Roller Coaster Sounds: Explained
Vložit
- čas přidán 22. 07. 2024
- Apart from screaming guests left right and centre, the sounds experienced within a theme park are often dominated by one type of ride - Roller Coasters. Whether it’s the clank of the visitors climbing up to a great height, or the roar of a train as it navigates the track, roller coasters are known for being loud. Therefore, in this video, we’ll explore the various sounds you might hear from a roller coaster, including how the noise is made and why it actually occurs.

My favourite roller coaster sound is the loud sighs coaster enthusiasts emit whenever anyone puts "the" in front of a roller coaster's name.
Silvarret- Well my favourite sound is the launch of The Kingda Ka
@@chally1494 *UGH*
Ah yes, very true
"De Baron" haha! Echt verschrikkelijk is dat...
the the smiler
You forgot about the PTSSSSSSSSSSSsssss from the air leaving the brake piston
Aaron Productions and the sound of wicked cyclone and its loudness
There's many other noises that can be heard, these are just some! :)
COASTER BOT I know, I’m just saying that that one was very important in my opinion
👏🏾👏🏾right! My favorite.
Yess!!! I know what you mean and that really is a beautiful sound
Nobody:
Me at 4AM: *Roller coaster sounds: explained*

He ain't wrong.
Arrow: Cli-Cli-Click Click, Cli-Cli-Click Click...
B&M: ClickClickClickClickClick...
Intamin: Click Click Click, Click Click Click...
RMC: *REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
B&M: ............
I always make the joke on Steel Vengeance that the Anti-Rollbacks are just shouting SAFETY reaaaaally loudly
Why was this hilarious and accurate. RMC is clack clack clack clack, clack clack clack clack clack. SNS is pssssshhhh, whoosh!
My indoor amusement park has something built by arrow it just goes RRRAAARW and that is on the chain lift the coaster sounds like a dinosaur stomping around
@@coastaku1954 same goes for Untamed now
The roar of Nemesis always added to its theme for me. Especially since the queue is essentially through it and it goes under and over you. This is a monster trapped under the earth? Sure sounds like it.
I couldn't agree more! :)
Oh my thats such a good one! I agree 100%
The roar simulates Nemesis’s struggle to wriggle free of its metal restraints.
Its so intimidating because you can feel the ground shaking in the queue as it comes towards you.
They will probably add sand during the retrack to make it quieter and appease the locals. It's a shame, really.
My favorite roller coaster sound is when they announce temporary down time
You mean when they tell the guests the ride is open again? Yes, I agree
No
Ah yes, very cool
Crocaulu Lightning Rod will be down for the 84th time today
Thank You for your patience and it will be open shortly
Down for the rest of the day
ooh baby that's my FAVOURITE
The clicking you hear when you start up Roller Coaster Tycoon 2.
Make roller coaster tastes next
I haven't tried to lick a roller coaster yet. Might have to do that soon! ;)
@@coasterbot Lick Wicker Man, as a reference to Taylor's parody of Wicker Man when it includes "Licker Man"
@@coasterbot hot
Steel vengeance tastes really good, you should try it next time your're at CP
that moment when *objectophilia kicks in*
Taron's roar chills me everytime even when I'm not on the ride. Through it being located in a valley, the launch sound can be hear loud and far. I At the same time, I find it almost spooky when coasters are so quiet they only make a slight "swoosh", especially when no one is screaming. Feels like something is broken.
Flys testruns are creepy, because its so quiete, besides the brakes
I live in Florida, and I really enjoy the roars of the B&Ms here. Sheikra and Montu have great sounds, and Kumba and The Incredible Hulk sound even louder (by design I believe). SeaWorld's B&Ms are also great coasters, but they never stand out for their sounds.
Cheetah Hunt at Busch Gardens also plays a whooshing sound effect during the magnetic launches, which seems unique as far as I'm aware. This isn't quite the same as the coaster sounds, but I like how you can hear people's screams echo on Rock n' Rollercoaster. It makes it sound as if there's another train going past you, despite there only being one train allowed at a time.
