That's one of the things that pissed me off in 3 when Amanda was acting the way she was acting towards Lynn. They made her act all super clingy and weird when she was around John. She acted like a jealous ex-lover or girlfriend. That whole thing was just weird and gross. I could understand the Stockholm Syndrome thing but I still find it odd that she was acting like she was in love with John or something.

If anything, Saw 3 showed Amanda displaying signs of a disorganized attachment system. X plays into that more with her seeking a father figure in John. The jealous girlfriend syndrome being applied is so insulting for Amanda’s character. People took a woman with an abusive childhood and turned her into a stereotypical depiction of a character whose only purpose is to be in love with a man. There is more to her character and I’m glad there’s people out there that understand that.

Fingers crossed for a directors / Final Cut. The version we have seen was amazing but some (not all) of the deleted scenes would elevate things so much. John addressing the room, the scenes you spoke about and John even just him smiling at the play park likely thinking who Gideon could have been, so good.

I just rewatch the first 7 films and watch the Last 3 films over the weekend and I was thinking the same thing.
If it wasn't for Detective Eric Matthews
    1. Amanda would have never gone to jail for false drug charges
    2. She would have never got addicted to Heroin in prison
    3. She probably would have never met Cecil and joined him in Robbing Jill Tuck. Causing her miscarriage.
Chances are, Cecil might have caused the miscarriage anyway, if that's true, then Amanda being connected with him allowed Mark Hoffman to threatened her into fail her test by killing Lynn Denlon. Therefore causing Jeff to kill both Amanda and John.
If by chance that Cecil never caused the miscarriage, them the Jigsaw Killer would never come into existence

I always questioned, what made Amanda so cold the way she is in part 3. After watching Saw X I noticed she was sincere when it came to Gabriella. Again, this is my opinion but she knew John suggested Gabriella went and she left her for last. She was devastated when Cecilia murdered Gabriella if anything, we’ve never seen Amanda show this emotion towards anyone. But in Saw 3 she’s more vein, selfish, and cold as she seems to have gone through more but we weren’t shown that. Maybe in Saw XI it is assessed.

    • @Dressup_Doll
      @Dressup_Doll Před 6 měsíci +7

My guess would be that since X is between 1 and 2, Cecilia snapping Gabriella’s neck despite her winning the game, being thrown into the needle pit despite it being Xavier’s trap, having to betray Daniel even though they opened up to each other, Eric Matthews escaping from his trap, Hoffman blackmailing her with the information she knew couldn’t get out, and her mental state spiraling downward after everything, she no longer cared about anyone aside from John and maybe herself.
She grew to view humanity as worthless and decided to make her traps important to win because she didn’t think anyone deserved it.
_Saw X_ is the start of her mind going from fractured to shattered, and nothing and no one helped it. Everything added up until she could no longer take it.

Okay,,,, it's always been pretty obvious Amanda views John as a father figure. In Saw 2 she literally refers to him as her dad. Her backstory mentions she had an abusive father growing up, so i think it makes sense she gets attached to him like that. I really don't think this rewrites anything. Saw 3 is pretty easily explained as she was really the only one that was consistently there and caring for John, and now someone else is taking over that role and doing what she couldn't. Also worth keeping in mind that originally in Saw 3, Lawrence was supposed to he the doctor. She also displays the same anger and competition towards the other disciples, like her threatening Hoffman with a wrench. She's posessive, yes, but definitely not in a romantic way. I never read her interactions with Jill as jealousy, from memory they only interacted once and it seemed more like she was smug. Jill thought she was a lost cause, and there Amanda was, proving her wrong.
Amanda has to be one of the most tragic characters in the franchise. She was 20 when Jill miscarried and she'd already been in prison for drug charges. The only person that ever saw anything in her was constantly trapping her and forcing her to prove herself.

