I think someone pretty famous once said about Stevie Ray Vaughan, He is the type of guitarist that inspires people pick up the guitar to learn it, and makes established guitarists set the guitar down and walk away. Kinda like what you just said at the end..lol
Every time I watch this track of Stevie playing his heart and soul out brings a tear to my eye what a player.

My Uncle Larry Davis wrote this song and recorded it in 1958. He gave Stevie the blessings to record it and Stevie made him proud.

After much consideration. This was the greatest guitarist of all time.
I was a 17 year old kid at that show. Used to cross the border from Buffalo and see lots of shows in Canada. Friend of mine wanted me to go up to Toronto and see a guitarist named Stevie Ray Vaughn and I thank God I did. Completely blown away and a fan since. What a great loss to lose him so young. Front row at a show in the Buffalo area two weeks before he was killed, last song Voodoo child Jimmy Hendrix, RIP SRV.

Yup,most people watching,listening to SRV ended up with wrinkles,frustrated, confused,pissed off and left saying why can’t I do that?At the end of the day you just have got to enjoy greatness and respect the talent. And it’s comforting to know that you’re not the only one that can’t play like SRV,I doubt that anyone can.
No one can compare to his greatness! Don't feel bad. Stevie died in a helicopter crash after a concert. His ability to play still brings tears to my eyes.
There are 2 SRV videos where a string pops. 1. He changes guitar without missing a single note. And 2. He changes the popped string while continuing to perform. AMAZING!

@@bullymaguire5838 yeah man, that was absolutely nuts. But there's another one where string broke and he just did the seemingly effortless switch when the time came, it was something to behold.
His note-bending is so nuanced, his attention to pitch is so well articulated. I'm convinced he heard that that string had slipped out of PERFECT tuning and needed immediate retuning. What really blows me away is the ease with which he resolved it. Everything he does in relation to his guitar just seems so second natured.

I find it ironic that you mention 'third stone from the sun'. Before he was moved to his current monument, the location of Jimi's grave was the third head stone from a concrete sundial feature at the cemetery. We (those who lived nearby) would tell folks looking for Jimi to look for the third stone from the sun. Note: Jimi is laid to rest at the Greenwood Memorial in Renton WA. at the intersection of 4th St and Monroe.

Brother Stevie was truly one with the guitar. Either he grew out of his guitar or the guitar grew from him. Magic!!
Very much this! Considering he learned to play listening to vinyl's and the radio, his ear for notes and pitch must have been off the charts. He fairly often swapped out guitars in the middle of a song if he was unhappy with the state of its tuning and couldn't make minor adjustments like he did here. And his playing was so energetic and aggressive, bending the heck out of those thick .13s, it's normal to throw strings out of tune.
Stevie was on fire at the El Mocambo. He was channeling and you can see it in his face, body and playing. You should watch the whole concert. It's simply amazing.

Stevie Ray Vaughan (SRV) was a son of Texas and the natural successor to the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix... he got into playing guitar as a kid from his guitarist older brother Jimmie Vaughan (who is still actively playing today). He left home as a teen and started playing in Texas clubs in the 70's in various bands and showed promise in the blues style. He struggled w/ drug and alcohol abuse in his personal & professional life, sadly...
Finally in 1978, he formed SRV and Double Trouble... w/ Chris Layton (drums)...Tommy Shannon (bass) who knew Stevie before, joined in 1980... After years of struggling, he debuted SRV & Double Trouble in 1983 w/ the album 'Texas flood' and it sold 2x platinum in the US.
Stevie Ray Vaughan became a sensation in the 80's, releasing 4 studio albums that sold platinum - "Couldn't stand the weather" (1984)... 'Soul to soul' (1985)... and 'In step' (1989)... He also recorded an album 'Family style' as Vaughan Brothers w/ Jimmie Vaughan.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990 in Wisconsin, after playing a concert in East Troy. SRV was 35 years of age.
After his untimely death, the Vaughan Brothers album "Family style" was released and went platinum... his last recordings was released as 'The sky is crying' in 1991... His 'Greatest hits' album in 1995 sold 2x platinum.
I love to see people see, hear and react to SRV for the first time. The man and his music has brought so much joy and awe to millions of people. That is the the true spirit of SRV living on.

