  • It all started in the mid 1920's when William Randolph Hearst started building the Hearst Castle. There was and is nothing like it in America.
Every inch of the castle dripped with ornate detail -- with carved wood ceilings, fantastic and rare pieces of art, even the beds were antique, furnishings elaborate, tennis court, pools, outdoor free roaming zoo, just nothing like it. Celebrities and personalities, political, literary, etc. visited by INVITATION ONLY. The road up to the castle winds up a hill for what seems like forever. Try to imagine dining at the long "Ranch" table (Hearst referred to the Castle as his Ranch). William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies hosted all who came. The State of California has made it a state park and now you don't need an invitation. Plan a trip to the Central Coast of California, San Simeon and see for yourself.

I have visited twice, spent hours each time--I doubt I've seen 10% of this place--fascinating!

What most people don't know, he probably had around 20 mansions, so making a place like this to house his worldwide collection of "things" was kind of natural!
That and having an enormous ego. Julia Morgan, the architect, was truly amazing with what she made there!

I was there at Christmas time as gift for my family. We took all 3 tours. I felt like I was going back in time. I am sure William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies and there guests still roam the halls of this magnificent mansion My daughter was aloud to take all the pictures she wanted. Did you pick up the images of a ghost or too, you never know 😱🤔

Thank God for hard working rich people. This house was designed by Julia Morgan. She and Hearst kept hundreds of workers employed during the Great Depression. Whitemarsh Hall in Philadelphia was also a great pile that employed hundreds of Americans during the depression.

Excellent video, I was in the Army and lived in Paso Robles for a little more than a year. That was 35 years ago, I did all tours. You all did the best job, this should be a first view before you go video, if you do you will appreciate the Castle even more.

When we visited some 2 decades ago, it was HOT. Looking at that deep blue pool, I had to ask the tour guide "What would happen if I fell in?" He responded: "You would go to jail." It was so damn hot, it was tempting!

If you go plan for the whole day & expect to pay for multiple tours ( worth it). Next time we'll eat breakfast in Moro Bay, go early, pack a picnic lunch for the parking lot between tours. Sure it costs a lot to maintain. Wheelchair tours available.

I've been there. It's very pretty. The animals are gone of course in most of the gardens. It is a nice place but I don't think I would call it Paradise.

Good Video! However, instead of saying "Hearst" designed the castle and it's grounds, you should have mentioned (at least once) that it was Julia Morgan's incredible design. Hearst grew up in Europe so he knew he wanted a European castle similar to the great country estates in England, but, it was Julia Morgan who designed and created it. She will always be in history as probably the greatest female architects. When I went there, I thought the guest houses were better than the dark castle. The castle is literally like walking through an old (very dark) medieval castle with very little light shining in; as if you were in old medieval England. It's only when you go outside into the most beautiful gardens that you are reminded that you are in sunny beautiful California's Pacific Coast.

Hearst didn't grow up in Europe but traveled there extensively starting at a young age when his Mother took him on the grand tour where he learned to appreciate European architecture and antiquities!!! There is a mission style warehouse built in San Simeon along with a private pier which received items via steamer from his massive collection stored in a five story warehouse in New York.

May I interject that the Hearst family and corporation GAVE the mansion and grounds to the State of California , with just taking a very few possessions ..all the the priceless artifacts and furnishings were given to
the State for all of us to admire and learn from‼️‼️‼️💥💥 let’s give credit where credit is DUE.
