When Elvis first came on the national scene, 1956, there was sooooo much controversy about his affect on juvenile delinquency, as well as NOT recognizing this 'new' music, that he got snubbed for a long time, especially during his hottest period. The Beatles, and later groups did not have this issue, and they had a larger record-buying audience to get more instant hits. Elvis paved the way for sure.

The Miracles should've won a Grammy for "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" or "The Tracks of My Tears" and Smokey Robisnon & the Miracles should've won one for "The Tears of a Clown". To be honest I found Smokey's solo albums beautiful, but a little too MOR for my taste although I bought "Being With You", "Cruisin'", and the Quiet Storm album.
That's why no one puts much stock into what the Grammys think.

The Grammy’s have very rarely captured the cutting edge of music. Smokey and his peers at MoTown and down in Memphis at Stax were on the cutting edge of Soul and music in the ‘60s. That paved the way for Stevie to win Album of the Year three straight albums in the ‘70s. Grammys are institutional more than Avant Garde.
Stevie had hits in the 60's as well that helped pave the way himself in the 70's.
Actually Elvis won three Grammys for gospel music. Just correcting the numbers but it is an interesting and ironic fact that the king of rock and roll won in a gospel category.

Being the creative force behind Motown, Smokey helped to lay the foundations for a new generation that was trying to find its place in a society that was determined to keep black Americans as 2nd class citizens, poor whites and blacks as tools to use in an unjust war in Vietnam and to suppress a growing number of socially conscious youth who no longer accepted the status quo. For Black Americans Motown represented black excellence and an image that flew in the face of the ususl stereotypes that Mainstream white Conservative America enjoyed Promoting for years. And Motown was THE ONLY musical powerhouse along with James Brown that withstood The impact of The Beatles and the British invasion. Elvis Presley was a washed up cover artist doing cheesey, incredibly stupid movies with absurdly bad soundtracks. The Beatles, Stones, Cream, The Who etc....and Motown made Presley irrelevant for the entire 60s era. Presley being only a performer and cover artist was old news and no one but his hard-core largely Whyte audience cared about what he was doing with the soulless vapid nonsense he was putting out. He had a very brief resurgence in the 70s but Soul, Funk, Hardrock and Disco quickly put him back at the bottom of the ladder. Meanwhile Smokey Robinson and Motown were churning out hits that a new generation could relate to and as the 70s approached Motown artists evolved as well as Rock Acts. Smokey wrote songs for an entire generation and those songs helped bring people together from ALL back grounds,unlike Presley who was stale, repetitive, non creative and played mostly for Whyte audiences. Smokey Robinson is in all honesty one of Americas most prominent poets and equally as important as Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell. ARTISTS who create their OWN works, composing, writing and signing it, are the REAL Musicians and game changers. Elvis Presleys name should never be mentioned in the same sentence with Smokey Robinson.

Elvis presley was not an artist. He was a performer. I can understand why he had so little grammy awards. He did not write nor compose his own work. He basically was a cover artist. Out of 700 songs in his catalog, over 500 are covers. His entire first album was all covers of other people's works.
Smokey Robinson on the other hand was the very definition of an ARTIST. The man wrote, composed and sung his own songs and wrote over 70 percent of the hits for other acts that came out of Motown. Smokey is responsible for putting Motown on the map thanks to his song writing. And to be frank because of that Motown/ Smokey became the back drop to the lives of MILLIONS of Americans black and white and everyone in between during the 60s and 70s. The man is a legitimate AMERICAN TREASURE right along with Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan.....thanks to his body of work. Smokey is American as baseball ⚾️ as far as I'm concerned and it is an inexcusable crime that this man has only one grammy to his credit. It is simply WRONG on so many levels which is why I can't take the Grammys seriously nor Rolling Stone magazine.
