- When it comes to roller coasters everyone has heard of the loop de loop. But have you heard of a cobra roll, a bunny-hop, or even a zero-G roll? Believe it or not, these are all names of roller coaster elements, just like the humble vertical loop. Today, roller coasters can do a huge number of unique things, most of which have their own special name. In this video we'll explore the most common elements found on roller coasters, including it's name and how it can be identified.

My favorite element is the mid-couse brakerun
will s What’s the best mid course. My favorites Cali- I mean Incredicoaster
@@worldwidewrestling2639 my favorite is the one on titan at SFOT. It's so awesome how it kills all your momentum.
lol /s
Thats funny Will. You must work for B&M.
World Wide Wrestling my favorite is the beast at kings island because yeah
I feel like this video is preparing me for an exam with all these definitions and explanations and what not 😂
I'll give you all the exam in 2 weeks time, get studying! ;)
COASTER BOT I’ll have John Wardley help me through it via a hidden ear piece :)
Actually it’s not a bad idea for a video series. Quiz yourself multiple choice questions 🎢
COASTER BOT you should do that, make a quiz on things you have covered on the channel about roller coaster function, restraints, safety mechanisms, element names, and so on.
COASTER BOT Yes please!
I quite like the 270 degree double inverting coner stall
Also known as 270° DICS
Legible formula my favourite as well
@Vlek How about we just call it the 270* DICKS then?
Yea it's really cool. It's found on UNTAMEND
Untamed* yea untamed only has good elements xd
The banana roll needs to be utilized more often.
Also, the Phoenix’s double-up-down.
No it need to be unique
Most definitely!
Nah, we need more... (Looks at RCDB) Kick...flips?
Soem Random Dude lmao insert a THPS combo and call it a roller coaster element
xRGTMx White Lightning at Fun Spot America (Orlando) has this one and it has lots of airtime.
I have heard of a *lööp*
Nah fam I’ve heard of a *lööpd3lööp*
Bröther, I need the Lööps.
Coaster Fusion hi coaster fusiön
What about loch ness monster's *interlocking lööps?*

All my friends : "YOU GO UPSIDE DOWN ON A LOOP SND LIKE LOOP 5 TIMES WOAH"
Me being a rollercoaster enthusiast : "Uhm that's what you call a Cobra roll, Zero-G roll, corkscrew, dive loop and a heartline roll"
Jake Groves
1. Cobra Roll
2. Zero G Roll
3. Corkscrew
4. Dive Loop
5. Heartline Roll
Ikr and then they all look at you like your fricking insane
@@PianoBoyLiam This video counts the cobra roll (one element) as two inversions though, or going upside-down two times
(Your username looks cool in blue, by the way)
@@samuelitooooo yeah I guess I wasn’t thinking that through lmao, thanks btw
Your friends are Blobb. "LOOPDY LOOP!! WHEEEE!!"
Thank god someone FINALLY explained the difference between an inline twist and a heartline roll
No problem, thanks for watching :)
@@coasterbot whats the difference between them ?
@@eylon951 …bruh
@@eylon951 heartline roll: rotates around an imaginary point
inline twist: rotates along the track's center spine
And I always see people confusing heartline rolls with corkscrews... because it looks more like a corkscrew than the ACTUAL corkscrew element 😂
I like the chainlift. Probably the scariest part of the ride.
LeothePianoMan _this better be ironic_
isnt he right? you are scared on the Lifthill the most lol
Donschnulione I find certain inversions like the cobra roll and head/foot choppers more scary personally
Breakrun is heavier...
I can relate, I'm extremely scared of height but at the same time I love roller coasters, the lift hill is always the scariest part for me.
I really like the 0g roll. I know it’s really common, but I love that no matter how many times I do it l never know what to expect
Zero-g rolls are great!
I absolutely love Stengel dives
Honorable mentions: Pretzel Loop on Tatsu and Raven turns on X2
Hear! Hear! both are at my homepark
Absolutely - both very unique sensations.
Don’t forget the Top Gun Stall in Twisted Collosus
Steven Schiro YES!!
Two of my favorite coasters at Magic Mountain!
The zero-G roll is my favorite element.
Gabriel Díaz righttt🤩
I like cobra rolls 😊
Me to. And an imalmen
It is a great one!
zero g stalls imo
Zero-G Rolls rule. And the double inverting stall on Untamed
270 degree Double Inverting Corner Stall its basically a Lagoon roll on a hill and on a corner curve of the layout
Cameron Goldthorpe *on steroids
The non-inverting sea-serpent roll has to be my favorite element.