At cedar point the raptor has an amazing roar
I love the launche sound of Cheetah Hunt, one of my favorite coaster in the US so far.
Greetings from Berlin
Kyle Marcy Raptors roar is amazing. Banshee also has a very loud roar as well
@@HouseMD01994 Same. Another really good one is the brand new Velocicoaster in Universal Studios
Love the sound of Hulk. Used to work there and hear it so much it became like a friend.
The smiler's roar is my personal favourite.
That's definitely a good one! :)
same
Jake Holmes not just the roar but the clunks on the first lift hill
The Smiler was shut down after a tragic accident in 2015. An empty car got stuck on the tracks and the operator failed to notice and ended up sending a loaded train careening straight into it, causing leg amputations and other serious injuries
@@jasminejohnston6393 so what?
i find rollercoaster sounds really satisfying and relaxing
idk why
There’s this Theme Park in Wales called Oakwood and there’s a wooden roller coaster called Treetops and it’s really loud
Rollercoaster Asmr?
Omg I thought I was the only one!!
The colossus chain sounds amazing
I agree!
George Ingram The creak-like sound when it disengages from the lift hill just before the first drop 👌🏼
My favourite rollercoaster sounds have to be Taron's launches.
Taron's second launch is insane!
The sound of the second launch and those aggressive safety instructions gave me nightmares! And I love it!
@@olleksheppert1554 Omg yes the safety instructions!! WILKOMMEN BY TARON
Yessss! You can hear it through the whole Park!
Came here to write exactly the same thing. That roar is just so freaking awesome. I get goosebumps every single time on and off ride!
I love the B&M roar, but there's just something about the sound Millennium Force makes on the final turn when it passes by the queue. And the little clank clank of the feed dogs on Gatekeeper when it goes through its inversions.
Can’t go wrong with the wooden coaster sounds as they rumble. I also like that roar of B&M coasters without sand in the tracks like Great Bear at Hershey.
For those who don’t want to watch the whole thing:
The clanking is the sound of the Anti-Rollback Device
Really creative and informative! I guess that's normal Coaster Bot so
Thank you, that's very kind. We were looking to try something a little different with this one :)
My favorite sound is Coaster Bot saying "What's your opinion."
Now that's a very good sound ;)
Superman at Six Flags Magic Mountain has the loudest sound I've heard on a roller coaster
i didn't do that ride because it was so F*CKING loud!!!! it's like a jet fighter flying by! oh and the click noises at "de vleermuis" in plopsaland de panne!
Superman sound is like a navy jet
My favorite sound is “All clear means you’re out of here, enjoy the ride!”
Thank you for explaining. I always thought it was a chain clicking under the train as it pulled it up the hill. Sounded like it was under way too much tension and always put me off. It all makes sense now you explained it and I feel much safer now I know what it really is 👍
No problem! I'm glad you feel safer now :)
Hard to top the pneumatic brakes activating on Six Flags Magic Mountain's Ninja roller coaster
Have you heard Superman?
Don't remember ever seeing such a thorough explanation of coaster sounds. Thanks Harry, Mr. Coaster Bot.
No problem, thanks for watching! :)
ASMR for coaster enthusiasts
My favourite sounds I’ve heard are Tarons launches and Mighty Canadian Minebuster roaring through the water park
4:08 who else remember that animation on his “roller coaster safety Explained” video??
That animation has been used in several videos now! ;)
B&M invert roars, or Kumba’s roar are my favorite sounds! Also love Voyage’s noise more than all other woodies noises!
Especially Montu’s roar, that one is insane
I love roller coaster sounds.
I love the sound of the roller coaster vehicle leaving the station with its “tsssssss” sound as it slowly clatters away. Along with the smells of the ride.
(I think I have a problem)
You don’t have a problem because I love that too
Not Bill Cosby
Nice. I thought it was just me.
I'm with you
That is perfectly describing one of my favorite sounds, but you left ort the beginning of a wooden coaster lift hill.
The majority of the coasters at my home park don't have that hiss as the train leaves the station (sadly).
Without a doubt the smiler is one of the best sounding rollercoasters
I agree!
