The carriage scene was everything. It was also a full circle from what happened in season 2, where Colin says he wouldn't dream of courting her. But in the carriage he is on his knees, teary-eyed, confessing that he can't stop dreaming of her.

You must have been watching a different show. It was the only real love scene in all of Bridgerton. I thought Simon looked forced as he never actually ever said he loved her. And I thought Anthony always looked like he was holding back when they were kissing. When Anthony was in the loves scenes in the first season, he was way more into it.

One thing was missing from Colin's travels this season: Penelope's correspondence. She encouraged him while he was on his prior trip, kept him grounded. This time, she did not, and he lost himself. He came back and tried to be like his older brothers, frequenting brothels, being promiscuous, putting on a suave, flirtatious demeanor, trying to be a rake like the Duke, Anthony, and Benedict, rather than the gallant, kind, honorable man he usually is.

@@thenextseason Just had another thought. Imagine the isolation Penelope went through while he was gone, and everyone was "in the country". She was crushed by Colin's cruel comment at the last ball, so she didn't exchange letters with him. Eloise wasn't speaking to her, and in episode 1, she told Eloise that she had avoided society, in the country, out of respect for Eloise's feelings (about not wanting to see her). So she was trapped with her family. No one to talk to, no one to write to, utterly alone, with no way to escape.
No wonder she is so motivated to find a husband.

The shot planning was impeccable. Colin has always been towering over her for two seasons, clearly the one setting the boundaries of their relationship. Even their prior interactions this season, she is always staring up at him. In this moment, he chases after her, then falls on his knees at her feet, giving all the power to accept or discard his love. You can see him in that moment, doing exactly what his mother told him his father had done "He gathered the courage to ask."

I have watched this scene five times since Thursday. My favorite details are when Colin wordlessly asks Pen for consent, her rough exclamation when she feels him touch her, and the small detail of the way he holds his hand, keeping his fingers away, as he lifts up the sleeve of her dress. I completely agree. I kept wondering why they went back to the Mondrichs. Are they going to play a big part in the last 4 episodes, maybe? Their story line didn't make sense and didn't feel enjoyable at all. In fact, the actors didn't seem like they a clue about their purpose either. I had rather learned more about Francisca instead. I also thought Benedict's story line with the widow was unnecessary. They could've shown his effort to take over the role of head of the familly while Anthony was away. I'd love to see him swtiching from immature goofball to having to be the responsible one when it comes to the family's fortune.

I think Colin is going to help the Mondrichs as he said he was in their debt at the end of season 2 for tipping him off about Jack Featherington. Will wants to keep his club running and his new place in the Ton and I think Colin will help him. I really hope so because i love their friendship with the Bridgerton men! ☺

Sometimes, it's the subtle clues that really show what is going on in a person's mind. We know Colin had a dream at the start of episode 3 and in episode 4 he is a total wreck. He is hiding in his study, he is not able to engage in "exciting" activities and is getting drunk out of his head just to block his thoughts.
I really felt that he is tormented by his feelings for Penelope and I didn't need any extra flashbacks of him thinking of her.

