"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a DIFFERENT result." I messed the quote up, I am aware. Also, I know that Jason Todd didn't actually die. Thank you, and enjoy!
Sage's Rain Thank you for making this video.
Sage's Rain Hey great video man, thank you, but can you do a video on the tv show called Marco Polo on Netflix and Reign on Netflix.. Also can you do a video on the Star Wars Prequels on the Characters Anakin and Padme, great deep stories I believe
You should pin this so it’s on top
Green goblin or Venom are better opposing villains to Spider-man than Doctor Octopus. ( In my Opinion)
Sage's Rain you should do Ezekiel from the walking dead next. Would love to see what you'd do with the themes within his character.
I still can't believe Luke Skywalker is fire lord Ozai and the Joker!
I didn’t know he was Ozai too.
Mr. 555 He’s also Skips from Regular Show
From a good hearted hero to a heartless villain. I have always preferred Mark Hamil as villain. He is so much more interesting.
Wait what
Hamill was Ozai?? Oh shit
"One bad day has defined their entire lives", I love that quote. Perfectly sums up both characters. Great video!!
Koh TheFaceStealer thank you!
I can relate to that pretty much

"a batman who laughs" I don't know if this what you mean but are you talking about the fact that if he deos the joker an batman will become one.
@@TheKingsTrueWitness777 The Batman Who Laughs is a story of a “what if” scenario in if Batman actually had killed Joe Chill that night he saw him outside the courthouse, but then becomes the Batman Who Laughs.
The Batman Who Laughs is an absolutely terrifying concept. I mean, this guy literally killed off the entire Justice League for no other reason than "Because I can". In more recent stories, he literally brought the entire Multiverse to its knees. I absolutely love the character.
"A Batman who laughs is a Batman who always wins."
makes you wonder though, what if the joker ended up killing batman? Would it make the joker snap to do SOME good?

I love that they both have flaws. Gotham doesn't need Batman, or Joker.
Mutants don't need Professor X or Magneto.
That episode of Batman: TAS when a random crook was thought to have finally killed Batman by pure accident, and The Joker was *PISSED*
Bingo the Pug don’t forget the episode where joker thinks he’s going to be killed by a random nobody and fears for his life.
Jokes lost the will to live when he thinks bats is truly dead
I disagree that Joker is radical, random and unpredictable all the time. He's had numerous showings in which he has started with a goal in mind, and then built everything around that. Sure, at times he absolutely is maniacal and all over the place, but not all the time. He's shown he can be focused, almost to an inhuman degree, and this usually comes about when he's trying to prove something to or about Batman.
Sam Leslie that is true, I agree with that
I think what's Radical and chaotic about the Joker isn't necessarily his well thought out plans or his nature of always doing evil. But what's chaotic about Joker is what terrible thing he will do, how he plans to do it, and who he does it to. You know he's bad news, but you can never predict what bad thing he plans to to do
Sam Leslie him & Batman are the same type of person: driven , incorruptible , broken men that are being personified in their quest to prove that they are not broken afterward by showing that the world is like them
I don’t believe Sage truly understands the Joker
Tho his specific goals may change from time to time but his cores and personalities are pretty much the same
That's the thing about Joker he's so focused it can seem unfocused
"I don't wanna kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no.. you, complete me."
I know you get this a lot, but holy moly your voice is perfect!
Six Eyes thank you!
yeah great job
Six Eyes indeed it is !
On god right😂 like no homo
A beautiful freaking conclusion to a never ending story, man. Joker tried to make other people crazy to prove that he was helpless to turn into what he is now.
But after seeing Gordon and Batman make it out okay, he had finally been defeated. Not by brute force, but by the resilience of good people
In The dark knight returns , He truly admits defeat by killing himself.
but not after defaeting batman by making him lose control.
You are absolutely spot on!
i heard from another source that the joker commits those crimes - forcing people to make impossible choices, so that he can make them abandon all sense of morality, because “it’s all a joke”.
Would love to see a video that dives into the psyche of Anakin Skywalker
CJ Johnson, A million times this! One of my fav fictional characters!
Yes do one on Anakin Skywalker
Oh, yes. I would like to see that, Sage's Rain.
I got so excited when I saw this, my sister can testify. Batman and Joker’s relationship has always been one of my favorites and it’s just so iconic, the cycle they’re stuck in
1989: You MADE me
2008: You COMPLETE me
2019: You ARE me
2021: You NEED me
The Batman was already broken when his parents died. He shows his part of his face showing he wears gis humanity ever time he puts on his mask.. Batman has been broken many times. He's had everything taken from him several times/ Each time he may have been bent, but never broken. They aren't the same because of each "one bad day" only forged Batman into something stronger. Jokers question isn't why didn't Batman break, but why did he?
That said Batman is responsible for the joker not because of dropping him in some chemicals. Joker only needed an excuse a push to allow what Batman's actions caused to emerge. Batman creates more extreme versions of order someone would rise to subvert. The more extreme your tactics the more extreme your criminals. It's a balance that exists in society. it seems to be part of our psyche for now. As the brain stil leaves us a lot to understand. We can't change what we don't understand.
OverlyCaffeinated Squirrel I think it's more the other way around in terms of who creates who. Sure villains try harder to commit crimes, but heroes don't come from no where. Batman was created when a criminal took his parents, he didn't come from no where. Superheroes see the problems in society, experience them, and try to solve them. To say a superhero creates crime is pretty arrogant to boast and makes it seem like crime didn't exist before the Hero came into existence. It especially doesn't make sense when you consider most of these heroes are actually trying to help these villains to become better if they can. Especially when Batman didn't have a real hand in creating these villains in their origins.
Didn't get the light halfway across thing until you explained it. Thanks so much!!