  • @Dressup_Doll

    1. AO3 tag searches aside, it’s really difficult to imagine Amanda romantically loving John. Part of its due to them reminding me a crimelord father, adopted daughter duo that it extremely similar to these two. Also, I just love the idea of John tormenting Amanda and Hoffman with all his unused dad jokes.
    2. Amanda being a programmer/hacker is even funnier if you’re like me and decide that John is just bad with technology and thought she was hacking or something.
    3. The words “IT professional” made me think of a horror game with a Saw-esque character and section, and I hate my mind for that.
    4. The idea of Amanda and Hoffman road-tripping/flying to Mexico together is underused and perfectly unhinged for some fanfiction.
    5. The directors and writers really said, “Give her the most tragic backstory out of the three. It’s not that important.”
    6. I hate that my mind makes me obsess over specific characters despite never wanting to watch these movies.

I have absolutely no idea why Kevin Greutert didn't release an unrated director's cut of this movie. Every Saw movie has an unrated cut, except the ones after Saw 3D. Saw X is placed within the OG series, so why not. Plus there is 40 minutes of deleted scenes that were actually very important to the story, this movie deserves a director's cut more than any movie in the series.

Yall left out an important piece of the timeline… how John became who he is in the first place, before Amanda knew who Jigsaw or John was, before she know who Jill was, she was a drug addict after prison before she was put in the reverse bear trap, she was running with Cecil and tried to get prescribed drugs at Jill’s clinic the night Gideon was accidentally killed. Even tho Cecil caused the physical damage to John and Jill’s son Gideon, Amanda was the one indirectly responsible, Hoffman was somewhere watching but that was before HE knew who they were. So how HE knew that’s a question but he’s a detective so he probably have files on files of people. Saw VI, cuz he blackmailed her into failing her test to keep Lynn alive, so John wouldn’t know the truth. Cuz I think John told her what happened to his son and ever since then she kept that locked in her head and guilty, and of course she didn’t wanna lose everything she felt she finally had with John, plus, she didn’t want him to be furious with her about what really happened that night. What and why they were doing at that clinic late at night. Cuz Cecil was the very first test subject to John for physically killing Gideon in the first place so John had no knowledge on Amanda’s involvement cuz Hoffman already loathe her, he could have told John about that night anytime but instead he used that as bait for Amanda to choose, die with the secret she holds on that night, or live with John knowing the truth about what really happened to his unborn son than he already knows.
I was shocked over the fact Hoffman uses that accidental murder against her as blackmail. That’s why Amanda & Hoffman has their strong suits and weaknesses.
Amanda is extremely intelligent with tech, but her huge weakness is emotion. Hoffman shows no emotion and is intelligent as well with cop/detective work and planning, however his weakness is based off his sloppy but careless actions that would later catch up with him and we see that with his first ever pendulum trap. Since he used a different blade than John “Jigsaw” has when cutting out puzzle piece of Seth’s skin. And his other weakness, feeling like he has completely sense of power over everything so he will overlook morals and teachings John have taught them and Hoffman would get carried away and would stop at nothing until the job is done. Basically I’m trying to say even tho that’s Hoffman’s only weakness in my pov, he’s unstable when it comes to power. Amanda doesn’t care because she’s all about who deserves to live or die based on the actions of others, which John told both of them EVERYONE deserves a chance. Hoffman was killin just to be killing. My brain just went dead so y’all enlighten me. If I’m wrong. This may be unrelated but they missed that part of the timeline between her getting out of prison thanks to Matthews, and her winding up in a reverse bear trap in Saw 1.

I would also mention that, given Amanda’s background now, she wasn’t really given a true choice until she was put into the reverse bear trap. So, that’s going to have an even larger effect on her later in the franchise. Take that, and combine it with the interactions with Cecilia & Hoffman, and that would significantly increase her reasoning for rigging the traps (although Hoffman was rigging traps, I dont think it was fully clarified that Amanada DIDNT rig anything later on).

I really enjoy this spin on Amanda's biography, seeing her deal with her trauma and also bonding with John. As annoying as the whole jealous gf syndrome is as a trope especially for female characters, I kinda like the ambiguity of John and Amanda's relationship. Stockholm syndrome and its validity is a whole other can if worms of course, but Amanda seeing John as a father figure and an object of desire does make sense if she has been a victim of her father, blurring the line between normal parent-child relationship and something more sinister.

