I thought going into this series, she was going to be this great character, but then in season 3 I just hated her. And not for the whole traitor situation. But how she treated Molly, and more so what she was saying about Ellen behind her back. Two women who put their lives on the line time and time again don’t need to take crap from someone who would do what Margo did.

@@mr.duanesharpe oh yeah. It’s no doubt Margo has certain traits to be admired. And that’s why she’s so great in season one because it feels like she’s breaking down the barriers that no one sees.
However the most insulting thing she does (at least in my eyes) is when Ellen visits JSC and she’s telling Alleata that Ellen’s here to bask in political greatness because she’s only a politician now. As if Ellen didn’t risk her life on Apollo 24, or stay alone on the moon, or continue to be a model astronaut, or step up as NASA administrator, or fight for NASA as a senator, or be the best friend the agency ever had as President. Ellen had the bravery to face her critics when she comes out. Margo defected under the guise of being exposed as a traitor. And hearing her say such crap about both a hero and her ultimate boss is just plain terrible.

Thanks Pete! Ever since I knew this was an “asteroid season”, and I guess due some recency bias from watching the Expanse, I’ve imagined that the asteroid will end up hitting Earth. Now that the season is unfolding I worry instead that the heist will overshoot and make the asteroid slam into Mars. Plot-wise it works as the overall effect will be the same in terms of the resources being literally on Mars, but it would be very dramatic and of course I imagine there would be some very substantial losses of life - which is due for some of our dear friends anyway. Would it hit Happy Valley? Or Koralev Crater? Or affect both? Or is this just too much gone too far?

If things work out the way Ed and Dev planned, then I think adult Alex would more than just think fondly of this moment. As this would be a pivotal moment that secured his future. Mars could be the next Saudi Arabia if this works out. Helios will be more than just a company, but also have the independence to be their own sovereign nation. Dev will no longer need to worry about other companies competing like he is with Helium-3 on the moon, and he won't have to bend the knee to what other nations want anymore. This will all establish the viability of sustainable life on Mars giving Alex a real future rather than just living on an outpost. The iridium would create jobs and terraforming Mars, which would make them less reliant on resources from Earth. This is why I believe adult Alex would truly appreciate and even feel proud for being apart of it. He would definitely realize the recklessness of putting a child in that situation, but he'll also understand that there was no other way. Hopefully, he lives long enough to gain the wisdom to know that. Assuming he doesn't turn into a cocky asshole like Ed did. Constantly reminding people of how he saved the future of Mars, and that everyone owes him a debt that can never be repaid. Ed and Kelly are both quite accomplished in their career, and that could definitely cast a huge shadow over Alex as he becomes an adult.
On a side note: I have to agree with Alex's grandmother about Kelly's insufficient bonding with her child. I'm glad that she is pursuing her career, but she has the same predilection as Ed when justifying her actions as a parent. I get that she's not on Mars to spend time with her son because she has a job to do, but at the very least she could call her son every day just to check in on him. Maybe she has, but we don't see it. From what we've seen of her as a mother, I highly doubt that even crossed her mind. I doubt she'll check in with Ed to see how Alex is doing. Kelly is definitely more attentive of a parent than Ed, but that isn't a very high bar to reach. I'm glad Ed has grown a bit more softer with children. He would never have stopped himself with Shane or Danny when it came to berating them for not doing what he expects. Had Ed been more understanding or attempted to learn rather than forcing those two to become something they're not. Maybe they would still be alive.
Although Danielle and Ed are butting heads, she will come around to support Dev and Ed in making Mars independent. It's in her nature to always follow her conscience when it matters. With her support, the rest of Mars will also support them. Miles could probably get Lee and the rest of the North Koreans to help knowing that if they succeed, then Mars would be a safe haven for them to defect to. And Mars would have the bartering power to bring their families over safely; otherwise, Mars may cut them off from the rest of Earth. No one would want to be on the bad side of Mars, and be left out of the financial and technological benefits. Even the cosmonauts could easily be persuaded with this much leverage.
Like how people are correlating this show to The Expanse, Mars would be a proof of concept that Earth is not the only viable planet/moon that could sustain life. The main difference is that For All Mankind does not delve to deep into science fiction, which I appreciate more than The Expanse. It would be unlikely they would find some alien fungus that leads to finding an ancient alien race that developed portal technologies. It would be more like Interstellar or Star Trek where they will focus efforts on traversing outside of their solar system. At the core of this show, it has been driven by their need to explore as far into space as they can. The drama and action is just how they paste together the logistics required to explore. It makes it entertaining to invest in the characters on the show. I can see this show creating spin-offs like Star Trek to cater to different demographics, while still sustaining their core audience with the main show. I just hope they don't run out of ideas or get to lazy with their writing like how The Walking Dead ended up.
I wonder how the show will deal with their usual format for the first episode of the season once they've gone past the point where they can rely on archived news footage. It won't be the same, and I think they may end up losing some of their audience when that happens. This would be a good reason to have a spin-off that could let those fans relive moments from the past through a different lens. Introduce new characters in the past, that may have been mentioned but never seen.