Oh yeah, that's a great element!
You mean the octopus arm?
would you like a corked roll? a tip-out corner? or a twist n' shout? or even a 270° double inverting corner stall?
the person who can name all coasters those elements are found on gets a cookie
the double inverting corner stall can be found on untamed, the twist n shout is a rollercoaster in itself, i think a tip out corner can be found on mumbo jumbo at flaming land, and I think the corked roll element can be found on the smiler as it's first element although I could be wrong
@@GLXYFPV you got one right
@@vzs01 whoop! I honestly don't know the rest.
Corked roll: Storm chaser
Tip out corner: Storm chaser
Twist and shout: lightning rod
270° double inverting corner stall: untamed
I think I deserve a Cookie ;-)
@@zuzelino5889 yes you get a cookie. 🍪
The pretzel loop is my favourite element.
i prefer the churro loop myself
I love the bat wing on the smiler and the 2 airtime hill!
Me too!

A lot of enthusiasts talk about the Double Flippity Whippy Slippy on Untamed as one of the best elements out there, but you can't forget the *a linguistic representation of the guitar solo from Pink Floyd's Money* on Firechaser Express. Personally, i'm all about a good Slithering Snaker Side to Side like on Maverick or Copperhead Strike.
NovaScienceNever the linguistic representation of pink floyds money is one of the most intense elements ever.
@@Sam-il5yw you have to put the asterisks on both ends, otherwise you'd be disgracing David Gilmour's guitar solo. That element can only be represented etymologically by every single note in that section of the song.
I don't know how I feel about this
I've always had trouble Identifying certain elements. I've found myself calling all the inverting elements "barrel rolls" except for the loop or simply "inversions"
The reversed cobra roll on twisted cyclone is the best in my opinion
That element looks cool!
I love how informative CZcams is lol
There’s literally a whole CZcams community for coasters haha
I think the Lagoon Roll on Cannibal is quite unique. It’s a double heartline roll that reverses it’s twist halfway through.
It definitely is!
Even as an enthusiast, I once heard the term “Negative G Stall Loop” and thought it was a joke.
(Good video btw)
Thanks :)
basically a normal loop that's approached with insufficient speed and leads to riders hanging from their seats at the top of the loop?
@@larsfroelich I rode one like that! It was scary, I thought I was gonna fall out of my seat lol
Am I the only one who was partially laughing? Cuz I lost it at 7:46 lol. I love this video.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! ;)
I think heartline rolls are the most satisfying element for me, but I also really like off-axis airtime hills! With both elements, I LOVE watching the train go through them.
Heartline rolls are extremely awesome!
I kinda take a liking to the heartline roll. Its just rly interesting and its also the main part of what is probably my favorite ride overall (Cheetah Hunt). Bunny hills and their more extreme siblings (i forget the name lol) are also rly fun and I cant help but laugh every time. Good example being Mako
Edit: idk if it would just be considered a normal but i also love that one special loop thing on Manta. Its so interesting when your in that position
Heartline rolls are a lot of fun! You're talking about the pretzel loop on Manta, they're meant to be one of the most intense roller coaster elements out there!
Heartline rolls always add good diversity to rides
Great coverage. I would also add a note on how a lot of the element types and styles were tied to their manufacturers. For example, how the original Boomerang was made by Arrow and commonly became referred to as the "Arrow Boomerang" despite the first installation in the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun referring to it as the "Kamikaze Curve". Then there was the Vekoma Boomerang which gave birth to the B&M Cobra Roll. Also, Arrow's boomerang was comprised of two "sidewinders" and one installation had the second sidewinder exiting the opposite side of the prevailing direction of travel, resulting in the "Bowtie" element on Dragon Mountain from 1983. Admittedly, the more that element design became more fluid and versatile, and thus less modular, the differences between the manufacturers have dissipated and aren't as clear cut as they were from 1975 through about 1991.
Gotta say, thank you for this video! Ever since I started getting into roller coasters on CZcams I've heard all of these element names. They all sounded exotic and in a way inaccessible to someone like me who has a limited knowledge of roller coasters in general. This really simplified it all for me and helped me better understand these element names and what they look like. I have to admit I'm still learning these terms and I'll probably be referring to this video a bunch when I watch roller coaster reviews. Thanks again!
