Fun fact about the Max Buster mode. It actually scales up with your power ups. So you could start with a flat 100 but end up with 200+ damage done with the buster. I even ended up just killing the Life Virus in BM1 in less than 2 seconds because the damage was so high

I see you. I hear you. I am with you. As a veteran of this series, I can honestly say the BN5 liberation missions are by FAR the most fun I have ever had in the series. BN3 is my favorite game overall, BN6 is my favorite for gameplay specifically, and BN5 gets a special ranking from me exclusively for the liberation missions. I could make a whole video essay on the topic, easily. You either like the liberation missions or you are wrong.

    • @-ZRG-
      @-ZRG-  Před rokem +2

That's really what it comes down to for me. I love BN5 and BN6 about equally, but for drastically different reasons.
Between certain virus lineups and Liberation Missions, BN5 feels like its appeal comes from trying to challenge the player to quickly improve at using its systems if you're not already familiar with them.
Whereas BN6 feels similar to a game like Kingdom Hearts II, where the sheer variety of combat options are dizzying and a blast, but the lack of difficulty means you aren't encouraged to diversify unless its for the sake of spicing things up.

I hope this doesn't come off as advertising, but I'm going to recommend something. While not a thing most of the time, Battle Network does occasionally reference the other games in the series, especially the latter half. If you want to get a feel for the story, but don't want to dive into a particular game, KNIJon has a series going over all 6 games in the series. He goes pretty in depth as well, so it's well worth a watch.

This was a very nice primer video and I'm definitely gonna be using the battlechip building tips to my advantage because I'm still a bit rusty in doing that lol. Great job with the video! Don't 100% it first for the love of God, but it's short and sets you up for any game going forward. I do definitely have a bias, I think the translation errors are really funny. @heydri9392 Před rokem +4

Excellent vid I'd say and the only thing I'd say you missed are the alternate DS versions of BN1 and 5 not included in legacy collection
Operate Shooting Star is far and away the definitive release of game 1, it has map feature, you can run with the L button like the rest of the series along with some minor crossover content with StarForce and little improvements in the dungeons that go a long way, if makes Battle Network 1 actually playable and if you just have to play it it's gotta be this version if nothing else it'll reduce the guide syndrome thanks to the map, you can easily find a fan translation for it
There's also 5 Double Team which adds quite a lot actually, it adds Sol Cross by putting a copy of Boktai in the GBA slot, compatibility with the other BN GBA games including 5 which I think is really neat, the party system is a way to play with the navis outside of liberations and makes Internet traversal easier hell they even com with a mini Navi Cust and during liberation missions the ability to switch a member for their opposite version counterpoint (swapping Numberman for Searchman for example). Unlike BN1 though 5's source port in BNLC is still a solid version to play it's just you'd be missing out on some more quality of life features

I considered giving OSS and Double Team DS their own section, but since the point of the collection(at least from my perspective) was to have all the games in one place without needing to emulate, I opted to just focus on what was in the collection.
I am kinda surprised that they didn't try to make a LC exclusive Patch Card for SolCross though, that seems like it would've been pretty simple unless I'm missing something.

A personal tip: If you're planning to Complete one of the games, meaning collecting all the stars / icons / achievements, best to not rely on Max Buster mode. It's mainly due to the chip collecting: The busting level also determines which chip code you can get. This is critical to complete the PA memo list. To get S busting level, at least a Double Delete is mandatory. You can't do that with Max Buster, so check your chips out and see how to Double Delete your targets as efficiently as possible! Like, Protoman chips!

My experience on MMBN1: Have maps on hand, upgrade as you go, forge to save so I used buster max so I don't waste time, and constantly used buster max once I got tired around the last part of the game. To compare with MMBN2, I am maybe 1/3 of the story through in the time I completed the first game and I'm still enjoying it, managing my folders and even grinding.
For MMBN4, I was about to skip even with the added card reader features until your comment. Maybe my disappointment faded enough that I can now laugh at it (except Fireman's operator, the anime justice system of that world failed us).

How do you deal with the Code part of the battle system? Because I've gotten through the Waterworks so far, and the battles (particularly the bosses) have started feeling kind of annoying because more often than not, I've only been able to use one chip per round.

Limiting the amount of Codes in your folder is the first advice that comes to mind like I'd said, but some games are better about giving a selection of chips with synergy than others, especially early on.
To my understanding, BN1 is one of the games that doesn't do a *great* job on that front, unfortunately.
Committing to buying damage upgrades for the Buster should definitely alleviate that a bit though, or even swapping to Buster Max if it feels like a boss is starting to drag on a long time. Even NumberMan had that effect on me if the footage I captured for this video was any indication.

Another reason why you should stick to Team Colonel is because Capcom was not thinking when they designed Team Protoman for the liberation missions. They may be stronger in battle (except for Meddy), but they did not design liberation missions around Magnetman, Napalmman or Meddy's abilities.

Besides some parts of the combat, double soul transformations, boktai cameo and final sequence, It does almost everything else worse in including the music.
While BN1 may not have as robust a battle system and may be a bit complicated to navigate fieldwise, It's still a far more entertaining and thrilling experience because they managed to get the pacing and atmosphere on par bettrr than 4 could.