This Video has several good looks at the Discriminator box by itself and in place. Was sort of reminded of some Old "External" Hard Drives (of the late 90's/early 2000's) that were basically like a self contained cartridge/sleeve and could be easily Swapped IN/OUT of a Tower or Desktop PC. These usually had the option of a lock/key so a random person couldn't just walk off with a Drive... But it doesn't look like there are any Screws/Locks involved... Maybe a couple different alignment pins/rails that might make some noise or require a bit of force to insert/remove...
BUT if she could convincingly bring a large bag/kit/tool box and set it there she could swap it while performing "normal" repairs and/or maintenance checklist...
Even have someone else do the checklist... Walk up with Confidence plop the "Copy" on the desk and start performing the checklist... With the Kit/bag/box blocking the Original... Which she pulls and stashes as others perform the "dirty work" for her. They check it out, inspect it, probably call it into (unknowingly) Shadow OPS to verify operation and reinstall. She can keep her hands "clean", maybe run thru the check list. As long as everyone is looking at the "copy" and she isn't seen palming/hiding the old one... She can get the whole crew to confirm SHE didn't steal the "Cookie Jar"... She put it on the counter and had everyone verify everything was in place...

Either that, or she implants a sub routine directly to Ranger’s computer throwing off its readings. I can also see a staged accident scenario (ala Dani in S1) where the old discriminator gets damaged and they are happy to see a backup already on board.

One criticism I have of this season is that It's not clear to me how capturing the asteroid is going to be such a "game changer" for Earth. I mean, when they were able to stop using petroleum products in this timeline the revolutionary economic effects were easy to understand. But how is access to a bunch more minerals going to really change the economies of Earth? I'd like some more detail on that -- some look into competing theories of whether just adding more commodities can actually translate into some kind of global rise in standards of living. Or, is that really more hand-waving, and what it will really do is make a few corporations and countries richer in a very narrow way? People like Dani talk as if the asteroid is going to end hunger or something, but we've yet seen no evidence of anything like it.

Considering the enormous mass of the asteroid, they only have the technology to provide nudges. The nudges are enough to get it into a slingshot path towards Earth, or enough to slow it down so it falls into Mars orbit. But getting an object that massive back out of Mars orbit would take much more than a nudge, so if they manage to get it into orbit it's pretty much stuck there.

    • @thespacepeacock
      @thespacepeacock Před 6 měsíci

@@pacoramirez7363 hm, i'm not sure if that really holds up. considering the difference between a flyby and capture into orbit is only 5 minutes of burn time, they could just as easily push it back out by burning for 5 minutes, and it would end up on the exact same trajectory as initially planned. only issue would be the transfer windows, which as someone already said would take around 2 years to line up again. it'll be interesting to see how they secure it after its capture; maybe 5 minutes is only enough to get it into a very ellipctical orbit, and they need to convince the workers on mars to join their cause and produce more fuel to get it into a circular one? the fun part is that M-7 wont be able to react in any way, atleast initially. The only thing that can feasibly move that asteroid is Ranger, and that just expended all available fuel capturing into orbit. who knows, it could lead to a standoff between the 'pro-martian asteroid' workers and the 'pro-earth asteroid' higherups as the climax of the season

The opening felt like Breaking Bad: a chemist teacher who drives a boring car, living a boring live, doing the same thing everyday, until he deviates from his normal routine. The rest of the episode was a classic heist scenario. How Margo managed to get to the diner is a huge plothole. On Mars, I wonder where they managed to install the ghost-command center, considering the tighter security. I guess it's inside the N-Korea zone, the only place the new security force can't look. If the rebels can't swap the discriminator, then the next best solution is to ignite those engines with manual control. They stated a 20 seconds burn sends it to earth, a 25 seconds burn puts it in Mars orbit. I suppose a more than 25 seconds burn will make it crash land on Mars. I guess the end of season catastrophy will be Goldilocks falling on the site where Kelly is doing her research.