While I agree with Sage's explanation, it could also be read as the opposite.
Joker is the first inmate, he embraced the trauma and took the leap into insanity, and all the things that he does is to get Batman to cross, but Batman is too afraid to go down that path.
Andre ooh yeah it does go both ways for them. Bruce was always afraid to get rid of his emotional baggage hence why he can't get close to anyone around him
That point is something I would like to see brought up more. One bad day is all that separates joker from the rest of the world, but the same is true of batman. They are both living their lives as a result of their incredible losses. Loss can break you, but it can also forge you into something stronger than what you were before! Batman's refusal to give in to despair is my favorite aspect of the character, just as jokers embrace of despair is what makes him so compelling.
This is what defines good writing. I've always loved characters that were opposite but similar to each other, we're two sides of a coin and had duality. That clash of two different ideologies, philosophy, perspectives and beliefs is what makes confrontation and interaction between these characters interesting and fun to watch. This is what separates them from your average good guy vs bad guy routine. Where the good guy fights and defeats a villain who doesn't have any significant impact on the hero other than challenging him and just continuing his story. There are several examples of characters being two sides of coin, my favourite ones are: Walter and Gus, Rick and The Governor, Almost all of jojo's protagonists and antagonists (Jonathan and Dio, Josuke and Kira, etc), Light and L, Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty, Hannibal and Will, Dracula and Van helsing, Angier and Borden (The Prestige), Costigan and Sullivan, Dexter and Trinity killer and Ice truck killer etc.
The lego batman movie has culminated 80+ years of batman into it, and his relationship with joker
That movie is severely underrated.
@@billyhenerson2871 Very true.
To me Batman is the second inmate the one that’s afraid to fall. Batman is afraid of what lays in the dark abyss so he doesn’t want to follow the other inmate to freedom.
Dear Sage,
I hope that with all these videos and all these deep messages you outside of this persona are okay. Every video you put out takes time and are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I thought I understood a lot of the world but you proved I can learn more, through all the Makoto Shinkai films which you introduced to the significance of a colour in a Pixar movie you have moved me. I hope you continue to share your wisdom and knowledge while also living and loving life to the fullest potential. I hope you get the chance to read this, thank you. I believe I speak on behalf of your fan base and other communities when I say just be you and we’ll support you the best way we can. Thanks
I think you’re missing a vital point in that final joke. The punchline isn’t the fear that the light will go out, but the absurdity of thinking you could walk on that light in the first place. I see this point as the crux of The Joker’s philosophy. We’re that scared prisoner, and the light is our guiding principles as a people. We genuinely believe that our principles will hold us up, and keep us from falling, if only the light would stay lit. The Joker however believes that’s impossible, as comically impossible as thinking you could physically walk on light.
It's irrelevant whether Batman or the joker was the first or second inmate. The fact that both are insane but help each other escape insanity is the joke. in context, Batman says he wants to help the joker. Clearly this not possible.
For those of you wondering, the song in the beginning is called: “It was The Joker”
It’s such a great song imo
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, batman sticks joker in arkham and pretty much waits for him to break out. Maybe he isn't insane, maybe he wants him to...
The first inmate being batman is not the only interpretation. In fact from the jokers perspective it makes more sense for batman to be the second inmate. Bat man wont kill. He wont admit that life holds not intrensic value and so he doesnt want to fall. He doesnt see the joker path as freedom he sees it as death and so if the joker is the one holding the flashlight and he decides to cross then it means he will surely doe shortly after making that choice. Batman has math and science and is therefore devoid of faith. The joker however believes that the cosmic struggle will go on with or without him bringing him to a point where nothing matters except what he says matters and the only thing that matters to him is getting a good laugh while hes there. The two roles are interchangable it just depends who youre looking through.
This is why I love batman and joker, they demonstrate how tragedys and all the evil in the world try to bate you to do the wrong thing.
If Batman killed the Joker it would be much more easy to kill others. A murdering Batman would be the worst thing ever. He would be a monster and bring shame to his parents. He would be the most dangerous thing in the DC universe.
PoLLoLira9
How many of Batmans villains do you think deserve to die? Wouldn't it be better if they died? You can't say it wouldn't. Even if it's because of the laws in place Batman (as Bruce) could help change public opinion to vote for the death penalty. Seriously you would think Gotham would have done this already.

