    To start off…
All dogs need to wear off their energy. Its not just chocolate labs. Second, all dogs should be socialized at a young age and your dog isn’t gonna be aggressive because you didn’t show it a donkey or a chicken.

    • @A.O865
      @A.O865 Před 2 lety +4

To add on… any dog can get separation anxiety. It isn’t just a chocolate lab thing. They’re not born with it. They develop it. Their size can vary depending on what kind of lab you want. American labs are smaller in size and more athletic. English labs are bulky and bigger weighing more on the 100s side while American can weigh as low as 60-70s and still be healthy just do to their athleticism.

I had a Chocolate Lab for 9 yrs. He was very loyal and was raised as a puppy along with a Great Dane puppy. They loved each other. They had different personalities. My lab lived for his two balls
    that we played with.
I would throw one ball and he could catch the ball no matter how I threw it. Then he would drop it and get ready for the second ball. Then he would pick both balls up in his mouth and bring them back to me and we could do this all day long. On the way back he would run past my great Dane to show him that he caught both balls. The neighbor's would tell me that he would make an excellent short stop in a baseball game. Lol. Okay, now I'd like to explain just one downfall he had.
He didn't care how he caught the ball. He would barrel through anything just to make contact with the ball.
So therefore he got hurt a lot. He would jump as high as he could to catch the ball in mid air so I was carefully how I threw the balls . I never saw him get hurt but suddenly he would start limping. Most times after I threw one of the balls I would turn to my great Dane and play with him.
My lab blew out both his knees .But not
    at the same time.
    So the first back leg
    was operated on and
    cost an unexpected
amount of money for this ACL operation and
a long and careful amount of time for him
to heal. A year later his other back leg did the same thing and now we were headed for another operation.
    I'm now into $3,000.
    dollar's that it cost to
have his both back legs operated on. This took a big toll on my savings account. I really didn't care because I would do anything for him.
    He played so hard that
    my Vet said , he's a
very strong dog so I had to stop the games
    and leash him for
    basically three months
Of therapy and not have him run or pull at
any time during his healing. He did great
    and after his hair grew
back fully , I would start with easy ball playing. So I grounded every throw as not to let him jump and he gladly followed my rules . A year later we went through it again.
He was now healed and things were finally back to normal. Both times my G. Dane would wait for him to come home after each operation and would take care of his long time companion by laying with him and would actually stop him at times he would
get restless and start walking around the house and we would watch him closely when someone would come to the door. He would barrel to the door and get too excited during his healing process.
As he turned 9 yrs old
and healthy as can be ,
he would Moan when he lied down or got up.
This was strange for me to hear. Then a few weeks later he started throwing up his food.
I noticed the food was still whole and not digested . Three days later he stopped eating. This was a
    RED FLAG for me.
When our Vet took an x-ray he had an obstruction in his digestive system.
The Vet said he has to operate immediately
on him. ( I saw the x-ray) After the other tests , the Vet couldn't
get the obstruction to move through his intestines. I looked at
my lab and I hugged him and told him I loved him and that I will be back to bring him home. During his operation the Vet found it wasn't an obstruction. It was a
    Kink in his intestines.
    Our long time Vet
    unraveled the kink
and successfully closed him up and
    he went to recovery.
    The girl technician
would call his name as to wake him up gently.
He looked at her a wagged his tail. Then
their rule was to check on him every 10 minutes. When she went to check him again he was dead.
She freaked out and yelled to the Doctor for help. They couldn't bring him back. We got
the call at home from our Vet that he died and the rest was history. We never said goodbye and his buddy companion was waiting for him to come home like several times before.
We went back to see him and they laid him out on the table with a beautiful blanket on him but didn't cover his face . The Vet even cried along with us
as he gave us time alone with him. I never
brought him home like many times before. It was a day later when my great Dane after seeing my family &
neighbor's coming over and crying that he realized his buddy wasn't coming home.
    He died of a runaway
blood clot that went straight to his heart
    In the recovery room.
SO...... The point I'm making is that my lab would play so hard at 110 % that it caused him to get hurt a number of times
during the 9 yrs I had him. They are so loyal to the games they play
outside with the family that you have to watch
that they don't play too hard because they don't understand that
    they can get severely
    hurt. So beware ,...
    they are excellent dogs
but need to be watched because they'll play until they exhaust themselves.
I hope my comment shed some enlightenment on raising Chocolate Labs. I love them.