No one:
Absolutely no one:
Not a single soul in heaven or hell:
Wooden coasters: *THROWS YOU SIDE TO SIDE GOING 5 MILES PER HOUR*
I love it!!!
Ive always been interested in what makes coaster sounds so exciting! This is such a great video
Omg the launch of taron is So amazing to listen to it just souds like a Ferrari going from 0 to 100 km/h
and it pretty much goes from 0 to 100 km/h aswell :D (i heard the top speed is 117 km/h after the 2nd launch)
I'm late by 2 years but I love how you let us listen to the roar instead of just explaining it. Top content👍
i love how each ride sounds so specific. i feel like i could identify every roller coaster at sf magic mountain (my home park) just based on their sound
Personally, I just love the sounds of the chain lifts on the old arrow and vekoma coasters. They're just... so satisfying.
Nemesis’s roar on that one corner is amazing
Love how the smiler sounds☺
Me too!
B&Ms coasters make a heavenly choir sound to my ears although the roar from coasters such as the smiler is also great!
The B&M roar is probably my favourite coaster sound.
Though I've never thought roar was the right word. To me it's more of an aggressive sigh.
That's the sound of a good ride.
Harry: "...it's the clank of visitors climbing up to a great height..." *shows ride with cable lift hill, which doesn't have the clanking noise*
Me: WHERE'S THE LOGIC IN THAT!?!?!
It was just a nice shot of a big lift hill! ;)
My favorite roller coaster sound by far is a b and m roar, especially raptor’s at cedar point when u are walking down the midway
Nice video! One of my favorite noises is when Skyrush's g forces make the back of the seats seem to vibrate; I don't know how to describe the sound! The drop on Skyrush also makes a cool sound!
i absolutely LOVE the sound of older B&M inverted coasters. they have such a crazy roar to them that can only be matched by B&M floorless coasters.
i also adore the sound Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain makes as it goes up the spike. its so loud and intimidating, i love it so much.
Great video Harry , really enjoyed this one .👌🏼My favourite has a special birthday on Tuesday........ Happy Birthday Nemesis, THE best sounding coaster . It has that unmistakable B&m roar but being in a huge crater its sound is enhanced so much more .... as if the beast is alive 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Thank you very much! Nemesis does sound fantastic, I couldn't agree more! :)
👌🏼👍🏽
You forgot the jet engine roar of a compressed air launch.
Any Gerstlauer coaster just sounds amazing. One of the best sounds I've heard omg
Magnum at Cedar Point, to me, has a pretty iconic lift hill sound. It's usually one of the first sounds I hear when we step out of the car in the hotel parking lot, and it always gets me super pumped!
Great video I found it really interesting and cool🤙🏻😀
Thank you, it means a lot! :)
To me any fairly recent B&M sound smooth and quiet. Just like you're floating on a cloud through the track.
On the other hand... I don't say no to an earbashing woodie =)
Great topic for a video! A clarification about the lsm sound: magnets don't make noise, the high pitch sound comes from the frequency of the current going into the stators similar to the hum of a cieling light. The low pitched vroom sound like taron's second launch comes from the train as it is pulled and pushed and vibrates. Keep up the great content!
Thanks! You're right, but that level of explanation was beyond the scope of this particular video. It is an interesting subject matter though! :)
My favorite sound is Xcelerator at Knott’s launch, I love the noise of the brake fins and the cables and the noise it makes when it shoots up the top hat, there is a restroom under its top hat so when the train launches the stalls shake
My favorite roller coaster sound is a schwartzkapf looper going through a vertical loop.
+1
Roger that!
Its a coasterporn for the ears
I'll help you: Schwarzkopf
True that. I rode Sooper Dooper Looper at HersheyPark and going through the inversion caused the most ear pain ever. But the screams from the crazy amount of GP was worse
We all know Raptor has the best sound on a coaster.
Which one is for again?
I love the sound of a arrow roller coasters lift
There's no sound quite like an Arrow lift.
wow loved this and it made us both aware of the sounds we had heard but not talked about, ie love the big one Blackpool but hate the drag up hill used to have eyes shut till lee tapped me on the shoulder and i knew to put hands up and enjoy, then i realised that the sound changed just as we reached the top and YAAAAAAh i can open my eyes and enjoy the ride ride without help , cheers
Awesome, glad you learnt something new! I'm not a huge fan of the climb up the highest point on the big one either! :)
Nemesis has the best noise by far!
