- This video explains the most common question I have received over the last 9 years. Why does my radio turn itself on when I start my Subaru? #subaru, #subaruradio, #subaruoutback, #subaruforester, #subaruascent, #subaruimpreza, #subarucrosstrek, #subarusettings, #subarufeatures, #subaruschool.

Thanks for the info, this was a minor annoyance, which I now understand better.
Great info! Thanks Evan!
If you hold down the 'Source' button on the steering wheel for a few seconds, it will turn the radio off, and it will remain off when you restart the car.
True, but that trick only works on the new 11.6 inch screen. It doesn't work on the older 8 inch screens like the one in the video.
I don't know the year cutoff, but it works on my 2024 Impreza BASE model with 7.5" screen.
The 24 Impreza will have the new system just like the 11.6inch screen@@thomashardy5524
Friend has a 2023 Subaru Forrester that won't allow you to do anything until the startup splash screen does its annoying thing. Left your radio on when you got out? Sorry, can't turn it down or off....yet...And if you put it in reverse...sorry, backup camera doesn't let you use the controls or knob either. Shift back to park and then wait out the startup screen to be able to turn your volume down....seriously.
Why have a knob that doesn't always work?
And it will start playing from the phone, not the radio. It starts to autoplay whatever you were listening to last on your iPhone. Even if the phone is quiet and you're not listening to it before starting the car, on car startup, it starts playing form your phone.
It's a very bad design that doesn't seem to be getting any better, and probably worse, as time and model years move on. It is the number one complaint....why don't they fix it? It's not doing what people expect.
I don’t listen to the radio. I have my favorite cds on a flash drive playing on media. I want it to start up when I start the car.
I'm amazed how little I see people using the flash drive option
