    I found my Gameboy
    It deserves a good restoration!
In this video I will not make strange changes or inventions… I will simply take care of an object from my childhood to which I am attached…
I then begin to disassemble it with the six screws that I find on the back, see three-pointed star or also called Y
Once the screws have been removed, I separate the two halves, I'm careful because I don't know what to find and the last thing I want is to tear off some cables...
In fact, the two halves are held together by a flat cable which, with a little attention, detaches from the back. I take the front and unscrew the 10 screws, this time normal star screws, which hold the board on which the screen is located, the contacts for the buttons and the loudspeaker and contrast potentiometer are also welded. And I gently extract the card with its layer of dust. But the worst is yet to come: the worst crap lurks on the keys…
The speaker also needs a good cleaning. Now there would be the disassembly of the rear but… I didn't press the REC button…
Patience, I'll put it back together later…
All plastic and rubber parts can be cleaned with a simple kitchen degreaser and nail brush
By rinsing the whole layer of dirt has come off but the yellow of the plastic remains:
For this there is a method that I try for the first time
I discovered it by watching the channel of 8bit Guy , a computer nerd, serial accumulator of vintage computers, who not only restores them but also manages to repair them by explaining how they work… If you like vintage technology take a look, I'll leave the link in description
The method is simple: hydrogen peroxide and UV rays
I put the plastics in a tray and pour hydrogen peroxide on them, I also add a little active oxygen detergent, as recommended by someone online…
In reality, it is better to avoid detergent or at least use very little because it tends to foam, and the foam shields a part of the UV rays that must directly hit the surface
Not having a UV lamp at hand, I rely on the sun, and put the tray on the balcony for several hours.
Meanwhile, clean the boards with a spray made especially for cleaning electrical contacts and a brush for dirty jobs
The contact plates of the battery also deserve a cleaning
one in particular has traces of oxide that I try to remove with a bamboo banquet
The spring on one of the plates that holds the battery in place is bent,
with a pair of pliers I straighten it trying not to break it
Meanwhile, the hydrogen peroxide is working but not so well…
The first result is not what I hoped: the yellow has faded a bit but I think we can do better
so I try again with hydrogen peroxide at double the concentration.
Also I think a plastic bag can surround better and minimize consumption…
And the sun again for quite a few hours… And hours… And other hours…
And finally the difference can be seen, or rather it can no longer be seen: the lightest part above the writing is of the original colour, now even in the exposed part the yellow has almost disappeared.
All that remains is to put everything back together.
Let's start with the power button which simply snaps together. Four screws hold a metal plate. The motherboard must first be inserted into the power button and then lowered into place together with the soldered cables for connecting the audio jack. There are only two screws for the motherboard and two more for the audio jack board. Now it's up to the plastic and rubber keys held in place only by small plastic pins that keep them in place
Then I screw in the 10 screws holding the monitor board
And the two halves of the Gameboy snap back together again with a light push and a little click
We secure everything with the six Y screws
    I insert four batteries
I clean the glass, i.e. the transparent plastic covering the screen, and glue it with very thin double-sided adhesive
I close the battery compartment and insert the cartridge
If I did everything right it will turn back on…
    Perfect!
aesthetically it looks new, except for some light scratches on the glass and on the keys.
And also in terms of construction I found it really well designed!
And now I can enjoy a game
returning, even if only for a few minutes, to that feeling of relaxation that he was able to give me in the hard period of adolescence…
As always, your comment is very welcome, and if you liked the video, let me know with a like.
See you in the next video, and if you don't want to miss it...
