A little clarification on South Africa: the violence and looting occurred in two of our nine provinces, Gauteng and Kwa Zulu Natal. It was terrible in those areas but the other provinces are relatively peaceful and are able to provide assistance to the affected places. Many people in the affected areas, and other provinces, have been amazing, pitching in to clean up the mess and provide support to the victims. A clear signal has been sent that the vast majority of South Africans care, and do not support the violence and looting .

The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential. This means that the person involved should have legal capacity to give consent; should be so situated as to be able to exercise free power of choice, without the intervention of any element of force, fraud, deceit, duress, overreaching, or other ulterior form of constraint or coercion; and should have sufficient knowledge and comprehension of the elements of the subject matter involved as to enable him to make an understanding and enlightened decision.
This latter element requires that before the acceptance of an affirmative decision by the experimental subject there should be made known to him the nature, duration, and purpose of the experiment; the method and means by which it is to be conducted; all inconveniences and hazards reasonably to be expected; and the effects upon his health or person which may possibly come from his participation in the experiment.
The duty and responsibility for ascertaining the quality of the consent rests upon each individual who initiates, directs, or engages in the experiment. It is a personal duty and responsibility which may not be delegated to another with impunity.
The experiment should be such as to yield fruitful results for the good of society, unprocurable by other methods or means of study, and not random and unnecessary in nature.
The experiment should be so designed and based on the results of animal experimentation and a knowledge of the natural history of the disease or other problem under study that the anticipated results justify the performance of the experiment.
The experiment should be so conducted as to avoid all unnecessary physical and mental suffering and injury.
No experiment should be conducted where there is an a priori reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur; except, perhaps, in those experiments where the experimental physicians also serve as subjects.
The degree of risk to be taken should never exceed that determined by the humanitarian importance of the problem to be solved by the experiment.
Proper preparations should be made and adequate facilities provided to protect the experimental subject against even remote possibilities of injury, disability or death.
The experiment should be conducted only by scientifically qualified persons. The highest degree of skill and care should be required through all stages of the experiment of those who conduct or engage in the experiment.
During the course of the experiment the human subject should be at liberty to bring the experiment to an end if he has reached the physical or mental state where continuation of the experiment seems to him to be impossible.
During the course of the experiment the scientist in charge must be prepared to terminate the experiment at any stage, if he has probable cause to believe, in the exercise of the good faith, superior skill and careful judgment required of him, that a continuation of the experiment is likely to result in injury, disability, or death to the experimental subject.

    Hi, I’m George from Taiwan.
Thank you, Jessica, for sharing this information. Well done.
Taiwan has been able to keep the number low because most Taiwanese wear masks, wash their hands, either with water and soap or 75% alcohol, and practice Social Distancing. But, after zero infected case for a period of time, some people started to relax and forgot about the Virus. They stopped wearing masks, washing their hands and practicing Social Distancing. When the May Outbreak came, Taiwanese people woke up and restarted all 3, plus staying at home. This was how Taiwan managed to get the numbers down (again).
I fear for Singapore, for the UK and for the United States of America because I fear that the vaccines will let people’s guard down. To me, the vaccines are not the Cure. They are more like a see-through mask people don’t have to wear, which is still currently under their Phase 3 clinical trails.
Mask alone cannot beat the virus. It takes a lot more than that. And Taiwan has proven that. It takes a lot of resources to trace the origin of infected individuals before we can successfully block any further spread.
Alpha variant really hurt Taiwan’s local economy the past 2 months. Imagine what the new Alpha Plus or Super Alpha, which the UK is helping to producing with its recent opening, could do to the world. Next to China, the United Kingdom could be the next country blamed for its irresponsibility and ill thought-out actions during this Pandemic.
Wear Masks, Wash Your Hands and Staying Away from the Virus are the only way for individuals to survive this Pandemic.
    Stay Safe Everyone !