I have a nitpick and I'm not proud to even mentioning it but when John Kramer told Amanda that everybody deserves a chance in that John Kramer never would lie to Amanda as he mentions in Saw X but if you go back and watch the first Saw movie there's a part that contradicts a certain Chemistry Between the two because in saw jigsaw told Amanda to look around and he mentioned that her cellmate who had the key was dead and the part that gets me is when jigsaw says take a look around Amanda know that I'm not lying when mentioning about her dead cellmate who had the key but was not dead and that makes it more intriguing in terms of the relationship between John Kramer and Amanda but it also contradicts the previous movies when Amanda became John Kramer's Apprentice

Ik a lot of people have said so already, but I also don't see Amanda being romantically interested in John.
Knowing from experience what it's like to be in a bad place mentally and desperately attach to a person that will listen and seems to understand, it can appear like romantic love to others fs (had that conversation so many times) bc it's unusual (and unhealthy) to be so dependent. People just default to "romance" because that's supposed to be the deeper connection so it's more acceptable that way but you can absolutely attach to someone non-romantically, and still be jealous of their romantic partner bc guess what, people are expected to care more deeply and exclusively about that sort of partner, so obv it's a threat if your mental stability depends on the other person.
Not defending Amanda's actions in Saw 3 obv just explaining why I think the romantic angle is not really provable with the depth of her attachment since she's so deeply unwell, all we can say is that she's very dependently attached to John and she needs therapy

I'd always considered that maybe Hoffman rigged Kerry's trap and the others.
He probably felt Kerry was getting too close and wanted her dead. In Saw VI it's stated that someone bigger than Amanda would have had to put Kerry up in her trap - so we also know he was there when she was placed in it. I always thought maybe Hoffman was the one who placed her in the trap and rigged it and then Amanda came after to watch it play out. Also in Saw VI we see Hoffman keeps "toying" with traps and Amanda keeps calling him out on it.
What if Amanda never really rigged a trap? With Adam I always felt it was more of a guilt trip than wanting to kill someone, she never did kill Eric and her shooting Lynn was blackmail from Hoffman's letter. It would be interesting to find out that not only did Hoffman blackmail her with the knowledge of Jill's miscarriage, but that he set her up to look like she made Kerry's trap unwinnable so John would doubt her and have to test her again.

    • @majesdane
      @majesdane Před 7 měsíci

But Amanda herself admits in Saw 3 that she killed Eric (“That’s right, I’m a murderer. He took my life from me, so I just returned the fucking favor”). And she never denies rigging her traps. Her whole rant to John at the end of Saw 3 is that he’s basically just torturing people and only giving them the tiniest chance to survive and that he’s not actually fixing anyone.
It makes sense for Amanda to rig traps because she grows disillusioned when she realizes that winning the RBT game wasn’t enough to “fix” her (she still struggles from mental illness). And then she sees how Eric acts when he escapes his trap. Even if you strip away everything else except Saw 1-3, it’s a perfect narrative arc from being a true believer to hopeless disillusionment.

She is definitelly in love with John and also considers him her mentor. He IS her father figure, that's why her feelings are so wrong to both us and herself. That was obvious since III but having a scene showing she is the one pushing him explains why she's so desperate in III + why she's jealous of every woman : they have more power to save John than her (Lynn has the surgical skills to help him heal, and Jill has her love to redeem him if he wanted to). At the end she's feeling like a toy (proven right by John himself and his game for her) and with Hoffmann little push she can do nothing but snap. TBF I understand her so much, and it would've been great to have someone around to slap the shit out of her to put her head in the game. Poor thing, she was so far off she had no chance to win lmao

I loved Saw X but one thing that bothered me. It’s supposed to be between Saw 1 and 2 but Amanda obviously looks 20 years older but still dressed like someone in her early 20s. It looked absolutely ridiculous. They were able to make John look IDENTICAL to the way he looked 20 years ago, why didn’t they do the same for Amanda? Instead of giving us Steve Buschemi in the “how do you do, fellow kids?” meme.

The editors said they chose to not de-age either of them. They didn’t do anything to make John look younger either. They said the scenes the two shared would lose the intense emotions the two actors brought if they digitally messed with their faces.