Tarons 2nd launch is the best sound on any coaster
Have a reply (this is true tho).
Vintage Bricks it sounds the same as Maverick’s launch but Maverick’s is louder
Soaring with dragon's sounds freakin' epic
Listening to the ominous sound of the Incredible Hulk coaster going through its test runs in the dark of the morning before park opening is one of my favorite things to do while at Universa Orlando. The sound can be heard best from the Royal Pacific Hotel or out front. I've sat and listened to it many times. It seems to be the loudest B&M to me. I thought maybe it was intentional to sound like the roar of the Hulk.
Another great vid and I enjoyed it.
Maybe it is intentional, but B&Ms are just loud anyway! Thank you :)
@@coasterbot I absolutely love the sound of a good B&M coaster. The Hulk just happens to be the one I've consciously sat and listened to most. Sort of like the romantic soundtrack to a date with myself. lol
My favourite sound on any rollercoaster, and I've been to nearly all parks in America and Europe, has to be Nemesis at Alton Towers. The roar it makes is insane. It sound like the ride is alive and actually roaring!
I couldn't agree more, it is an insane sound! :)
Yeah the sound of the lift hill is pretty good, but why listen to that when you can listen to the mid-course!
My favorite noise is when the operator says “Disspatch”
O no you just dissed every ride op in existence
I didn’t know how badly i needed a video about this. So great.
ha ha thanks!
Great bear is my favorite roller coaster sound. It’s really cool to be walking along and all of a sudden it sounds like a bear is roaring past you. It’s really cool!
Running out of ideas? Lol! Still a great vid though. Keep up the good work Harry!
Thank you, that's very kind. We were looking to try something a little different with this one. We have plenty of ideas, trust me! :)
I mean he can always do What is videos about certain coasters so hopefully he won’t run out of ideas anytime soon
What is dragons apprentice
Nothin like a good old arrow clickity clackity lift 😩👌
I love hearing good ol Viper go up that hill
@@linknavi1 somebody mentioned Viper
Loved this video, thanks!! For a video about roller coaster sounds, I would have loved to hear longer clips of each discussed sound. Each clip in this video was around 1 second long - I would have loved to hear pure audio clips of 10+ seconds in length.
Thanks for watching! And you're right the audio could have been a little longer (I think 10 seconds would probably be too long though). This was our first video like this so you live and learn :)
The second Launch of Taron has a beautiful sound. Also, any B&M roar is perfect
My least favorite sound is the gp talking about roller coasters
Lol
What GP? Grandparent?
@@ethancooper3946 general public.
Once I talked about airtime and how it felt like you were gonna fly out of the seat, and someone out of nowhere said "THAT'S DANGEROUS!! IF YOU'RE A BAJILLION MILES IN THE AIR, AND YOU FALL OUT, YOU'LL BE DEAD!!!" Some GP can be so annoying.
I like Crabs Ikr
*Superman Escape from Krypton*
lol
That and Riddler's Revenge
This is awesome! Thank you so much for making this video! I think it's awesome to find out about the roller coaster sounds! Thanks for taking the time to create this video!
No problem, glad you liked it! Thanks for watching :)
Smiler because of the sounds when your going round the loops 😻 I love itttttt
The Smiler is awesome!
Stand up coasters have the best sounds! I love way the train let's go of the chain lift and the roar they make! Its awesome!
They really do roar! :)
One interesting thing you haven't mentioned about the hydraulic launches is the high pitched "pssssst" sound the emergency brakes make when they're released just before the launch. I thought it was one of the more defining aspects of the coaster type.
That whole sound can be extended to brakes in general, you can hear it at different locations on rides! :)
Heh, true. Now that I think about it, that comment was a bit oddly specific.
I love the B and M roar and when El Torro goes down the first drop and over the airtime hills. I also love a good old fashioned chain lift. I haven’t really heard kah launch yet.