I agree 100%. I'm lucky enough to be married to a Taiwanese lady - we have a 10 year old daughter together. During my first visit to Taiwan 10 years ago, I was impressed by just how friendly and open Taiwanese people are. I was fully made to feel at home and everybody bent over backwards to give us the best experience one could hope for, for the entire 4 week stay.
It was only around this point that I started educating myself on the differences between Taiwanese and Chinese. Everything I already knew from having been a Wwoof, Helpx and Couchsurfer host for 8 years really came to mind. The overall personality/disposition of the 2 are at complete opposites of the scale in most cases.
China's president is well on the way to becoming the most hated man on earth. The fact that most Chinese citizens agree with his policies and cannot easily listen to criticism puts all Chinese in a pretty bad light for the rest of the global population. It's a shame that there will be a lot of people who will be unfairly tarred with the same brush as the bad ones, but how on earth can we know better?
If China starts killing innocent Taiwanese, the people who support them deserve everything they will get when Karma rolls into town.
I have no pity for them.

@@Lp78Ch I have mixed feelings on this, but don't dispute this is a real concern. With Taiwan considered in isolation I could begin to agree with what you say, but given how terrible the rest of the world has dealt with this, and the realities regards how the Taiwanese economy needs to interface with them, I am not sure what the best answer is.
I don't think there is enough data to make an accurate call on this right now, and it seems to be more that Taiwan has done so well in preventing COVID deaths clouding the issue. Of course it's terrible anyone is dying from vaccines side effects, and that anyone could be inevitably lost by being reduced to a statistic in an attempt for the best decision for the long term greater good.
The right decision will probably only be known in hindsight.

Jessica and Barbara! First , Jessica - thank you for the update on Taiwan. When the pandemic first started , I began telling folks about Taiwan. Anyone who would listen , not only how well they were doing , but how they did. I saw one of Taiwan's officials , on you-tube , describing exactly what actions they took. I thought it should have been a model used for the entire planet. Yes they had lockdowns , but they provided their citizens with food , $$$ , masks , places to get tested , medical cards , it was absolutely done right. Also , Jessica , your reporting today was top notch , very nicely done!
    Now on to Barbara
Barbara - I have been following the situation in SA. Your presentation today reminded me of all the images I had seen. I could feel the pain and anguish in you voice. I have a neighbor who is from SA. She told she has a relative that went over to visit , and has been unable to get out , for over a year. I saw an interview with 2 young men , whom , in my mind , did not appear to have any type of criminal nature , showing on their face , however they both admitted to stealing , they both did not appear to be proud to have done so , and only did so because they knew that after all this chaos , there would nothing left , so they took some food. My heart nearly broke listening to the these two young men. There was a young reporter , who had much fear in her eyes , as she was trying to report and also look out for the well being of herself and her cameraman.
So thanks again Barbara , for bringing us and the world this news , we all know it's not easy , and we are grateful for your courage.

Taiwan is the perfect example of the coordinated hit it hard and fast approach that works!
In Australia we have one state (NSW) that has taken a "suck it and see" approach which has allowed the Delta variant out in that state.
Lack of lockdown has let it spread into Victoria and now South Australia.
I'm in SA and we are now in a 7 day lockdown with 5 confirmed cases which are expected to increase before it gets better.
It boils my blood that NSW has taken a touchy feely approach that has put the rest of the nation at risk!

This would have included telling about Taiwan's strict isolation measures for infected persons, while at large leaving most of their country and the economy open.

Taiwan puts a far larger % of GDP into health care compared to many nations. There is an interview with their chief medical leader who said they get an outbreak from China every 2-3 years so are well practised in mask wearing and testing. Certainly did a great job.

Thank you for broadcasting, and in particular for bringing on and interviewing the two contacts speaking from Taiwan and South Africa where things are anything but stable. It is one thing to hear “the news”, filtered and limited in U. S., and then another to listen to individuals who have until now not even been able to register for their first dose of protective vaccines. Today I join many others around the globe sending hope for all living in less than safe and even dangerous situations.

Taiwan government and people are great. in my country, covid has caused the economy to slump, many people are desperate, so many people think "if I die, it's okay, rather than living but suffering" so they choose to be "free" rather than obeying the covid protocol. people are starting to be reluctant to follow the covid protocol for business because there are business debts that must be paid, employee salaries must still be paid, loss of rent for business premises. Some people are starting to show an anti-government attitude so that handling Covid is increasingly difficult.
