Manitowoc Minute host Charlie Berens shows you every midwest dad during a tornado. After getting the kids in the basement he finds a way to watch the tornado watch or tornado warning from the front porch. As any good Wisconsin dad he'll also find a way to talk smack about the Chicago Bears. Once in Oz, he's on an endless search for beer. #KeepErMovin

Such a midwestern thing to stand outside looking for tornadoes while the sirens are going off
Especially men.
@@michellebilodeau3882 Funnily enough it was my dad taking everyone downstairs while my mom stood outside
Yup I love it
Ellersbane we do this in the south in Texas, too!
Other people don't have their cookouts while storm watching?
At my sisterâs wedding the tornado sirens started just as the recessional finished. The ushers escorted all the guests into a tiny crowded church basement where we we stuck without AC on a humid Twin Cities day for 2 hours. A tornado landed at a strip mall about a mile from the church. And where was the groom?-upstairs filming the tornado.
PRICELESS!!!
He'll yes
starting the marriage off right.
He didn't bring the camcorder for nothin'!
Sounds like he was a keeper
"No it's not a test, those are Wednesdays at noon"
Too real. I'm from Iowa and live in Nebraska and the whole video is painfully accurate.
Bro, I call South Carolina home, but I grew up in Nebraska in Cordova. Lil town, 111 people, seen about that many tornadoes in the 13 years I lived out there.
I am simultaneously crying and laughing at the memories.
I'm in Iowa and we have ours Wednesdays at 9:45
I'm from Nebraska and live in Iowa. Its the other way around for me lol
It's confusingly inconsistent. I live in Dane County and so the first Tuesday of the month is when they test. Iowa County is RIGHT NEXT to us and tests every Friday or something. Like, just choose a damn date, people!
Grew up in Manitowoc. I remember Saturday's at noon.
As a Wisconsinite I can honestly say; That I sit in the garage with a beer and watch storms.
I know when itâs gonna be a good one cause my knee notified me of the storms development two days prior lol.
This one got me cackling
You lucky maimed person. If I knew you, I'd pay you in beer to notify and drink with me.
Huh...I kinda enjoy doing that. And keep a chainsaw near by if I need to go places...
You've got 2 points:
1. If you're looking right at the storm, then you can see when you need to take shelter.
2. You are absolutely right about your arthritic joints being more accurate than the weatherman.
đ€Ł
THIS IS EXACTLY RIGHT - in fact it's official Midwest tornado protocol - you get the fam in the basement and then - while listening to the local weather guy saying don't watch the storm - you goes outside and watches the storm!!! đđđ
Big storm in southeast Wisconsin last night around 1am. I got out of bed and walked outside to check it out.
Yep!!!
Michigan here
From the garage.
If you're not watching the storm from inside your garage with the door wide open. You're not doing it right.
As a Chicagoan, that "less touchdowns than the Bears" hit me hard.
They don't even bother making fun of the Lion's.
Same
Go pack go!
Da bears
Danil you know whatâs up
Congratulations, you've officially become such a great example of language styling that your videos are being used for our linguistics class.
Can we just take a second to appreciate how well he was able to sync the scarecrows mouth with the words
People don't believe me when I tell them in Wisconsin we go sit in the garage with a cold one to watch the storm.
Hey, thunderstorms are the shit
Oh I'm from Ohio. Trust me, I believe you.
I lived in Texas most of my life and now southern MS. We watch the storms too until it gets too close then we go inside.
Minnesotan, I've done this with my grandparents
@@Iceechibi Texan, same.
My dad literally used to do that when we lived in Oklahoma. He'd sit out at the fence with a beer and watch the Tornado while everyone else was in the cellar. He definitely didn't go to Oz tho, he went to prison...yeeeeah..
whenever There's a storm me and my grandpa just stand out in the yard and watch.
Well now I wanna know more
I have a feeling those stories aren't connected?
Did he look up the tornadoes skirt?
@@KateCarew fuck yes.
Yes as a Michigander this was my dad and grandpa every time as a kid, throw everyone in the basement and sit on the porch watching the storm with Marlboros and PBR.
Life was never simpler or better than those moments. Same for my grandpa.
