I don't have any signet ring in my family, but my Grandfather was a pretty famous jeweler in Naples, Italy. So, today I have some of his creations that come directly from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They are unique rings (and other jewels) completely hand made and the most beautiful one is a lion's head that comes out from the front of the ring, it's like a real sculpture from gold. It's not a signet ring but it's still a unique and distinctive way to define yourself, even because that's the only existing ring made in that way. Hi TGV, I tought I would share with the viewers what my borthers and I did.My mother wanted to melt my late father's wedding ring down and get it made into a ring for each of us 3 brothers. I thought this was a great idea and wanted to take it a step further.On the first ring (oldest brother) the first letter from my father name was engraved on the front and his date of birth on the inside. So it was N, and 25/05/xxOn the second ring (middle brother), my father's middle name initial was engraved and his date of marriage. So A, and 12/12/xx.On my ring (youngest) is the initial of our surname and his date of passing. So H, and 07/10/XX.These three rings create a set: NAH, 25/05/xx - 12/12/xx - 07/10/xx...and are a great tribute to our father. I hope this gives some viewers another way to start a legacy ring.
I actually, I think it is a terrible idea. One of you should have kept it exactly as you father had it. The other two brothers should have got something else from your father.

I made a sterling silver ring with lost wax casting method, with my mother's initials. I made it at age 13, for my middle finger at that time. I saw your video, went and found the ring, and 15 years later, it slid onto my right pinky perfectly.
I recently had a pinky signet ring made by the same company as yourself using a monogram of my initials with some beautiful filagree surrounding them and my DOB in Roman numerals on the inside shank to celebrate my Fortieth and am in love, the quality of engraving fascinates me, it's a little masterpiece.

I've got all the rings my Grandfather left for me (RIP). I am his only Grand Sun. Guyanese, but he did spend time in England, so a lot of the pieces I own are Guyanese or UK inspired pieces. Onyx, Garnet & others. I had a few of his Masonic rings as well. I've put those into safe keeping. I actually picked up a Tigers eye signet ring today. Very interesting! I did some checking; the ring which has been passed down through the generations in our family has three oval shaped stones. Two rubies and a "blood stone" in the middle. It is set in 18kt yellow gold. To me, a bit imposing in appearance. I will have to do some more research. Your video has sparked my need to know! Great piece; as always TGV!

I am in the process of making my own signet ring w/ Alexandrite. I got the stone already cut & it's not lab created so it was very expensive. Alexandrite is one of the most expensive stones out there plus it's my daughter's birthstone along with w/ mine. It is going to be set in 14K white gold w/ a nautical star surrounding the stone. I'm very excited to get this ring so I can pass it down when It's my time to go. Thank you for your positive videos & education.

Very good video. Recently I have embarked on discovering my own genealogy. I was amazed to find that I am a direct descendant from the house of Plantagenet. I was more amazed that most all of my family knew and just elected never to bring it up. I intend to have an Oxford style signet ring made to reflect these findings. If at the very least to own as a remembrance.

My sweetheart had just brought this up the other day and like you he comes from aristocracy (but born and brought up in London) but they have no coat of arms or crest as his father is from Sri Lanka and the practise just don't exist over there as its very much a European thing...I even have one because of my Spanish side but he said he really wanted to create one so it can be passed down generations and then I came across your video and told him to watch. Good post, sir. I bought a class ring after completing University and it was in a drawer for years. It's only after 15 years that I have taken it out and worn it with pride of my accomplishment and my alma mater. It is an Oxford style and fits well on my right ring finger, opposite my wedding ring. However am considering getting a smaller classier signet that symbolizes both family and education made for my pinky to be worn on the left pinky (in honour of tradition).

Subscribed. This is a great info vid. I also will inherit my grandfathers signet ring from my dad. This will go to my eldest boy, but my youngest will inherit my husbands signet and his wedding ring which has a 1crt diamond in a flush mount. I still think I will buy them their own when they turn 18.

A signet ring isn't something I had considered before. Yet I like the idea of it being an heirloom, much like the secondary reason I've started collecting watches. I particularly like the idea of having a family crest. Hmmm, I'm going to give this some more thought. :)
Great Video! Very fascinating family history you conveyed. I am interested in these books you have shared with us. My interest particularly on heraldry and it's various meaning. My surname lineage takes me as far as late 16 century Somerset. So far no signs of armorial bearings or other heraldic symbols. Unfortunately, due to the bombing in WW2 many historical documents had been destroyed during the air raids. Nevertheless, the wax seal is classy and still has it's practical use. Great explanation of the signet ring, I m curious if you would recommend 9ct , 14ct or 18ct for my first signet ring? Or.. should I ask, you happy with your 9ct ring or you rather had it in 14 or 18?
The 9k gold looks more rosish on camera. I'm not sure if it's because they add copper or brass to heighten the red in the gold to offset the whiteness from platinum and silver, or if gold just looks more red when combined with whiter metals. I love the rings though. The Oxford style is sleek and classy. Of your grandfather's I love the traditional one with the stone. I actually inherited a signet ring from my uncle who never married, he had nothing engraved on it and it's way too big for me (he had it made to get over his arthritic fingers when he got sick). But now I know what it is. Awesome video, very informative :)

Not to flog a dead thread, but Dexter rings in the UK also have a fine product. They did my signet ring in sterling silver, the engraving was expertly done, and thier customer service was fantastic. I highly recommend them.