20 trillion is only the estimated value of the Iridium in the rock, it is full of other pressious metals ie gold, platinum etc, though it should be primarialy composed of iron and nickel, I think thats a point people and scriptwriters keep forgetting. Seeing comments about possibly altering the trajectory to impact mars, I doubt it, the physics of moving such a large object are not friendly, going from hyperbolic(flyby) to mars impact trajectory requires more delta V than hyperbolic to highly elliptic (aka mars capture). We are not given orbital elements of the asteroid but what we do know is this asteroid has an apoapsis (far point from the sun) near Jupiter and at some point its path comes close or crosses mars orbit, the NASA plan to me is to lower the periapsis (closest point to the sun) to a point near enough to earth that an intercept and capture become possible. As for why they can't just reverse the trajectory change, the planets are always in motion and a high elliptical orbit around mars would have a period of several days or weeks, even if they had the delta V on hand the window would be closed for 2+ years, they can't immediately turn around the asteroid and undue the course change as again, that astroid is big, easier to undock and move to the ship to other side, though hardware would likely prevent them from doing that as we saw in ep 1. With the asteroid in Mars orbit, may as well keep it there, sure they could try again but once you start mining may as well build up the martian infrastructure. Will be fun to see the crew, Mars, and Earth watch the burn timer go from 20:00 to 20:01... and see the growing panic as everyone tries to figure out what went wrong or how to override and shut down the engines. Also curious to see the other plot threads collide in the next two episodes.

Mars and Goldilocks have crossing orbits so a collision may be inevitable, they only need to perturb Goldilocks enough to get an encounter in decades instead of thousands of centuries. Given the low available delta-v and high computational requirements it should be a subtle n-body solution; I don't think changing from hyperbolic to capture in one orbit should even be on the table

is highly likely they steal the asteroid with success but the math wasnt very good so they end up overshooting and send up the asteroid directly into mars, maybe even killing the team searching for life

I hate the steal the moon plan, and Margo is a flat-out traitor

Never liked him but I hate Ed every episode more and more. Alex asking his mom if she will return gives me bad vibes for Kelly :(
And give me more Margo and Sergei please.

At this point it wouldn't shock me if they add a UFO. There running out of places to go, without turning this show into The Expanse.

Even if Dev's plan works they'll still be reliant on Earth for the equipment and resources to mine the asteroid for the decades to come. I can't imagine that will be easy once everything hits the fan

Indeed, but this way they will have something to blackmail the Earth with. Want resources? Send us what we need to mine it all, or nothing is going to happen. But yeah, the whole scenario is stupid. Realistically, if something like this happened, Earth would not fold. Even if it was impossible to send an asteroid again towards Earth, they would send a huge detachment of troops to take back Happy Valley and make sure that the new administration is Earth-friendly.
Earth has people, resources, weapons. Happy Valley has a few hundred people, no weapons other than a few handguns and no way to resupply. And they are in control of an asset worth trillions of $.
In which sensible universe Earth does not IMMEDIATELY build 10 spaceships, puts 30+ soldiers on each, and sends them to Mars to take back control? I am guessing in this universe, which is why the whole storyline is stupid.
Regardless of what happens with an asteroid (captured my Martian gravity, or crashes into the planet), Earth would respond in the same way - send in the troops to regain the control of the renegade outpost. A few hundred technicians with next to no weapons are no match for the Earth and its capability to retaliate in a situation like this.

I wonder if Ed & Dev play a sea shanty across all comms during their heist. They owe Danni one.

Don't you get Dev and Ed's point? It's about the Martian Dream!!!

I still can't get into this show. It has to do with the acting, or maybe the make up of the aged actors that is off but I can't shake the feeling that it feels off.
One thing I can't help thinking about tho, is that this seems like the perfect set up for The Expanse. There are a lot of parallels between the mega corporations trying to exploit the workers, the Helios people being the original Belters, the kid born in space who is already unable to live on earth.... This would be a good prequel.

Hi guys, iam so desapointed, sad, desespéré in french, by this season 4. C’était bien, et puis c’est devenu une série sur les problèmes sociaux, problèmes d’argent, et quasiment plus rien sur l’univers de la conquête spatiale… fin très décevante.