That Storm-porchin' is yours by divine rightđđ one day before I get married I'll ask my man where he'll be when the warnings sound n if it ain't out on the porch, we won't get marriedđ
âIâm not a witch at all Iâm just a guy lookin for beerâ I died
I did the "get in the basement now!" during a tornado warning one time when I was a kid. We waited for the adults to follow us and NONE of them did!
When I talked to the guy who lived across the street from our church in St Peter, MN after the tornado he said he was outside watching until a brick flew past him, went through his wall and landed in his living room.
Nate Gerard Real Estate Team That was the worst tornado that I can remember. St. Peter was just wiped out.
That's when I'd head inside too
Years ago St. Peter MN a tornado wiped out a big part of town.
@@spriggansiedeutsch6817
Sprechen Sie Deutsch, and yes, it was a bad tornado in St. Peter. We lived in Mankato.
always felt comfortable living in Mankato, never worried about tornados cuz if one came to the area, it was going straight to St. Peter
Yep!! As a Wisconsinite, I always got my kids in the basement and went outside to watch the storm with the neighbors⊠then the next day, you talk about how close it came to you đđđđ. True story! đ
Us too!! Central Illinois here!!!
Only two, tree miles away?
As a North Dakotan...we do the same things over here...shuffle the pets and kids to the basement-with their treats and fav toys-while we sit outside with our phones to the skyđ€Ł
my dad said this was like an autobiography so well written he wanted to cry
As a Chicagoan, that bears comment hits hard, But also I can confirm every mid-westerner stands on the front porch just outside the storm or in the garage watching the storm
We do it in the South too
Agreed
My dad loves to sit outside in the garage and watch as everything flies away. There was a tornado warning one time at 2 oâclock in the morning and he was still watching outside đđ
those late night ones are a blast to watch to be fair
Apparently I learned that in a past life I lived in the Midwest, because whenever the rare tornado warning happens in NC, I'm always outside looking for the supercells. Or maybe it's just because we always get warnings but hardly ever get touchdown.
truth is, i watch some comedy videos about living in the south ,and people from the Midwest always comment saying they do the same thing. So now here i am, and i live in South Carolina, and im watching the midwest comedy, and yea its true. Apparently, alot of its the same . Never seen a dad here that didnt stand on the porch during a tornado watch.
As a Wisconsinite this is real
This seems pretty realistic to me der guy
Yup
Which part? The tornado watching or going to Oz?
Or Ohio! Misdwesterners have much in common.
For sure
"We should probably head to the basement. There's a storm coming, and Dad's getting his camera."
Simply amazing.
Just became a dad, so I can't wait to stand on the porch đ
Donât forget your beer!
One time our entire family was sheltered in the basement, when my dad went upstairs to check on the conditions outside only to catch my dog red-pawed finishing off the entire steak he had prepared before the warning sent us downstairs. From that day onward the empty foot area under the table has been reserved for table games to prevent her from getting back up there lol
Watching the storm walls cross the sky is probably one of my favorite summer pass times. When the sky turns green you know the show is going to be good.
"Tornadoes - got less touchdowns than the bears" This isn't the time for savagery dad..
I'm almost positive he meant the lions
@@BobbyB910 Poking fun at the Lions is really just tasteless at this point -long time Michigander Detroit fan
@@Sabs215 I live in Michigan now I moved up a few years ago from texas
Or the Falcons...
Hahaha
My family is from Kansas, my grandpa lived his entire life in the same small town. He didn't want us to be nervous so he didn't tell us to go to the basement, but he still sat outside watching the skies just incase
couple years ago the sirens were going off for a tornado, my son and I were in the swimming pool in the back yard watching the funny looking clouds go by. The next day, everyone was yelling at us, "You did What?"
Ngl I want more Midwestern Wizard of Oz
The tin man would be made out of old beer kegs and the cowardly lion would be a badger who is only a little unsure of himself but you get him to a Packers game he'll be alright
You mean hillbilly wizard of oz đ that sounds awesome
Nothing flies like a Deere! đđđ
Best time to grill is during a tornado watch. I even picked up some Panda Express and sat outside watching.
I cannot believe this doesn't have 7 million views !