Of the ones I played before this released, 5 was actually my favorite too. However the DS version of 5 was a pretty big improvement over the one featured in the legacy collection as it included a bunch of features that crossover the versions or further integrate the team based mechanics into regular play. Personally preferred Colonel, partially because Protoman's specific navis weren't as much fun to play.
I actually started with 4. For as much as everyone dogs on it, goofy writing aside, most of the problems with it are only really apparent if you play another game in the series. Mechanically it's a pretty sound game aside from the inexplicably randomized story, and it heavily sets up the story for the next game.
I went back and played the first one, and it's got a bad case of first installment syndrome. It's not a "bad" game, but it's by a wide margin the worst in the series. It's also the easiest since none of the enemies have more than 1000 health and nothing stops you from making a mono-coded chip folder with 10 copies of the same chip, leading you to have a folder with like 10 shockwaves or a bunch of steals and wideswords or aquaswords. It also autoheals Megaman after every fight which is something you take for granted if you move onto another game after. Part of the reason the Powerplant chapter is one of the worst in the series is because they actually take away that mechanic. I don't hate the first one. But what it lacks makes it relatively frustrating compared to every future game. The internet looks the same everywhere, there's no indication of where you are in it, there's no subchips, you got this pointless armor mechanic instead of style changes, and you need to use a chip to escape which you also need to use to trade for a different chip later on. Even the "postgame" feels relatively pointless. The postgame areas look the same as the rest of the internet aside from having purple navis, and you can access them very early on despite the "postgame bosses" not being there, and when you do fight them, they are just regular inexplicable boss battles against characters who are given no introduction. Also, aside from Wily and Higsby, none of the bad guys in this game ever show up again. Kinda sucks because the other WWW operatives had pretty cool designs.

I played BN1 and 2 recently on emulator as they were the only ones I hadn’t played growing up. I decided to replay them when the legacy collection came out and I can safely say that if you are to replay BN1, just use Buster Max mode. It makes getting through the game significantly more palatable. Buster Max mode can also be turned off at any point in time so I spent my time demolishing viruses in seconds and then turning off Buster Max mode to fight bosses since those are pretty much the only interesting parts of BN1 anyway.
Also, if it weren’t for Buster Max mode, I would also actually consider BN4 as a good starting point. People always bring up the multiple playthroughs to shit on the game (and rightfully so), but many people tend to forget… you don’t HAVE to go for 100% when playing these games. BN4 is probably one of the easier games in terms of battles, its plot is (mostly) self contained meaning you don’t have to be familiar with the story beforehand, AND it’s the shortest when doing a single playthrough, making it a great way to get a bite sized taste in what the rest of the series can be like.
But at the end of the day, I can’t help but just hope we get more Battle Network in the near future. Leg’s hope for more Battle Network!

    Spoilers in this post.
As a new(returning?) Fan, I'm putting my thoughts so far.
I played one of the games years ago. I don't recall which one. I only recall a game show and a zoo.
I've beaten 1 and am ... at least probably halfway through 2. I just beat the Plane level.
Character are fun. I haven't really disliked even any of the villians. It's bringing me back to old power rangers. The heroes are cool kids and the villians are wacky goofs. I do like the idea that Wily basically almost made the Reploids but that this world went online instead.
Level design in 1 is awful. I was so tired of the ice dungeon, and I ended up having like 4 more areas left. It was very annoying. The electric level wasn't any better, but I got through it pretty fast on luck, so it probably just didn't effect me as bad as I think it really could have. Even the basic travel around the Net can get very confusing, especially when backtracking to revisit merchants.
I'm not using walkthroughs, even if you say to. I like challenging myself to play the way the game intended.
...that being said. I did end up using the Bass download chip because I didn't realise it was that broken. Then, the gacha mechanic landed me with 2 more Bass.exe chips. And I mean that about as early as it was possible to do so. so that was my general strategy for most of the game.
Back to level design for a second. The 2nd game so far has been a lot better. I feel the major areas are more pronounced, and the other areas were simplified a little. I still find myself preferably going to a designated terminal as Lan to reduce my time in the Net though. It feels like I'm saving time not getting lost, that way.
Also, generally I am used to later games controller mechanics. For example, I have skipped a few cutscenes already because I tried to "pause" the scene if I am called away, out of habit with games like Skyrim. Not really the games fault, but that's been a part of my experience.
All in all though, it's been a blast. I haven't found anything that's really made me regret playing yet, except maybe that ice level. I'd still very much recommend this collection.

So don't over think much about it. So I started with 2 and did 3. And not only do I think that 3's story is highly overrated (it has some good stuff but lacks any compelling throughline to drive the plot for the first 3/4 of the story other than vague references of WWW being back which Lan freaks about for a second and then shrugs and forgets it), but I think *2* has the best story in the series. Gospel feels like a legitimate threat that is both dangerous and always one step ahead of you. It's the darkest and has many memorable moments. The castle dungeon scenario was genuinely upsetting, for instance. 2's narrative is only let down by the villain, sadly.
