  • In its early hardcore punk days, the Beastie Boys were a quartet. Drummer Kate Schellenbach was forced out of the group as the Beastie Boys embraced hip hop.
"We started to become these dudes that were gross. I don't know how else to say it," Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz told the PBS NewsHour's Jeffrey Brown. "And we kicked Kate out of the band because she didn't fit in with this new 'dude' thing we were doing."
The Beastie Boys did eventually apologize to Schellenbach, something they recalled in last year's "Beastie Boys Book." In that same book, Schellenbach penned a chapter detailing her former band members' "meathead mind-set" and how "seeing them flourishing in this environment was hard to swallow."