I agree with everything you said in this critique. My favorite part in the carriage was the look on Colin's face that said, "Yeah, I am your man and you are my girl!" Colin the Geek, should have stayed a little more chaste though, his two older brothers were slutty enough (in a good way). As he transformed into "Hot Colin" it would have been more romantic if his sex life had been more low key and in tune with Pen. So happy for Pen because she got her man! I agree. Too much was crammed into this season.
I wanted to see more of Colin and Penelope. They made Penelope look foolish...a lot. I would have loved to see her glow up happen before Colin came home (like the book). I would have loved to see that she had a bunch of suitors on the opening of the season. She would still be cold to him and after sharing why, his apology could have come in the form of helping her choose a husband out of the many. He would have to inquire and find out who was the best for her.
I mean, she was only a wallflower due to her ugly outfits. She's been hearing conversations between people on the marriage mart and flirting and many hook-ups for her research for Whistledown articles for years, she shouldn't have been that unconfident. She's a business owner, rich, beautiful, smart and well-dressed. She not only wrote these mini-magazines but she navigated finding a printer, in the seedy part of town, did the math and negotiated getting them printed and distributed. I'm calling BS on being unconfident. She's a mastermind.
Also, in an interview Nicola was told to tone down the kisses because Penelope was an "extra virginal" character. But so was Daphne and Kate. And Pen had talked to Marina about babies, etc. Knew enough about the act to comment that (in another season) that the lady's baby looked like the footman, indicating she had an idea where babies came from.
Getting back to the plot, in the middle of it all, Colin could see that other men found her attractive in a different way and starts to see it too. She would have been somewhat over him but she asks him for a kiss (or several) because she wants to be good at it for her new husband and who better to practice on than "just a friend who doesn't think she counts and would never court?" He is more experienced so he agrees to tutor her and then realizes that he is madly in love with her and has been all along.
He is tormented by watching her be courted and wooed by all of these men. And he starts messing with them one by one. She's angered by Chaos Colin and his meddling and leaves in the carriage. The carriage scene carries out just like it did.
I hated seeing Pen be made a fool of and grasping at anyone that would pay attention to her. The balloon rescue was so poorly done that I am shocked that the pre-released pictures made it more exciting than it was. I mean Daphne almost got shot, Kate was in a coma and Penelope could have easily walked...slowly...to get out of the way of the balloon.
And Colin only gave her TWO lessons. And by the end she was saying that SHE asked HIM to help her when HE offered TO HELP HER FIND SOMEONE ELSE!
I want a redo of this season, it was super weak. Cut out the bazillion story lines and re-shoot it.

Hard disagree on a couple points, but mainly that she shouldn't have been so unconfident because no matter how much you watch or study others, it is an entirely different thing to act or fake it yourself. She'd also not only been ignored because of ugly outfits, she was ostracized because of seemingly being worthless. The toll of that kind of constant mistreatment does not magically wash away when you will it to. She really needed to be reminded by him, but really anybody, that she's worthy and capable and certainly beautiful. My two cents, though.

    • @emtee3098
      @emtee3098 Před 21 dnem +7

Her lack of confidence is rooted in how her mother & sisters treat her and it’s reinforced by how she’s treated in society.
Go back to season 1 in particular. Her sisters mocked her weight & her skin and her mother made it clear she was viewed as less desirable than her sisters.
Then when she attends social events, no men sign her dance card and no suitors ever come to call on her. She even told Eloise that she feels invisible.
The man she’s crushing on only sees her as a friend. Marina told her that her love for Colin is an unrequited fantasy & that he sees Penelope in the same light as his sister, not as a woman. On top of that, he almost married Marina and was still struggling to get over his heartbreak in the 2nd season.
All these things (in addition to Cressida’s bullying) reinforce the feeling that she’s undesirable, going to be left in the shelf and will never experience love.
No matter how many people you study, you can’t easily override how you truly feel about yourself deep down.

I get what you are saying. But she, in an era where it was difficult for even men to succeed in business, built a mini-empire as a woman. And that is monumental. She sparred with the Queen with words. Evaded detectives and so many more. That is a person who is smart enough to model others behavior and practice while she was away. That's a person who has learned how to solve complex problems. Which would have made her more confident than most women.
It would have taken time but she could have practiced off-season. Often the wealthy would leave the city and travel to their country homes. And other wealthy people would visit other wealthy people and stay as their guests. She could have met a nice male friend who helped her if she had needed it. I would have loved to have seen that part of her glow up.
Being in the bad outfits gave her a cover for Whistledown. If she was prominent and popular, Whistledown wouldn't have been able to skulk around and find out all of the juicy gossip. It wouldn't exist. It was a tool for her. She needed to seem worthless in order to be successful. She had claws when she needed them though.
I love strong women who figure it out and overcome obstacles. I would have loved to have seen a strong Penelope.

