You know that feeling that something's watching you? That's likely caused by the amygdala, though science is unsure as to why it occurs when there is no percievable threat.
My theory is Miyazaki designed these Amygdalae to have eyes on the inside of their fleshy heads like that as inspired by the real amygdalae responding to threats we don't perceive so they must have "insight" into another realm or state of being, which plays along with the rest of theme of the game where "insight" is interchangeable with "in sight" or "eyes on the inside" that can see what is normally unperceivable

Something to consider is in a game where the setting has multiple realms we know are heavily based on thought and emotion that what would have been merely symbolic becomes literal. Having multiple eyes gives greater insight. Giving in to base urges makes you a beast. Things that disturb your mind cause actual damage to you. All these should have no physical component. Just a mental one. Yet men do become beasts. And when you are forced to comprehend something you are not ready for you see literal spears stab you. The line between dream and reality has been blurred and as a result what was once allegory is now hard truth.

Something else that makes my skin crawl is they’ll contort their necks to look at you. While I was in unseen village i decided to pay close attention to the Amygdalas watching me, looking at them i noticed how they won’t always track you until you’re in a field of view, like outside instead of indoors, at that point they’ll turn their heads at you even ones in uncomfortable positions. I messed with this on a specific Amygdala that was hanging upside down I think, and it would be directly looking at you, and quite literally it was breaking its neck just to track me, and I think at some point it’s head would be considered upside down, either a glitch or intentional (which would be more unsettling) since that means they can twist their heads 360 degrees in seemingly any direction, if you leave the field of view they return their heads to normal so watching this one go from a twisted head position and quickly back to its normal position made my back shiver.

No facial tentacle means less attackable parts, especially with Amygdala's design - a giant creature with its head high above the player that rarely an attack can land on its head - but with soft squeeshy tentacles dropped down it would allow the head to have a bigger hitbox thus more vulnerable to a untrained player. The other thing to mention is that obviously From can not make its legs disappear too so they just make them super strong against physical attacks, but they balanced it with a mechanism to bait the jump attack, though the idea of "legs are too strong to provide meaningful harms" would be burried in a new player's mind already. Bloodborne is chockfull of such clever designs. My absolute favorite is Rom, because throughout the entire run, the game hammers into your brain a simple idea: if you want to succeed, you have to be fast, you have to be aggressive, you have to get in there, deal as much damage as possible, and dart out.
Rom _completely obliterates that perspective._ When you first encounter her and she drops spiders at you, you're like "hm, OK, I see, so I have to be careful about the spiders that will keep spawning, just an additional layer of difficulty, I get it". And if you try to mostly ignore the spiders and focus on Rom, you will get rekt. You have to do a complete 180 on your strategy, and slowly, methodically, kill every last spider, before fighting Rom. And it's amazing, because Rom is the boss this fits the most, reaching her and bestig her requires you, the player, to have enough insight to think outside the box and change your tactics like this if need be.

However, once you play the game more and better understand Rom's attack patterns, tells, and how the spider babies operate, the best option is...hard and fast, just like always.

This made me think "what if the Amygdalas are a different form of Rom?"
I mean, they have eyes literally on the inside of an open-air skull, could they be "ascended mortals" that attained a "superior" form like Rom did, but not losing their mind in the process?
Could they be conglomerations of different "enlightened individuals", who instead of doing the next step alone like Rom, fused together to withstand the brunt of the revelation? They have multiple limbs and they seem to be linked quite strongly with knowledge, rituals and curses.
Could they be ancient loranites that chose the kinship with the great ones path, instead of becoming beastly "Hunters" of the great ones and their kin (the loran beasts use lightning, which is the bane of the kin, thus my reconstruction of them as inimical to the great ones)? Are they even older than that?

Here's my take on the Amygdala: *the* Amygdala is referred to as a false god and is also hinted to be female. It's noticeably the only distinct specimen among its kind and apparently much more hostile and intelligent. My theory is that the Amygdala are a species similar or related to the Great Ones in biology and power, but they aren't exactly the same, as they can naturally reproduce. They're matriarchal, as evidenced by their most powerful and aggressive specimen being female, and is distinguished as such by the lack of face tentacles. The matriarch would use its status as a powerful being to ensnare lesser creatures, and that's how it hunts; coercion and cultivation of a cult that would willingly grant sacrifices.