In Switzerland, every family (noble or not) has a coat of arms and every adult and able bodied man can wear the familys emblem. This is due to swiss long mercenary history and is made so swiss mercenaries can identify themselves when fighting for opposing armies. This includes (in the middle ages) shield, tabard, bannier and the signet ring (usually on the right ring finger). Only the ring remains today and is either worn on the right ring finger or on the left ring finger when married.
My legacy consists of my fahter's Tag Heuer spirotechnique, my grandfather's silver plated zippo slim and parker ballpen. Plus the first things I bought with my first wage: Tortoise Ray-Ban wayfarers and my own solid brass Zippo. I also bought a pair of Dr. Martens. All of those items are at least 20 years old now.
My mother has my great great grandfathers gold signet ring. I believe my grandmother may have some signet rings, I personally think they are a great idea.
really good film, my family name has a good coat of arms and can be traced back to a kings son in Ireland in the 4th century, and a castle town named with my surname, it just marvellous to think about it.

My Great Grandmother's Father was a Russian Duke, so my gold signet ring has the Russian Imperial Romanov dynasty eagle on it to represent our family link to the Tsars. My last imperial court ancestor before the crown fell in 1918 was a portrait painter to Tsar Nicholas II.

Subscribed. This is a great info vid. I also will inherit my grandfathers signet ring from my dad. This will go to my eldest boy, but my youngest will inherit my husbands signet and his wedding ring which has a 1crt diamond in a flush mount. I still think I will buy them their own when they turn 18.

I know this is an old video but I’ve come across this and love how informational it is. I really want to get a coat of arms signet or crest signet but I will have to do research on my family name. I would probably have to take a DNA test because Cash is either English or Americanized German.
What's with the guys pushing dislike? The video just came out and there's already a significant percentage of dislikes. There's a lot of youtube guys who I do like who I feel provoke dislike clicks but TGV is the last one I feel provokes the dislikes.

Hi TGV - great video. A family member purchased my gold signet ring for my 40th birthday. It contains blue lapis lazuli and in terms of memories reflected my time spent in Afghanistan just before that.

A signet ring isn't something I had considered before. Yet I like the idea of it being an heirloom, much like the secondary reason I've started collecting watches. I particularly like the idea of having a family crest. Hmmm, I'm going to give this some more thought. :)
Great Video! Very fascinating family history you conveyed. I am interested in these books you have shared with us. My interest particularly on heraldry and it's various meaning. My surname lineage takes me as far as late 16 century Somerset. So far no signs of armorial bearings or other heraldic symbols. Unfortunately, due to the bombing in WW2 many historical documents had been destroyed during the air raids. Nevertheless, the wax seal is classy and still has it's practical use. Thank You for the excellent information!
Great explanation of the signet ring, I m curious if you would recommend 9ct , 14ct or 18ct for my first signet ring? Or.. should I ask, you happy with your 9ct ring or you rather had it in 14 or 18?

The 9k gold looks more rosish on camera. I'm not sure if it's because they add copper or brass to heighten the red in the gold to offset the whiteness from platinum and silver, or if gold just looks more red when combined with whiter metals.
I love the rings though. The Oxford style is sleek and classy. Of your grandfather's I love the traditional one with the stone. I actually inherited a signet ring from my uncle who never married, he had nothing engraved on it and it's way too big for me (he had it made to get over his arthritic fingers when he got sick). But now I know what it is.

Not to flog a dead thread, but Dexter rings in the UK also have a fine product. They did my signet ring in sterling silver, the engraving was expertly done, and thier customer service was fantastic. I highly recommend them.

You do know how common it is for one to have there initials on a signet ring
In Switzerland, every family (noble or not) has a coat of arms and every adult and able bodied man can wear the familys emblem. This is due to swiss long mercenary history and is made so swiss mercenaries can identify themselves when fighting for opposing armies. This includes (in the middle ages) shield, tabard, bannier and the signet ring (usually on the right ring finger). Only the ring remains today and is either worn on the right ring finger or on the left ring finger when married.

Plus the first things I bought with my first wage: Tortoise Ray-Ban wayfarers and my own solid brass Zippo. I also bought a pair of Dr. Martens. All of those items are at least 20 years old now.
My mother has my great great grandfathers gold signet ring. I believe my grandmother may have some signet rings, I personally think they are a great idea.

My Great Grandmother's Father was a Russian Duke, so my gold signet ring has the Russian Imperial Romanov dynasty eagle on it to represent our family link to the Tsars. My last imperial court ancestor before the crown fell in 1918 was a portrait painter to Tsar Nicholas II.
Jesse Abel the family coat of arms is given down from the fathers side, so that would only be your crest if it’s from you father’s father’s family

Hey TGV! I was wondering, what do you think about the Grand Seiko Spring Drive series? Especially the snowflake and diver models?