That was incredible !! I can't remember the last time a CZcams sketch made my jaw drop !
Love the red crocsđ

Now THOSE would be press briefings I'd look forward to! đ. And seriously - who WOULDN'T vote for this guy? I mean he knows how to prepare for a disaster - cheese, jerky, and beer! đ
âMadison, Iâm just telling you right now you picked the wrong day to air out your tent. Yeah, I know you got it at REI, but itâs about to RE-fly.â
đ
And while the house was flying so was the REI tent! đ
I cackled. Fantastic.
"I'll take your red crocks." Lol đ
In Indiana on my family farm, a tornado ripped out our apple tree orchard in our front yard. My mom had me an my siblings in the back yard pulling the goats to the barn from their tethered spikes. She said it was in the front, we would be fine đ
Oh my Gosh! My dad used to make us all go to the basement while he stood on the porch to watch too! That was really cute Charlie!
Haha, my whole family took supper out on the porch and watched!
Same with my grandparents- everyone in the basement except them, lol
This is perfectly timed! I live in Oklahoma and we had tornado warnings for an hour. What did we do? Go outside to look at the color of the sky. Why? Because Oklahoma, THAT'S WHY!
Yup, drinking Lone Star Beer in a tin can back in Okfuskee Co. Amen.
@Garrett McCullough Not surprising, War Acres by Chance?
@Garrett McCullough Amen Bro and both my parents and relatives are from all over OK.
I live in arkansas and I remember at 5 or something years old the sirens went off and my dad went outside to look around. And put me in the laundry room of our flimsy house instead of the probably kinda safe crappy musty deadly spider infested basement. But it was fine. Still donât get why people look outside at the storm when it wants to kill you
Same in MO
Awesome video. Great editing. I've been sitting on the porch eating popcorn and drinking beer and watching storms with my daughter for the past 50 years. Great video. When I was in the air force in Wichita Falls, TX, I sat on the roof of my barracks and watched a tornado for about 10 minutes. The MPs came by and made me get off. Weather - lightning, thunder and tornados are the greatest show on earth. Just try and duplicate that action, it would cost $billion$.
As long as you can see the tornado & where it's going your fine. Rain wrapped at night & you might as well sleep in the tornado shelter. Because you'll never see it coming.
@@NirrrinaI donât know if he thought it was impressive that he was sitting on a roofâŠsheesh!
we lived with friends in Witcha Falls in a neighborhood that had been hit. some bare slabs, some houses totally repaired, some livable. saw what looked like a big barrel with stairs coming out of the top. took me a minute to figure out it was a storm shelter to bury in the ground. good time there.
sitting in a lawn chair in your garage watching a storm is a Midwestern rite of passage
"Why don't cha leave the dad jokes to me. Ah-ight?" đ€Łđ€Ł
As a person from Kansas I can confirm this happens uh well every time thereâs a tornado
The ruby red crocs and cheddar brook road!! đđ đ
My sister and I were always begging my dad to take tornado warnings seriously. A tree fell on our house and he still wasn't in the basement with us despite our pleading for him to get down there with us. The. Lights went off and there was a loud cracking sound. Dad came down the stairs with a candle and made an "Eeeeee" sound like a ghost. It scared the bejeezus out of us and he had a huge laugh about it all. It takes a hell of a lot for him to get worked up about pretty much anything! đ
Recently found your videos. Lived in MN, WI, and MI in the mid' 70's. A majority of my dialect is like my parents, New England (not the accent). Apparently in grade school, I added "Ope!" to my vocabulary, but not the accent. 45 years later still have a few Upper Midwest in me. When I was a kid one time a bad storm came through and I told my old man, we have to go to the basement. So he sent me to the basement lol when I came out 15 minutes later he said, hey Iâm still here but my beer isnât, how about you run to the fridge?
This is what I do all the time sit out side just watching it. I live in Kansas so Iâm use to having a lot of tornadoes.
As an Illinoisan I can tell you we definitely go outside to watch as soon as the sirens go off!
Cheddar brick road!