My favorite sound has to be any of RMC’s lift hills but I love the roar that raptor makes
i love the sound of the train on Shiekra hitting the electromagnetic brakes. the whirr down is wonderful
My favorite roller coaster sounds have to be the Arrow chain lift, the wooden coaster chainlifts (especially PTC and GCI) , and also RMC! I also really like the LSM launches too! :)
Some of my favorite coaster sounds are the Arrow and some Vekoma chainlifts, the El Toro bull roar as it goes the airtime hills which is tied with the B&M roar, and the Arrow trims (I think).
The LSM launch on Flight of Fear is just an amazing sound, the combination whir and hum of the launch matches the theme so well while going into the tunnel. I love it. Also for some reason really like the anti-rollback sound on The Bat as well.
That does sound awesome!
@@coasterbot Whoops, I read that back, It was Flight of Fear, not Vortex, that ride wasn't LSM nor is it around anymore.
Great video idea, I always love the sound of roller coaster sounds. But, nothing can beat the sound of Red Force’s launch
Thank you! :)
Don't know why CZcams recommended me this video but it answered a lot of questions I didn't know I wanted the answer to.
I worked at Phantasialand for 6 weeks this summer and heard a lot of sounds there. My two favorites are: The roar of Black Mamba (which is not very loud (its filled with sand), but sounds great, like a purring kitten) and the launch of Taron (especially with the music swelling, then cutting off and the cranking/clicking sound effect they play just before you launch).
Phantasialands dispatch and launch sound are so fucking good
Love the sound of a LSM launch, dunno why. Great Video Again!
It's an awesome sound, and thank you! :)
i love the roar of gerstlauer infinity coasters, especially the smiler at alton towers. i also really like the sound of talon at dorney park at night when it's very quiet and all you can hear is the train flowing down the track and the soft roar
That's awesome, gersts sound great!
In my opinion you can’t beat the roar of the smiler!!! It’s soo iconic and sound beautiful
Wonderful and informative video. Love all the amazing content youre creating. Thank you.
Thank you for watching, and for the kind words! :)
Very interesting! I didn't know about the magnetic accelerator on some of the newer roller coasters! I haven't been to a theme park in like 5-10 years, I should go back :)
That second launch sound on Taron is unmatched
I love a B&M roar! In particular, Great Bear at HersheyPark roars over pedestrian walkways in a few spots. When my son was small enough that I could carry him on my shoulders, the train flew by when we were in the perfect roar spot. He...didn't appreciate it so much.
ha ha I can imagine why he didn't like it! ;)
Great video, never knew coaster sounds could be so interesting
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Excellent video Harry! My favourite sound is by far Intamin's anti - rollback fins lowering before launch! By far one of the most exciting sounds on these rides
Thank you very much! :)
The tinkeling of the motors of B&M en the roar when the train pass by. Nothing beats that.
One of my favourite roller coaster sounds is the lift hill of Dreamcatcher at Bobbejaanland. I know it's not a good ride, but when I hear that sound, it's just nostalgia. I just ride this thing for that sound. Especially when it hits the chain at the beginning, love it!
I love that classic Arrow Dynamics sound. The lift hill and launch from their shuttle loopers are quite unique.
I agree! :)
This is an amazing video. Good job Harry!
Thank you very much! :)
First of all, I love your physics episodes. Second of all, here are some of my favourite coaster sounds:
- old B&M roar like on Dragon Khan
- Intamin LSM Launch like on Taron and Red Force
- Schwarzkopf Loopings like on Psyké Underground (there the sound is even amplified for the rider because it's indoor and it's really freaking loud)
- woodies like Troy... I just love the sound of a woodie roaring across its track
- lift hills on woodies
I love the physics episodes too! There are some great sounds there :)
Can you please just make a video dedicated to various roller coaster sounds?? This video was lowkey a turn on. 😍😍😍🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Favourite sound, by far, is specifically the sound of the hollow square tracks. I love the noise Nemesis makes as it swoops through the valley
I couldn't agree more!
I love the sounds the vekoma boomerang makes, so much mechanisms