I literally was waiting for you to do this video. This is more than likely going to be my favorite video to date😭
I think the joke could also be that batman is crazy for thinking he could extend a hand out to the joker in the first place, as in the beam of light could never have been walked across in the first place regardless of eithers thoughts on it. The first time I watched the killing joke that's how I saw it. Rather than the jokers unwillingness to walk across.
Joker became overly emotional to the point that his whim is really what drives him.. Batman became a stoic, calmly and usually without direct anger but in fact a true dispassionate duty to take down criminals >.> It's really interesting how these two respond to emotion after that one bad day.
One more reason why the Batman Who Laughs is so goddamn terrifying: because what happens when the coin-sides amplify each other.
Amazing analysis as always

The insanity thing, wasn't it 'Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results' rather than the same result.Still, minor error aside, this is a brilliant video😁

Ik this is extremely late but I think one of the best moments is when batman and joker just laugh together at the end of the killing joke
Had to come back and watch this after the new joker movie. The psychological contrast between the two characters has been set up so nicely to be placed on the big screen by this new movie.
Been waiting for this video!
Another outstanding video!!!!
The duality. The light cannot exist without darkness. If one were to perish what fate would befall the other? One in the same. Deranged.
As a kid I never quite understood the Batman/Joker dynamic. Batman was good. Joker was bad. The hero always prevails over evil. It wasn't until I started reading comics that I realized Batman is just as conflicted as The Joker himself. I think it was Frank Miller's dark and gritty adaptation that really opened my eyes to who exactly is the man behind the mask. The cowl that stands for justice and to strike fear in the hearts and minds of criminals is also a way to mask the pain and guilt for the things that Bruce could not control in his past. The Joker on the other hand plays a deadly cat and mouse game with his victims. He cackles with delight at the suffering of others to hide his own misfortune. He's angered and frustrated at the fact that Batman carries himself as a cool and composed person knowing that he is just as much a tortured soul as himself. Batman can usually calculate what Joker's next move might be and almost always shows up on the scene to thwart his evil schemes. Because he knows how The Joker thinks. Joker usually isn't that surprised when "The Goddamn Batman" arrives. "What kept you so long Batsy?? AHA AHA AHAHAHAHAHA!!!" Whether they like it or not, they need eachother. They're the only ones who understand eachother on a much deeper level than right and wrong in the cold unforgiving streets of Gotham. Another aspect that really opened my eyes to their relationship was the song Deranged by Coheed and Cambria for the Arkham City game.
The sage has delivered another great vid. Can’t wait to see you blow up dude. You got this!
YES! i was just wondering what batman’s philosophy can be best explained AND I WAS PRAYING YOU COVERED IT I CANT WAIT TO WATCH
yeah they are two sides of the same coin. one cant live without the other. they really push this in the dark knight returns.
joker is the sane one tho.
and the joker did face his trauma. its bruce that cant.
he seems to think if i kill you then im no better than the guy who killed my parents.
but batmans sense of justice is the reason so many people die.
>"all the people ive murdered by letting you live" -batman
i like your voice btw
Nah I think you've got it halfway right. Both of them are insane, there is no _one_ who is sane. Both of them succumbed to their traumas, and live out their life accordingly to them. Also Batman doesn't have a weak will, rather it is his will to spare the Joker over and over, after all of the destruction, that allows Batman a chance to win (against Joker's philosophy), and prove that broken men can come back. Regardless of will that's pretty fucked up. Sacrificing future citizens just to save one insane man.
what is your definition of insanity?