No problem, there's definitely a lot of jargon out there so it can be heard to learn the terms! Best of luck with your roller coaster learning - thanks for watching :)
I love the Hive Dive and also the Lagoon Roll. Hive dive gives amazing airtime *somehow*, and I love the hang time on the Lagoon Roll.

No problem, thanks for watching! :)
Ive been sick all day but this video made me smile
I hope you get well soon!
COASTER BOT thank you
This was really fun to watch. The cobra roll is the first element that I ever experienced riding a coaster-on the Hulk at Universal in Orlando.
I don't know why but it makes my day hearing coasterbot saying 'banana'
The banana roll is the best element
Damn here I thought loop de loop was just another way people would call just a standard loop but making it seem intense. Well good thing Viper has it!
The only ride I've been on with a sea serpent roll is Medusa at Discovery kingdom, which gives a surprising amount of lateral gs for a floorless. Great ride, despite the lack of theming.
I've been dying for a video like this! I've seen so many of your videos and I've been trying to learn by context
I'm glad you liked it, thanks for watching and wanting to learn! :)
Amazing video! Good refresher to everything I learned from RCT3 haha
just chillin over here with taron in my homepark... overbanked turns all the way
We went to Six Flags for a Physics trip, and we literally had to these type of analysis
That's awesome! :)
Nice vid Harry!
Thanks!
@@coasterbot np
thanks so much for this. I watch these rollercoaster videos all the time but cannot always wrap my head around even some of the commonly used elements. thanks!
No problem, thanks for watching! I'm glad you're able to learn from these :)
My favorite element has got to be the simple corkscrew. Put a corkscrew and a turn right after it and I don’t know what’s going on for the rest of the ride. I don’t quite grey out but it’s always the corkscrews that catch me off guard… batman the ride and nighthawk for example.
I also love heartline rolls. They’re just epic and add great diversity to rides. They look cool too
Wow! I need to watch this multiple times to get all these elements clear in my head. Great idea for a video. Thanks.
I hope they're clear now, thanks for watching :)
I find this video so interesting and i loved the way you explained them!
Hey that's awesome to hear, thanks for the kind words!
@@coasterbot of course! I love your channel
Yes, I’ve been waiting for this!
"Due to the nature of this ride, 2 trains can navigate at the same time"
*shows the smiler*
Even smiler can navigate 2 trains.
RIP
The double corkscrew at the end of Smiler needs more praise… it’s so whippy and intense!
In RCT3, there’s an element on the Hypercoaster known as the Figure 8 loop. Shame such a thing doesn’t exist on real coasters :/
3:45 hey smiler you doing a good job!!!!!
My fave is definitely the mini roll
I love a good Cadbury's mini-roll too! ;)
My favorite is the breakdown on the lift hill
I was one of the last people to go on The Swarm when it ran a set of backwards seats on the end of the train. Went with some friends, they all sat in the front facing row, I sat on my own, literally, on my own, in the backwards seat. It was a completely different ride, 100% more amazing than facing forward
Really? I always found backwards seats to be boring, they took the fun of the near misses out of the ride!
If I had to name a favorite element I'd pick Shambhala's ampersand turn, not necessarily from the ride experience its shape is just so memorable
Incredible video as usual, I find it perfect to initiate curious friends to the basics while pointing at what's left to explore I love it
YES! I needed this coaster video. I design coasters and do POV's but I never know 80% of the names of everything haha. I'm going to watch this video 10 times so I remember everything! Thanks for making this! You published this on my Birthday also which is ironic :P SUBSCRIBED!
Sometimes I think you guys are making these names up!! Fantastic video, Harry!
Honestly someone has to be making them up! Thank you :)
My favourite is the cobra roll in the front seat on Colossus. Especially when you exit out the cobra roll, it's a great feeling.
Also some good elements include the outward banked turn on Icon, zero G roll on Nemesis Inferno, and the ejector airtime hill on Icon.
Great Video Thank You!
No problem, thanks for watching :)
Awesome footage.
My favourite element has to be the duelling Staffordshire Knot as it feels great to go through and can provide absolutely excellent views/photo chances from off-ride.
It is easily one of the most visually impressive elements for sure!
Very informative video!
Thank you :)
Idk why people say cobra rolls are rough. I have very pleasant experiences on them...
screams cobra roll at sfmm is rough but silver bullets at knots isn’t so it depends which ride i think
It's because they're largely used on old vekoma coasters such as Boomerangs and Some SLC's.
@@spark3395 yeah.
@Coaster Fusion the one on the smiler is mad! Part of an excellent finale in my opinion!