I LOVE how honest this channel is.. Most other channels are only showing the positive sides that a certain breed has.. OR you get channels with breeds like Mallinois, Dutch shepherd .etc.. Where they are warning about the breed but not without bragging about how cool they are and how good they are with dogs ( even though they are not able to train these breds without a ecollar or a prong) since THEY can own one but YOU can not. This is one of the most ridiculous videos I’ve ever seen. I’ve had many Labradors, chocolate, yellow and black and Ive noticed no difference in their behaviour or needs. All dogs need training when they are young. All young dogs are curious. Yellow and black labs are also “old hunting dogs”. Any dog can suffer separation anxiety. Chocolate labs are no more prone to it than any other colour lab or dog for that matter. All labs shed! I actually find the yellow ones are the worst. All dogs need socialising. To make out these requirements and behaviours are any worse in chocolate labs is silly. I showed my vet this video and he rolled his eyes and laughed saying this video is basically listing the requirements of any large dog. These are not traits specific to chocolate labs.

  • @Oxter
    @Oxter Před 10 měsíci

Just coming up to 11 months getting Finn as a 2 month old and I'd agree with all of those, choc labs are very rewarding and really smart, which is something the video didn't mention.
    My thoughts so far:
He has grown up to be a big, powerful dog and needs lots of exercise.
He is very friendly and great around other dogs, big or small.
He also poops - a lot! So glad I got him house trained early, he is a poop factory...
He is very loving and loyal, he usually never leaves my side when out for walks, but will dash away if something exciting happens (like a bird taking off or a leaf falling).
He loves, more than anything, getting soaking wet and/or covered in wet mud so make sure you have a cleaning station set up at home after walks.

I was 8 years old when I got my first dog, I'm not sure what breed it was, it bit my ear once, and one time it bit my foot, nobody told me at 8 years old to not accidentally step on a dog's tail while it was eating its bone. I named him tequila, I later found out he was a terrier mix, and he was perhaps the best dog I ever had, he was loyal, he was smart, and he was my best friend with all of his pros and cons. There's no perfect dog, I do appreciate these videos as they help you make a better informed decision, but the truth is, most of us are not going to do all the special training with dogs, most of us have to go to work most of the day, and we're going to have to live with the imperfections of our dogs. Just like we live with the imperfections of our kids our partner and our communities. The most important thing is that you show your dog love, and that you don't abandon it or forget about it, I don't think the breed or the pros or cons of a dog are as important. Just take a chance and do your best, and if it's a dog you truly can't handle, then do the right thing and hold on to that dog until you're absolutely sure you found it a better place.

My first dog, Hubble, was so sweet! We never had to train him not to jump on or bite people. Although, one time at a fancy kennel where every dog got a TV that was mounted to the wall, Hubble ripped it off the wall and was grounded from TV for years LOLOLOL!! He lived 14 1/2 years. RIP in peace.

Son has a chocolate lab. He figured out on his own how to bird hunt. Last couple years he went with us then figured out if he flushes the bird, he retrieves, then he gets a treat. He has always been a shy dog but when shotguns come out, he is like a fat kid on cake. He knows. Trying to get him to relax the the night before we hunt is a chore.

Oh come on! One of, if not the most popular dog breeds in the world. OK, I will bite (unlike a lab). After 30+ years of being around and having pet dogs, I bought my first lab (chocolate- English(show)) 2 years ago. Simply, my favourite dog ever. A loving companion. Affectionate, playful, sociable, intelligent, loves swimming and retrieving (no surprises there!) and great to cuddle with. I will shortly produce my response video of 7 reasons why you should get a choco lab !

My precious 19-month old choco girl Gracie is asleep on my feet right now. This video applies to almost EVERY large dog, as a few others have pointed out. They ALL need training, exercise, attention, grooming, socialization, boundaries, etc. While the points are 100% valid in considering if a dog is the right pet for someone, focusing on chocolate labs is ridiculous. Clickbait title.

I have had over a dozen dogs in my 40 + years.
Many labs and since we lived on a farm in suburbia we often ended up with more dogs than the ones we bought (seriously I think I purchased/rescued maybe six growing up, and somewhere around 20+ just ended up at our place sometimes just for a few days more often for months or years before someone else might take them, never something as organized as foster/adoption system that seems to be the ways of today). Anyways, two chocolates came our way over the years and currently I am long term dog watching another. Chocolates seem to be much less intelligent than their yellow/black brothers, BUT I’ve never met a sweeter animal.

    • @BethBuelow

Wondered the same. Breed standard in the US is 65-80lbs for males, 55-70 for females. 100+ lbs is likely an obese dog 😢

    @debraarnold3703 Před rokem

Most labs required of color require exercise, are social and like reaffirming adult interaction. Chocolate didn't have any other stuff about them than black, silver or yellow. They all shed, should be brushed every day to sluff off shedding, hate it when you're going to be away on long vacations, love fetching and can be trained to fetch and do tricks. They love pleasing humans with trick requests. Have large vocab, and sometimes are skittish and high energy first 2 years.
    They like obedience training.
All breeds should be researched before embarking on getting one. Otherwise, to be unprepared is cruel to the dog. Know what you're getting into and he willing to help your breed thrive. Or get a cat.