I don't think he is a rake in the books, just someone who is charming and who everyone easily love. We don't see him that much flirting or having mistress. I don't understand why after making him look like an innocent boy in the first two seasons we saw him going to brothel, that was unnecessary. I love the adaptation but the other disappointing thing it's about his writings. In the books it's just a beautiful description of the country he's visiting not his se.ual expériences in other countries.

Pens sisters were okay since Pen is a main character, so it's natural that we get a view on her homelife.

So I didn’t know that the carriage scene Colin was already supposed to know about Penelope being whistled down. I’m wondering how they are going to reveal that and how Collin will respond. I hope Penelope gets what she truly deserves. All she wants to do is be happy. I think she would probably not focused too much on being lady whistle down once she is Mrs. Bridgerton

I so wish they had not had Colin going to brothels. He, of all the elder Bridgerton men, should have been a virgin, a gentleman. There was no need for those scenes or portraying him that way. And the carriage scene could have been so much more romantic with just the proclamation of love and kissing. Going in for the kill immediately was so disappointing. We watch period pieces for the build up of love and romance, if you are going to portray sex, do it slowly, thoughtfully, gentle and romantic, not hard, fast and furious. So many great period romances that needed only one slow, romantic, much waited and yearned for kiss at the end to make the story a hit. Very disappointed in the writers.

i feel the same as you however i think Francesca is a little too dull i don´t get her she is very wierd. so the storyline didn´t really get me. and normally in other seasons it´s the diamond, or the attention of the diamond that create the drama we know so well but that didn´t happen. at least not yet. but i believe it will when Collin or maybe the world know who she is and i can´t wait for pens mother to finally se her for what she is. a cleaver beautiful and kind woman compared to all of her siblings.
and i agree that there was to many storylines going on but i get why they had to get Cressida's story in because we all have been wondering about her and she is at her 3 year out so it´s now or never. i think she will marry Deplin but i wish more for her. she grew up without love and now will also live without love. but idk if she wants that maybe all she care about is to escape home, so we will have to wait and see.
the carriage scene was perfect and i just read nicola is 37 years old how is that even possible? she looks like a 24-26 year old it was very streamy and very privat in some ways. but it´s a shape they didn´t have more screentime to really build up that change from friends to love it happened so suddenly after that kiss.

I just felt it wasn't very romantic enough. In my opinion I think the scean could have been done much better. Penelope is a beautiful girl she deserved a more romantic proposal than this. I’m sorry the carriage scene did not work for me. The passion seemed forced, like they knew they had to give this couple something steamy to do because it’s just the Bridgerton way, but for other plots with the same trope it would’ve been a slower progression to something that physical. I feel like considering that they have a” long time friends turned into lovers” storyline, him declaring his love shouldn’t have suddenly turned into, OK now let’s hook up in the back of this carriage and let me propose. It should’ve been left as a sweet moment where Penelope is dumbfounded by the revelation, and they get to talk about how long he’s been feeling this way versus how long she’s been feeling her way and end with a longing kiss. There needed to be more instances in the prior episodes of us seeing him suddenly look at her with new eyes and think of her as a vixen for this to have the payoff it was looking for. For me.

But I feel the chemistry would be even more believable if they use some you tongue while kissing, I noticed so many actors just kiss like this only with lips and no tongue and it always looks a bit off. Too much screen time lost on side characters.
    The Mondrichs? Unnecessary and boring.

I don’t feel Colin being genuine on his feelings… Not Colin’s fault, his acting was good but the way the director directed their scenes gahhhh… I also hoped Nicola speak more softly on their fights but perfect on other cases… And show Colin expressions when they kiss cause we don’t see how genuine their love is, looks one sided againnnn… I’m disappointed 😢 The storyline seems forced and they should have added more scenes of them together before their first kiss like really enjoying themselves being each others company which the book was very specific to show from friendship to lovers… Seems forced altogether even the storyline of other Bridgertons… I waited 2 years and that’s it? 😔
