I’ve heard the song described as: the original version is a warning of how society turning its eye to problems of the world, and this version is an angry response to those warnings being ignored, which is why the song builds and David adds the raspiness toward the end of the song.

I love the last 30 seconds of the song. The song starts slow and melancholy, gradually growing in power and desperation as he increasingly tries get his message out to an audience that either seemingly cannot hear him or is completely ignoring his warnings, until it climaxes in the last thirty seconds...and in the final seconds of the song, that intense emotional energy can no longer sustain itself and suddenly collapses back into exhaustion and melancholy as the song comes to an end.
    Beautiful.

You mentioned that he conveyed a lot of emotion in his voice, and that he seemed to be taking us on an emotional journey. A story exists that when he recorded the vocals for the music video, the lyrics dug into him so much that when he finished, he went out behind the studio and cried. Possibly apocryphal, but it fits. Love the analysis! Great job!

I don't think it's a story. David actually said (I think in his Loudwire interviews) that he spent three hours in the studio trying to get the vocals right, and did cry when he heard the recording. (He also said all he had to work with was the piano music because the band didn't have the rest of the music ready.)

It is interesting that I am not a huge metal fan though I do like David Draiman's voice and a few of Disturbed's songs. The training he received as a Jewish Cantor in Israel when added to his God given voice makes his voice an amazing instrument. The range, rasp, clearness, vebratto, head voice on and on is amazing. Most of all it is kind of rare to have music really tear into my soul as deeply as this did. I can not listen to this version without goosebumps and tears.

#1, David is also a trained Jewish Cantor... a particularly well trained "not professional" singer. Simply, he knows singing at a different level than most metal bands.
#2, Canting is a particularly "emotional" style of singing (when done right)
Paul Simon said David's birthday version is the quintessential version of the song, demonstrating the Pathos that S&G couldn't project - something a couple of hippy kids in the 60's really never groked.

David has said that the original intent for this cover was to make it an acoustic song to show off his voice but every time he tried to sing it soft and flowing through the end he would find himself slipping into his typical metal sound by the end of the song. He finally gave in and added the electric instruments back in and just let it flow however it came out.

Yes, he was sitting because he was worried he might pass out! In a later interview I saw, he said he had his ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor on standby because he didn't know what else to do! I can't remember if he said the doctor was actually present backstage or just by phone, but I think he said they were. You should check out the interview he did with the Charismatic Voice, he was really nice and well-spoken, and down to earth. He is just such a good guy. It was cool to see them 'talking shop' a little and Elizabeth was fangirling a bit, which was cute.

Though Dave draiman is possibly an exceptional example it's so common to see metal singers completely overlooked. Most have an incredible 'normal' singing voice. Sam Ryder being a great example of a metal singer who went mainstream and showcased the vocal clarity and range

I love how he incorporates the physical sound of silence in to the song eg the beginning of the song is silent for a while as it is near the very end. That use of silence itself adds to it.
As you mentioned him using a closed mouth while singing and how it was still very powerful I know Roy Orbison did similar thing with his singing too and his singing was brilliant, he fooled Bono in a recording studio making him think that Roy had just mouthed the words and was surprised at how strong his voice was when they heard the playback. I feel David has the same ability and it's just phenomenal. Every single time I hear this song I cry happy/sad tears. It's such a powerful song I honestly now have to consider it my ultimate favourite. I've been around music for about 50 years thanks to my dad being a writer and a band manager. I've heard some great songs, terrific bands and have some great memories but boy this one just tops them all. 56 years old and crying when hearing this and not ashamed to say so.

TArt Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. Sanford Greenberg became a wealthy businessman and the $400 got Simon and Garfunkle's music career started.

One thing not understood about metal it's that it's the genre that most demands versatility in all of "popular" music. Nowhere else are you supposed to transition immediately from a slow sentimental ballad, to a 180 bpm headbanger, to a noble prophet like tone at mid tempo, just like that, from a love song to a blood drenched battlefield. That's what metal singers do everyday. No place for one-trick ponies. 😁🤘

But the one thing I want to bring up is the fact that he is taking this to the point where it's a shout-out to tell people hey this is still going on and we must fix this or it will become even worse then it was in the past

David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night on Conan! but still producing a masterful performance! You have to get the lyrics and watch the official video, (another masterpiece) to be on your own and play a couple of times, as it brings out emotions from your subconscious, that I couldn’t tell anyone, yet this beautiful version, has done that, not in a bad way but that’s how this masterpiece of a video and the Disturbed, which I will say now, is the best cover, ever, that can make me think, also produce tears about things I should of done earlier in life, Creating tears which is fine. Get the lyrics and official video, shut the door and play and watch. Stupendous!! Ian from U.K. ❤ 25/10/23

I disagree with your last sentence. I certainly think Rob Halford (for example) during the "Sad Wings of Destiny" period not only sang heartwrenchingly beautifully but with no filter to his emotion. My disagreement is not that metal bands have an illustrious record. If you pick any form of music, including that which you dislike (in my instance I mostly dislike military marching bands) you will still find musicians playing from the heart. It may take the form of a classical quartet (go Ms Janine Jansen) , Neil Young on harmonica, Janis Joplin on weed and heroin or the trombone player that takes the instrument as capable of more than emulating farts. I adore good metal bands but please don't limit your pleasure.

David Draiman is a trained cantor so he can do these in his sleep, also quoting a magazine article "In a Facebook post, Paul Simon says: “In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of The Sound of Silence on Conan this week. The S&G cover also appears on Disturbed’s latest album, Immortalized.”
Draiman responded in a Facebook post on Disturbed’s page, saying: “Humbled and grateful beyond words. Thank you so much Mr Paul Simon.” " so kind of a big deal to get the seal of approval from the person who wrote the song. Hugs and love from Greece stay safe and healthy.

Late to this for sure, and only half way through, but... I've worked along side basically hundreds of young singers as a technician, and you have a grasp that I've rarely seen on a first exposure to a song. Granted, it's English and 'easier' to grasp than opera normally is (with the subject being recent, modern, and somewhat on going), you've got most of the technical figured out which I didn't hear when this song actually came out and people I worked with were listening to it and explaining it to each other. Great job!
Something you may not know (I haven't read all the comments), was that David was actually sick while performing this and nearly cancelled. Plus, though he's a metal singer, he's classically trained as a Cantor, which obviously allows him to have the emotion and depth in himself to give this beautiful song the new life it deserves...
