera but I just thought I would ask since it’s an older camera. Thank you for making a clear and very useful instruction for this camera

    • @variousvisfineart

IF you can find a wider lens go ahead. Canon made 20mm and 17mm and 14mm. They are a bit rare and expensive.

Yours may be broken. When the film door is opened, the counter should reset. If it broken, you can work around it by just keeping tract of how many frames you shot. Or you can get the counter fixed.

Hi there Kim. I saw watching your video that you are using a 1.5 batery. I´ve read somewhere that the FTb QL was ready for using old Mercury 1.35V batteries. So if you use a 1.5 battery might be "faking" the light mettering. Did you notice something like that? Thank you very much.

Hello there!! sometimes the lightmeters of the cameras don't work, check if the niddle moves with differents kinds of light, if it does not move then the lightmeter doesn't work but you can use an app to measure light! some antique cameras didn't have lightmeter either. If the niddle moves then the lightmeter works but then you need to check if it is properly calibrated, just check the measure of the app with your lightmeter, if it is the same then is calibrates. I think I will do a video specific about this! Will be up in a few days :)

I'm curious if I could do a long exposure (night/ astro / Aurora) with this camera. My dad had this camera and he passed away years before I got into photography myself. I use a DSLR Nikon d850 so it's quite different. Do I need to get a high iso film to do a long exposure night shot? My usual settings for G1 Aurora storm is 15 seconds, f1.4, iso 1200 or so. A powerful G4 or G5 storm I can do iso 800, f1.4, 5 seconds. So if I only have film that's iso 100, I'd have to do an insanely long photo, which would result in star trails, which isn't ideal. Advice?

The fastest film I know was in usage when I worked in a camera shop over 20 yrs ago was ASA1600. Those were typically bought by the sports photographers who needed to work with really fast exposures to freeze action.
I'm just getting into film photography now myself so not sure if they make 1600 film anymore. I bet you can find lot's of advice in forums though.

edward bedrosian the deep of field is stunning, like these portraits: www.kimgarza.com/kgprojects/equalism-project/

KimGarza yeah. that means shallow depth of field, not high detail. details actually increase when you stop down.

Both lens are sharp but the 1.4 can have a really shallow depth of focus. Sometime 1 to 2 inches leaving a image with blurred surroundings. Smaller aperture will increase the depth of field making more things in focus .

FTb is fully mechanical (not electric). That is important.

I’m getting one of these cameras because I have many FD lenses I use for my digital cameras. Not sure if the light meter works until I receive it. If it works I will use your little tip with the circle and the line through it. Who cares about the film plane . You are so sweet. Great introduction video to this vintage camera.

Few people asked you which battery you are using, you never gave a response. So you don't even know the brand and type of battery you are using, and it is there before your eyes..😁😁😁. You seem not knowing how to make a double exposure. The way you did it will end up with an overlap between the two exposures. You need to lock the rewind lever, while you press on the button at the bottom of the plate, and arm for your second shot, After the second exposure, you still need to do something else, before you are ready to take another picture, guess what it is??

Don't you know how to load a film into a FTb QL? OL means Quick Load. Put the film onto the red marker and close it. You were much to short.
