I have one that's made of the non broken parts of the one I had in HS and the parts I didn't loose from the one I got in college. I mean ... it's custom... priceless... irreplaceable!
i unscrewed mine and it never went back together properly. it may be wobbly, the tips is blunted and the stretching mechanism makes a weird squeaking noise, but it got me through GCSEs

Compasses feel like the coolest goddamn tool until you get to the second half of the circle and you have to fight off demons and survive earthquakes for it to be the same quality the whole way through
I saw one review of the cheaper one that just added little nubs to the bottom to get it to stick (like the ones on the inside of your cabinets). That’d probably work quite well for anyone on a budget!

The compass was first used by the ancient Greeks and it was one of the to object you needed to make every geometric object known to the Greeks the other one being a ruler with no divisions!
In German we call the compass a Zirkel. Growing up I never knew it was used for map related things because all I ever used it for (and had to use it for at school) was making circles XD
The compass' original purpose (at least in ancient Greece) was geometry, as the compass and the straightedge were (and still are) the only necessary tools for doing (Euclidean) geometry, based on Euclid's postulates. Afterwards, since Geometry is incredibly useful as a field, its methods "leaked" to other places as well. So yeah, pretty much that's the main purpose of the compass, to make circles The Greek word for the compass is "διαβήτης" (diavitis). And yes, it's where the name of diabetes comes from. It literally means "the one who passes through", because the shape of the compass is like two legs that you can pass through (which is why the word literally also means "the one who has open legs").

You have a record, my go to is a roll of painter's tape that I don't use for it's intended purpose anymore bc it had reached the perfect size for my use 😂 I have a compass and templates too but that roll of tape is just too magical✨

I guess it has mostly to do with which size of paper you are most comfortable drawing on, which is why his go to is bigger than mine (I draw on way smaller paper than he does). I use it for a simple one-color backdrop for characters I drew. When the character design is the main focus you just need a simple *something* for the background sometimes, since having a person/creature on blank paper looks odd. It keeps the cost of commissions down too since there's no complicated background :)

I only draw illustrations at home, so no need to take anything with me :) Its also not about mistakes or imperfections, just a really quick way to draw a circle, since I don't want to bother freehanding it at larger scales, my perfectionism would kick in and I would spend unnecessary time trying to make it look better.

The compass you shown was a draftsman tool called a 'Quick-acting Giant Bow' compass. They're similar to the typical center wheel giant bow sets, but have a different thread pitch which allows you to move the arms with your hands like you shown, while a typical center wheel can only be adjusted by turning the wheel.
Those things are mandatory Tools in German math class, we learn to use them in your equivalent of middle school. I use mine from decades ago for my art. ☺️

In India you can get a best quality compass for $2. I am last year CSE undergrad student so I have close relationship with math my whole life and never have I saw a compass costing more than $2. In school my friends used a 40 cents compass. By having this context about me you can clearly imagine what where my thoughts when he said the compass is just for $27. Heck I bought whole year worth of stationary for $27.
I literally have a cheap compass I found at school in the hallway back when I went to school. It was cracked where it'd hold a pencil but i took it home then glued the crack to fix it I kept it ever since even though I rarely use it anymore. If I need to draw a circle while at home I pull out my tape roll collection to draw them if needed. Most of the time I don't need to draw a perfect circle as I can rough sketch a circle even if it's not perfect. I draw My Little Pony and I usually start with a basic cirlce that doesn't have to be perfect when drawing them. The circle will be erased as i draw them so I don't have to worry too much about them being absolutely perfect.
I use two pencils and a paper clip. I use various paper clips of various sizes and bent into various shapes. The pencil use as the center can also make a light dot in the middle of the circle :)
When I was a kid I used to draw cool little cartoony 2 dimensional lowrider cars and I used pocket change for the circles. Now that I’m grown and dabble in drawing and tattoos I now know the struggle of the perfect circle.

They sell versions with a little screw to lock its position into place. That type might be better for you.

I use sticky backed craft foam for everything. I use it to back my coffee cozies that I make, so I have a ton of scraps laying around.

Honestly, try to look at your reference in values. Choose 4-6 values to use, from lightest to darkest, and just follow the reference.