@@JwsteeleMusic that's not what I did read officially on Twitter, they said that they didn't de-age them because it would cost a lot of money to use that technology, so instead they used light tricks and make up to make Amanda look younger, to try... because it didn't work lol to John they wouldn't need to do anything, he didn't change that much since we last seen him in the franchise

3 and 6 truly ruined Amanda's character for me for a long time. 3 made me dislike her due to how she was acting the whole time. Amanda acted like a jealous and clingy ex-lover or girlfriend to John, which in of itself was fucking weird and gross. Not to mention, I didn't the fact that she killed Kerry, one of my favorite characters as well. 6 truly made me feel nothing but hatred and contempt for Amanda once I found out that she's one of the reasons why all of this stuff started to happen in the first place. Every time I saw her on screen, I get sick to my stomach. But with X, it kind of made me starting to almost like or should I say... tolerate Amanda again. It showed some humanity within her. With Gabriela, she reminded Amanda that she was just like her and just like her, she was a lost and misguided person.
When I saw the deleted scenes, it kind of added a bit more context. Such as about her father. I remember there was a deleted scene in 3 in which Amanda mentioned that her father used to lock her up in the dark for hours. In X, it got worse when she said that he was a pedo. I'm like: "That might explain EVERYTHING!" I still don't fully forgive Amanda for what she did to Kerry though.

Honestly I’m okay with this being deleted because it’s so jarring going from this to saw2 to saw 3. We need Amanda to have some sort of break in her mental cuz she’s still too passive in this movie and saw 2 for what she’s like in saw 3

well we don't know exactly what her charge was right? i always assumed she was a drug addict at that time but just falsely charged. like he could have had her charged for drug trafficking when she was actually just in possession of them. i don't think the false charge equates to being clean of drugs; because surely she wouldn't have been on Eric's radar at all if she was a totally normal civilian??

The original version of Saw X (2023) was 2 hours and 35 minutes long. That would’ve been interesting to see an over 2 hour long Saw movie?
Does Amanda suffer from Stockholm Syndrome or does she have borderline personality disorder?

THINGS THAT MAKE U SAY Hmm about the character Amanda!!! James Wan & Leigh Whannell leaving Saw Franchise ruin Amanda farther character development fate . Saw 1-3 , Amanda is written like sole main Jigsaw apprentice.Saw 4-7 Hoffman is written like main Jigsaw apprentice and Amanda sideline. Saw X tried to put Amanda back in the role but Hoffman appearance ruin her fate again . Like it or not, Saw Franchise NOW is Hoffman not Amanda. To FIX that problem, I would move actress Shawnee Smith into Spiral book of Saw Universe. Shawnee can play Amanda in flashback and twin sister Emma in Spiral 2 . We will be able to go more into Amanda life. Amanda was hacker/ programmer and teenage mom . Cop Zeke and Daniel Mathews will be chasing jigsaw copycat William and they happen to find out Amanda Young is William mom raise by his aunt Emma. Amanda Young needs her own Saw Franchise .

Hoffmans the best, the ironic nature of his kills. Jill tuck, johns wife killed his own divice. The coroner who told hoffman he identified the inferior scalpel. And hoffman show up in a body bag and cuts his throat. Hoffmans knife seen alot of miles. But the candle on my saw cake.. is hoffman vs agent stram. That whole cat mouse thing was awsome.
    The dual glass box traps.
    I gota ask tho.

I genuinely wonder now: did John know Amanda was wrongfully charged in her first game? What if he first tested her off of the wrongful conviction without knowing the truth? What if this entire time Amanda was a victim of people exerting some sort of control over her-her father, Eric, then ultimately John. And they she takes that same obsession with control and applies it to the rigged games since she assumed that's what she was lacking: control.
ALSO! I now see Amanda as someone that's in over her head and not this vengeful angel of death type character who wanted to go after Cecelia in a potential Saw 11. I am very curious to see what gets Amanda over the line from Saw X to her ultimate fate and heel turn (do dastardly villains get a special type of heel turn when their motives change?) in Saw 3. Does Cecelia factor in? Do more dots get connected?