I live for your vids man keep em coming seriously
I increasingly believe that as Batman grows older his inner struggle not to kill must be displaced by an inner struggle not to use magic. And deep down he must know that as an old man, he must succumb.
If Batman kills the Joker, He becomes "The Batman That Laughs"
If he kills he's not a Batman, he'll become a pathetic shell of what he once was.
I love it, as usual. Thank you for consistently releasing highquality content, dude
Liking and subscribing because that was dope af and affirmed all my suspicions about the joke.
Batman holds on to the past and is holding on to the only thing he has control of himself
Awesome video. But I'm not suprised. You always come through with the best content
Wouldn’t it be dope it joker was Batman’s brother?? I mean joker could be Joseph Wayne, both saw their parents die and it drove Joseph insane in the crime way and it drove Bruce insane protecting his city
Nah that’d be stupid
No, it wouldn't.
Way to on the bawl with the same coin thint, just like when they made the joker the one who killed the waynes its too specific it feels forced
I feel like if batman wanted to
he could just make the joker permenetly disabled or put him in a koma or imprison him in the batcave so he could never escape but I think a part of him hopes that the joker one day will be cured or just give up and move one ,just like he himself hopes to move on, and it kinda happend in the dark knight returns
After batman retired joket stoped escaping and lost his reason to live
And when he fools the word by pretending to be sane and kills a lot of people batman loses that hope and relise how many he killed by letting the joker live and finally decides to kill him
You should make a video on Assassination Classroom and the messages behind the lessons taught to the students. It’s an amazing show, and if you haven’t watched it then I can’t recommend it enough

I don’t count The Killing Joke as cannon for the very fact that I can’t actually see Batman ever allowing Barbara to sleep with him, but it is Another amazing example of he lengths at which Joker will go to to get after The Batman. Also, I think in The Killing Joke it is eluded to that while Joker did not actually rape her, it is also explained to the reader as it is to Batman that she wouldn’t be able to walk again, but that the damage done to her was more than just the physical damage. So, that could also be saying that maybe it wasn’t the Joker who did it, but that he let one of his goons rape her when she was unconscious.
barbara and bruce sleeping together only happened in the movie
and the batman beyond comic but thats no longer cannon
I think you might be my favorite youtuber well put together video

The best thing about batman and joker is that they don't have egos nor need them. They basically act on their philosophy/&psychology
This is why I love the story of The Batman Who Laughs. Shows just how easy it is for Batman to slip

This is the best way I have heared someone explain the relationship between the Joker and Batman. Great video!
Insanity is doing the same thing again and again, and expecting a different thing
When it comes to Joker’s idea of one bad day I’d like to think what you do after that bad day matters as well. Batman not breaking after everything Joker does is proof of that.
I think Joker knows that. That the reason he keeps going to keep making Batman go through multiple bad days until he breaks and proves that there is no difference.
2:19 Jokers moves are not radical. They are calculated and well thought out. They are unpredictable
The definition of insanity could also apply to the Joker because of him constantly trying to mentally destroy Batman
Good video Sage's Rain!
Batman is my favorite dc hero cause he even pushed to his limit manages to not turn on his morals and keep going.
