    That jigsaw is a beast. My Ryobi 18V is older, and there is no way that it would go through 30mm of hard wood, not to mention single handed. Then add in holding up a ladder, pointing a camera and balancing over a mud bath. That's some next level skills.

    Always enjoy the three of you and your videos. Next, Holly's water intrusion issue, you allude that's it's rain water from the bow area. A cover would change the look of Holly which currently is inviting. So, another possible solution might be to isolate the bow bilge from the rest of the boat with some kind of small sealed bulkhead and put a bilge pump in the lower bow area to pump out the water.

  • @dexterhawkins
    @dexterhawkins Před 28 dny +5

    At 1:22 and 1:29 when Simon cuts the beam shelf the boat springs to the right, its like the boat has "hogged" a little by loss of strength.

    • @phenogen8125
      @phenogen8125 Před 28 dny +1

      Indeed; that tension release needs to be mitigated by inserting the correct original length of beam shelf and maybe ballast sagging to compensate when afloat otherwise will build in a twist and or hog. Ideally the tension should have been retained by temporary steel bracing being fitted and maintaining all the tension prior cutting so we only see a kerf cut and no additional widening of the cut. Hoping Simon duly notes this and resolves it. (connect all removed beam shelf and measure adding kerf widths to define original tensioned length of replacement)

    You're doing an awesome job with what you started with, which was a
    rotten and rotting old boat. I thought Yaba and Tally Ho were over ambitious
    projects but on balance I think you two have had the biggest challenge. The aforementioned people, esp Yaba, took one horrified look at what they had, cried Oh Shit, and wisely I think, decided that all they had were templates for a total rebuild. Given your budget constraints that was never a practical way option for the Sarinda Project and instead you took the only option open to you which has been to make the most of what you started with, and I commend you both for your admirable fortitude and courage in your decision to commit to Sarinda. I wish you only fair winds and calm seas for the journey ahead.

    Ask Simon to build you a two legged scaffold that is just the right height for you to work comfortable on the beam shelf Gemma. I'm thinking along the lines of the tidal flat mud one legged table, One side has legs' and the outboard side has hooks that wrap over the appropriate stringer. One adjustable leg should do it but two would be better as the planes are always changing. Your poor legs must ache after hanging onto the side of the "cage" all day. :).
    What do you think?
    I'm certain the front handle can be removed from your belt sander so you can reach right up to the top of the beam shelf. Seems the handle is often stopping you short of a clean seep :)

      The boats were built with a layer of calico cloth between the two layers of planks. I can’t find any mention of the glues used, but the Sikaflex these guys are using will be resilient to movement and extremely strong

      @RobertLake-mf2qt Před 27 dny

      @@MevRB19 I agree with you if that is all there is, an end butted joint. In this case, they are using adhesive that is stronger than wood AND the joint is overlapped AND the sides of the fitted piece is also given adhesive. In overall consideration, adhesives are used where original wood had none. For what they are doing and what they intend the boat to be, their work is acceptable and appropriate.

    just a quick thought. as you cut each rotten plank, if you lay out the line with your bevel gauge/protractor, then every cut would end up the same angle, and so now you would only have to cut to length and width... less measuring and fiddling in the end...