What an amazing video! 👏🏻
Thank you! :)
I love Smiler and was great to see it appear so many times in this great video. She really has it all.
The Smiler is an awesome coaster!
So much footage is from the smiler. I love that ride
the stengel dive is my favorite element
My favourite elements are probably ejector airtime hills and dive loops. I don't really like cobra rolls...
Yeah cobra rolls can be a little jerky and the transitions out of it can be rough, but they are amazing to look at.
@@TheEpicWalrus you're totally right!
I'd agree with those two, both are awesome!
top 5 favorite elements
-sustained ejector hill
-stengel dive
-zero g roll
-hydraulic or compressed air launch
-rapid changes in direction / blackout turns
omg thats why maverick is my favorite roller coaster
Hey don't forget the Rollover ! It starts with a half loop, then the half of a heartline roll that puts riders back to normal. Then an other half heartline roll that turns riders upside down and finaly a half loop !
One of my favorite inversions is the cutback loop first seen on the infamous Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.
I now know about the different kinds of airtime hills and the different between a Heartline Roll and an Inline Twist, thanks Harry ;)
No problem, thanks for watching :)
My favourite Element is the 270 degrees Double inverted corner stall. And the Name is insane too!
My favorite video of yours! 😊
Awesome to hear, I'm glad you like it! :)
Your videos are amazing
Thank you that means a lot :)
Amazing video
Thank you! :)
My favorites are zero g stalls and rolls. They are very fun on thunderbird! They give a lot of hang time and what feels like airtime. Storm chasers inversions are epic! The first drop is crazy. It’s very fun and gives airtime, and then there is ejector hills!
Wow I just wrote an essay on coasters... 😂
Both of those two are awesome, I couldn't agree more! :)
The engineers: Which elements do you want?
The Smiler: Yes.
Coaster Enthusiast: I like stengel dives, over banks, and outer banks
GP: A corkscrew
Lagoon roll is pretty awesome essentially 3/4 of a heartline roll followed by 3/4 heartline the opposite direction traversed while going fairly slow.
Cut back, wave turn, camel back, outer back, Stengel dive, horse shoe, junior imelmen loop, raven turn, Norwegian loop, pretzel knot, splash down, bunny hop, speed hill, the treble clef, sidewinder wing over drop, death roll, non inverting imelmen loop, dive loop stall 🙃
hell yeah
massive airtime hills on apollo's chariot, 0g, and cobra roll on alpengeist, Immelmann, and corkscrews.
My favorite element is the trim brake, I love how it always kills your momentum on a lot of rides. Am I alone here?
my favorite element is the "drop off of a trimless mid course brake run in the back row"
Isn’t that one of those mythical elements that coaster parents tell their kids about? That the magical ride operator might bestow upon them but only if they’re well behaved all day.... 😉✨🎢
My favorite element: Coaster bot
The Sidewinder will always be my favourite, for whatever reason. The Heartline Roll is a close second, though.
I am going to watch this every day until I am a true coaster elements buff 😍
I hope that happens sooner rather than later then! ;)
The Zero-G Winder (found on Taiga, the first inversion) is my fave!
That element looks awesome!
Yay I found a coaster/Splatoon enthusiast! Nice!
I am all for anything that makes a great coaster ride experience and gives lots of airtime.
The zero-g roll, the zero-g stall, and the ejector hill are some of my favorite elements.
Those are all very awesome for sure :)
Lagoon roll, Maxx dive, and Untamed's 270° double-inverting corner stall seem to open a new trend in inversion design. I wonder what would come next. Quad-inverting pretzel knot, perhaps?
Dive loops/ Immelmann Rolls, using an inversion to essentially turn on a dime and drop is so fun.
I agree!
my fav is a dive loop or non inverted is an overbanked helix
The transitions in this video are very smooth like an RMC's
Thanks! :)
Thank you for making this! I’m a coaster enthusiast but some of these get mixed up in my head😂
No problem, thanks for watching and learning! :)
I can't get over the Staffordshire knot, especially when in sync on the smiler
Well i really really want to build a theme park in the future so this quite helpful!
I love zero g stalls and the hangtime they give! :)
I love the pretzel loops on B&M flyers. The best example is the one on Tatzu at Six Flags Magic Mountain. To get the best effect, ride in the very back row.
I imagine the force is relentless in the back row!
Pretzel loop is my favourite…it’s just so sudden and intense
zero-g roll, immelmans, corkscrews, heartline rolls, and the legendary cobra rollll