K well obviously need to deliver on a full version of "if I only had a beer"
Charlie, this video was a piece of art. Hope you make more stuff like this, it was hilarious and really well thought out. Didn't know you had those editing skills either
Praying for the tornado victims in the Midwest today đ
âlooks like a bobber on acidâ

You went on that acid trip too? No one else commented it I thought I was the only one when the beer hit.
Oh cripes, not da' tent!
I got dat at Scheels. They were havin a sale. Buy one tent, get a share ownership for da Packers.
LOL. This is a spot on representation of my dad during tornado weather, except without the beer. I've turned into my dad, as well, cuz I'm up on the porch watching the storm. Luckily, I have not gotten conked on the head yet and taken a trip to Oz.
As a resident of very far North Wisconsin this is completely true I've done this personally tornadoes are like a family activity
This video made me realize I NEED a show where Charlie watches movies and does commentary for it đ«đ
Mystery Milwaukee Theater 2020. Charlie with his Hulk Hogan doll and Aaron hand puppet. I'd tune in fer shure.
Oh yea! I'd watch that fer sure! đ
"Midwest Science Theatre 3000!" I second this!
kids have it easy these days XD in my day, we had to sit in the basement with no wi-fi
I was thinking 'wtf why aren't they on the porch?' and then it happened. Thanks for keeping it real.
Was NOT expecting a full re-edit of the Wizard of Oz in this, but you went all out! Nice work!
Charlie needs to do the whole wizard of Oz ...that was awesome
Omg - Myles Montolaisir from YouBetcha as the wizard of oz! đ
I see a lot of potential with the flying monkeys.
Wish it was 5 minutes longer and you did the whole movie
Yep. I'm a proudly born midwesterner, specifically Illinois, and my dad was exactly like this. Exactly.
As a Minnesotan, this is so true!!!! We had lightening strike out front yard tree and shoot through the roots that blew off shingles on the house and then and ONLY then did we finally go inside!! Hahaha!!!!!
This took some serious collab to pull off - per the credits: thanks to Max Larsen, Adam Greuel, and Graham Kessel!!! đ
I died at RE flyđđđ

Hope everyone who was in the path of the tornadoes today is safe. Sending prayers
The Wednesday siren test is so accurate. I live in Texas and in elementary school, we would always hear the sirens during recess. They were tested on the first Wednesdayâs every month

Charlie, that was one of your best videos. Keep 'em coming.
Agreed!!! Very well thought out. Loved the part, "I'm not a witch. I'm just a guy looking for a beer."
Our whole family watched tornadoes from the porch growing up, ran downstairs if the weather channel said it was passing over us, no big deal đ
I had to watch this THREE TIMES before I caught the ridiculous foreshadowing in the first part of this video. I donât know, da man is M. Night Shyamalan and, dare I say, Steven Spielberg, all wrapped up in one delicious Culverâs butter burger. đ
The Albanian Lorg did you watch it sober?

Grew up in Kansas, i don't even pay attention until the air is green and the hail starts. Somehow, the last couple really bad storms always happen when I'm at work. Let me tell you, lightning hitting the roof of home Depot is scary AF
From Wisconsin. Remember when I was little by dad would always sit on the porch with a miller lite and Iâd be sitting right next to him with my Fanta whenever there was a tornado
I love how you can't take the Midwest - or the journalist - out of da Charlie! đ This is really a public service announcement dressed up as ridiculous comedy. It's also the journalist when he asks the scarecrow "what would you do with a beer if you had one?'" đ
Also, "Madison" as the daughter's name. So much wrapped up in that choice! đđ
"fewer touch downs than the bears" đđ
Back in the late 1950's my father and I sat on the front porch in Fostoria Ohio and watched a tornado go through town!
That was ancient times.
I was very shocked last April when Shelby was hit as the storms tore towards the East. Sun shining as the tornado siren went off in Richland County, phone alert said Bellville but never lost power. One dog had went into hiding while I stood outside with the other. SW Ohio looks ominous, windy way before spotters report a possible tornado.
I was in north east South Dakota and the tornado warning came. I loaded the kids in the car to go investigate. I forgot I had tater tots in the oven. Came home after the excitement and smoke was pouring out the windows. Go Packers!
When he was on the way to Oz I was sure he'd make an Ozaukee joke.