7:20 I always love this part where he steps up to the mic to make the audience think he’s going into the next verse, then he just steps back and starts that slow breakdown. He was a great showman.
And that break @ 8:47 was 100% necessary, because how could SRV, his backups, AND the crowd survive at such a high level of "into-it-ness" for so long?! Way too heavy for long exposure. SRV should have had a warning label!
I think he stepped forward to hit his distortion pedal that is right beneath the mic. So he had to go there to change the sound :D

The man never played it the same way twice!!!! Every night he had a different feeling on how to perform tunes and his mood that day/night steered him in a certain direction and that’s what you got as an audience member from the GOAT!!!!! Been there done that watching him dozens of times in clubs throughout Austin!!!!! Yes I’m old!!!! 😍 Pure talent and emotions!!!! Just an unbelievable performer and Double Trouble ruled as his band!!!! So talented!!!!! As BB King said in amazement after playing with him once (BB was a great influence on Stevie when he was growing up and definitely wasn’t a slouch on playing Blues), we blues guitarist play in sentences and Stevie plays the in paragraphs!!!!! I've seen a LOT of reaction videos and no one comes close to blowing minds like Stevie Ray blows minds.
I count myself as extremely fortunate to have seen him perform in person. It was in what a lot of people would consider a dumpy bar. But that night, there was no where else I would have wanted to be.
Never give up on playing the guitar girl ... there isn't anyone that can be as great as Stevie was but keep playing rest in peace brother Stevie the world misses you
You aren't wrong. The guitar is simply an extension of his body, heart and soul. He wouldn't have needed a voice at all. His guitar was his voice. Just watch his mouth during parts of his solos. He mouthing what he is playing. A generational talent that was with us for far too short of a time. I'm glad a whole new generation is discovering him!
SRV was an artist for God... we just got lucky enough to witness his prayers to the creator...
Some months before we lost Stevie, he used to stay at the Claremont Resort & Spa in Oakland, CA. Where I bartended at the time. Got to know and chat with SRV before and after his going sober. SRV was a real and down to earth person who loved life and those who influenced his development.
Stevie asked me once who my favorite guitarist was which is and always will be Robin Trower... when SRV asked why, I told him "because like you, Robin plays like he's playing for God and we just happen to be in the room" You should've seen the ear-to-ear grin spread across his face... 😎👍❤️🙏

It doesn't get mentioned much but my favorite part is when he gets soft and quiet in his playing (around 7:30 in this video). He pulls the audience into an intimate space with him and it's amazing.
Also, Stevie intentionally brings it down to a whisper, not only for the intimate moment, but also to have a calm before the storm moment. Because following that part, he goes guitar- cyclone on all of our asses and hits his crescendo by playing behind his back. Just redonkulous

Welcome to Texas Biss ! As an old Texan myself I can tell that Stevie was Texas Blues Music at its finest. In fact in my opinion SRV was the best blues guitarist ever,period. Stevie played with such raw emotion and power that it often seemed like the music was channeled through him instead of coming from him. I can tell you it was an awesome thing to behold live. Two of my favorite songs are “Tightrope” and “Life by the Drop”.

I saw SRV live before he became super famous. I knew nothing about him, hadn't heard a song, but he was supposed to be a legend. I was absolutely blown away. I bought my first guitar the next day.

He was also very, soft spoken, thoughtful, and humble. He always gave props to those that came before him, those that he learned from. Your reaction was spot on. Everything you said made perfect sense. He definitely got a boat-load of talent.

Always a favorite. I actually like this song from the Volunteer Jam in Tennessee. I think 1987.... After he got clean from drugs. Part of that show was live on the Jerry Lewis MD telethon. I've found his whole performance, but don't know if anyone has just that song on a video.
@Dan Jones everyone has their own favorites, one of the bad things about watching SRV videos is the quality especially the sound. I really don't judge pre or post addiction. Stevie was great in both eras, tho in the latter stages of his addiction it did affect his playing but for me he was at the top of his game while performing at The Capital theater.
Stevie ray put into music a man desiring his lady, his blues style guitar and vocals perfectly tells this very basic feeling with s style that left us all in awe.
Stevie died after midnight on my birthday. 26th into 27th. I sipped whiskey until sunrise listening to tributes on a local Philly rock station. RIP ❤
There are only two other blues guitarists that I can think of who can shred like this... Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher. Stevie is just jaw-dropping to watch.
amazing how he could start with basic age-old tried and true blues lick, and add so many flourishes and runs and fills and still be smooth as silk the whole way, adding a few well placed rough edges here and there... a true master of his instrument

