      Same! I'm running a 3/16 peep on a 2" sight housing and have about a 1/2-3/4" halo around the housing. I've been trying to center the housing and been doing alright at it but it takes added time to line up the shot. Never occurred to me to just set it to top center and work at it that way. Smh such a simple yet very effective solution. Can't wait to go try it out and see the improvement

    I understand the concept, but I’m a bow hunter , I don’t shoot comp anymore, 1/4” peep at dusk and dawn trumps 1/8 or 3/16 in deer hunting! I’ve shot deer out to 53yds with my 1/4” peep all the way to 5 yards and all in between!

  • @coryedd3783
    @coryedd3783 Před rokem

    Good video but rifle shooters shooting peeps would have the same problem but the theory is the brain naturally centers the front sight in the rear peep. That’s how a practiced shooter can hit consistently at 100+ yards with a peeped rifle. I would think the same should apply here. I shoot a large 1/4” hunters peep and have for years. When I get my anchor I just relax and let my brain center the front pins right in the center just like when I shoot my 30-30 which is peeped as well. I have had no issue shooting groups at 30-40 yards that have arrows slapping each other. I don’t do target btw.

  • @smau990
    @smau990 Před 3 lety

    But what happens when you hunt and it starts to get dark, eye pupil opens up and the peep blurs out more so what your eye considers edge of the peep changes. You can change a peep without a press too, just put two smooth round plastic objects in the triangles above and below the peep and plop out the old one. Sharpie marker is perfect size and shape for the job.

    Great video and content. Somewhat related to this, have you ever done a video on recommendations and pros & cons around how far to position your sight from the riser? With today's dovetail mounts such as my Black Gold Ascent Verdict, I hear some people say push the sight out as far as it'll go, and then others say to keep it closer to the riser. There seems to be a lot of differing opinions.

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  Před 3 lety

      Like I state in the video, you have two options: move your sight to match your peep, or change your peep to match your sight, and push your sight out relatively far. The latter is the preferred method as accuracy is best achieved with your aiming points farther way from each other. However, for the normal bowhunter at home, moving the sight in and out to match their already chosen peep size is much easier to accomplish.

    I shoot field archery and have located my peep to be centered when my sight is dialed to 40 yards as that is the mid point between my max and min yardage that I have to shoot for field. This means when I shoot at 10 or 70-80 yards my peep isn’t centered on my scope housing. Are you saying that the peep sight should always be centered on your scope housing? I can see that for a hunting setup at shortened range of distances but it doesn’t seem to work when there is a large range of distances.

Am I supposed to be seeing the entire green housing or should the green part be covered up and if I see it then I know I'm not aligned properly? I was using a 3/16" peep, but couldn't see any of the green so I moved up to a 1/4", but now I see daylight around my sight housing which got me thinking what exactly am I supposed to see through the sight? Moved the sight closer to me on the riser, but still see daylight around the housing. Depending on what should see I was either going to move back to 3/16" or try a 7/32" peep. Thoughts? When you set your peep height for a distance lets say 50 yards, how do you set your sight tape up because at 100 yards without changing your anchor point the sight is completely out of frame. Better yet, use a single pin - then you can ignore the front scope/sight housing all together and just center the pin with your peep.
    Use a small peep and your brain will automatically want to centre the pin.

      Yes, it can be. If you can't see the ring of your sight housing, the peep is too small.

    I like to use a large peep for the light gathering ability. My sight housing has nothing to do with my aiming process. I never look at my level, either. If I don’t get too lazy, I usually remove the level.

    Thanks for your tip! But I got a question here, the peep size looks different under different lighting, it's much smaller under sunshine and much bigger in dawn or evening, if align the top edge, the angle will be different, and might be shooting high in darker situations?

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  Před 3 lety

      Only practice will tell you that! I find that when that happens with me, my ability to shoot distance also shrinks. The closer the shot as light fades or gathers, means wider margin of error for accuracy with a peep that isn't perfectly aligned. I find for me especially, I have a bad left-right alignment the darker it gets. I'll group left by ~2-3" at 30 yards but the time legal light has completely expired.

    Old video but got a question, I got a new Mathews v3x at 66lbs 29.5 inch draw. Noticing when i draw back and look through my peep I can see my cables off to the right side of the peep. Guy at shop said it’s normal but any bow I have ever had( Hoyt turbo, reign 7, prime centergy) I NEVER have seen the cables before. I aim using the sight system that lets the dove tale go inside the riser. Not sure if that matters or not but it’s really weird! Is this normal??

    • @1william89
      @1william89 Před 2 lety

      @@averagejackarchery It got the standard from the shop when I got it, checked timing, got my peep in, aligned the rest, paper tuned,although I wasn’t satisfied with the paper as it’s ever slightly tearing knock right. Tech said there’s not much to do for it since Mathews has a certain yolk system and since I don’t have the integrated rest I can move the rest much further. So idk I might have to take it to a Pro shop, usually I tinker with it as much as I can without a bow press.

    Please stop. You have no clue how a peep works. You do not align in around the housing. Old sights back in the day had no housings. Rifle sights had a bladed front sight with a brass bead on top. No front government like a target rifle. The peep is simply to look through. Your BRAIN centers it for you. You just look at the pin you plan to use and your brain does the rest. All you CZcamsrs are telling this all wrong. You need to be old like me to understand how peeps work. You all need some peep education.
    Let me explain. By aligning the peep hole around your sight housing, the one ok. That will be the clearest is the one closest to the center of the housing. This is why you are to just look through that hole and pick the pin you plan to use and stare at it and your target. Then forget the peep is even there. Please, please get educated on how a peep works before you get everyone who follows you t hi inking you are right, and we end up with thousands of archers doing it wrong, and doing another step they don’t have to do.

    • @averagejackarchery
      @averagejackarchery  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Old housings couldn't have peep alignment, rifles aren't bows, and modern technology has drastically allowed better accuracy across the board with modern target scopes and sight housings. I don't know of a single competitive archer that changes the anchor position of the peep to center it around a pin. If they do, good for them! But us remaining mortals will continue to shoot this way with tremendous success.