Self taught from age 7, never reading music, just feeling it. He devoted his whole life to expressing himself through his music and just slayed everyone when he played. I would love you to react to one of Stevie's own songs called Aint Gone 'N' Give Up On Live performed at the Capitol Theatre in 1985. It is a very bluesy love song performed to perfection🎶🎸🎶. The real gift is for us. The work and passion this man put in. The hours the bleeding fingers the study of the language of music. He put in so much work that we got to hear him relax and play with the soul his work allowed him to be so free in.The gift was to me in inspiration and drive for me to learn how to be as good as I am. Stevie overcame his addictions, became a Christian and said that he didn't want to be a master of his instrument, but an instrument of the Master.
SRV was on a guitar playing level all his own. No one has ever played like him, before, or, since.

The only person you should compare your guitar playing ability to is yourself from the day before.
The fact that you have any experience at all playing guitar is exponentially better than the average person, so don't dwell so much on the destination - just enjoy the journey. ;-)
Great, real reaction. One of the best reactions I have ever seen. Thank you for being so real. As for SRV, he was one of a kind. He did not play for show, he played from the heart. He said that if you do not play from the heart, it's not worth it.
As for other SRV videos, there are many, but top of my mind is his performance of Voodoo Chile live in Austin, Texas, as well as his performance of Life Without You (9/21/1985 from the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ). And there is Lenny (also from the El Mocambo), a song dedicated to his wife, and another is his performance of Little Wing (another Jimi Hendrix song). There is so much more, but these will get you well versed in the SRV magic.
As for his death- he died in a helicopter accident. Early in the morning of Monday, August 27, 1990, SRV was killed in a helicopter crash near East Troy, Wisconsin. He was performing at a concert at the Alpine Valley resort, a concert that included people like Eric Clapton. There was only one road to and from the venue, so most of the artists were flown in and out via helicopters. He left on the last helicopter, and it crashed shortly after take-off. A very sad day for music indeed.
That Passaic Performance is insane. Life Without You to me has probably my favorite guitar solo by him. He just tears into his guitar after

I heard that Eric Clapton offered SRV his seat on that helicopter ride that morning, which SRV took because he had another show he had to get to. Fate can be a cruel bitch sometimes.

Exactly. He heard the string was slightly out of tune and adjusted. He didn't change the tune due to the needs of the music as he doesn't adjust the tune in other recordings of him performing this song.

Long time fan of SRV (I'm 74) just want to reiterate - like the lady said - most people can't sing with that much emotion and talent - only a handful can play guitar on Stevie's level _ if any - but no one sings like that and plays guitar at this level behind his back all at the same time! Normal people have to focus their concentration on a specific activity to perform this well - Stevie manages to perform on this exalted level like normal humans breath in and out - scratch an itch or swat at a fly.

I don’t think their has been anyone who enjoyed playing music more than SRV,he will always be looked at as being the greatest guitar player to come along.
Don't give up on your own guitar playing. 'Most' of all the great timeless hits that we all love were created using 3 or 4 decent simple chords. A structure with space for vocals and sounds brings order and joy to the ear.
NEVER forget this ! A 'Beautiful' song is MOST OFTEN SIMPLE and should always be the aim.
For example, take 'Let It Be', by the Beatles (go listen to the song). The space within the structure allowing for 'all' sounds and words to unify and yet stand out are what brings on the beauty of the song.
You can create 'wonderful' music' without being either a Stevie Ray Vaughn or a Beethoven.
The ear knows what is good, and, on the whole, simplicity never has failed in the recording industry.

Where at the beginning of it he starts with a brown guitar which was not tuned right so he replaces the guitar mid song doesn’t skip a beat and then starts really tuning the damn guitar and setting up the amps mid song it’s damn incredible to watch taking place and giving an incredible performance all at once? Many who have reacted to it have not even noticed that he did a total guitar changed right before their eyes lmfao😂. He was the GOAT. He also gives an uplifting sermon about life mid song also which to this day has relevance and positivity for everyone!. There will never be another SRV and we were robbed of such a great soul.
