    I have a solar and battery backup system. The method I use is in the morning I let my battery charge up while the solar production is climbing because the batteries have been running my house all night. Then I set my car charger to match the solar output with clouds because the battery will compensate for the variation in production. Towards the end of the day I stop charging and allow my batteries to charge completely again to run my house all night. Of course there is a learning curve but is not difficult. This is how the electric company runs the grid basically. They have to monitor and adjust and start up another plant.It's actually fun to me. Also my car charger can be controlled through an app so I don't have to even be home.

    I charge my Tesla Model 3 Long range by Solar most of the time.. I use Zappi Solar Aware smart charger which can charge exclusively by Solar. If cloud comes and solar production reduces, it automatically stops charging and when cloud goes away and solar production increases, it starts charging again.. I don't have to touch or change any settings.. It's essentially set and forget.. You should check out the Zappi charger..

    This is great, much love from S. Africa🇿🇦… cool experiment 🧪, it would be nice to also see the experiment when there are no clouds but it’s fully sunny ☀️ in summer. It would be nice to see that too. Im planning to get a 16kW system with maybe 30-40kWh battery. I love watching such videos, I learn a lot. Do a summer time no clouds video.🙌🏿

    There are a lot of losses converting from Solar DC to AC, then AC/DC mode charge to the Tesla. We need DC-DC EV chargers we can hook up directly to the Solar MPPT charge Controllers to charge the EVs.

    We need giant balloons cabled to the ground floating over the average cloud line, covered in panels. As the sun moves across the sky the collected energy will remain the same, regardless of time of year, or latitude. It will be higher because the collection will be way above the horizon at ground level. This totally doable with current tech, even enough so to make it stormproof. I think I need a large grant to make this happen at an experimental level.

    Do you have the pest abatement installed? Noticed some systems don't have the skirts on the side but I'm not sure if that's just how tesla does it now, I saw some pictures and it seems like it was a fence

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel  Před 2 lety

      I do not have pest abatement or fencing. I have skirting on front and sides but not top. The skirting leaves less than a two inch gap between the skirt and roof. I have also removed or trimmed back all trees around my home to keep squirrels etc from reaching the roof. So far no issues with birds.

  • @litestuffllc7249
    @litestuffllc7249 Před 9 měsíci +2

    It is a good demonstration. What month of the year? You were starting at 21% and had 24 solar panels with 7.5 kWh capacity. That is 60% in a shade over 9 hours, If you had half as many solar panels; it would be 9 hours to get 30% if you had a slightly longer day. Did you have any powerwalls in this situation? Tesla is known to slow significantly at the higher percentages of charge - would this be true at the 20 amp rate or could you go higher at the same charge rate without slowing down? Was this 100% of the panel's output - ie. your house if dependent on solar would not be getting any power?

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for watching! This experiment was conducted in May 2021. I did not have Powerwall at that time but do now. I don't think the slower charge rate applies to charging with a level 2 wall connector charger, only with Supercharging which can charge more than 20x faster than a home charger. The wall connector can charge up to 11/12 kW. I was only limiting it in this video to keep from drawing much charge from the grid. There was a time in the video where I showed that I was pushing about 91% (500w/5800w) in the video at about the 4:00 mark. I am going to be completing an updated experiment soon and will post the results using Tesla's new "Charge On Solar" feature.

      Net metering solves that problem. You send the power to the grid during the day, and you pull from the grid at night to charge.

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel

      Thanks for watching! When the grid is out the system also powers off my panels for safety of utility workers which may be working nearby. I don't have Powerwall yet but if I did then the system could charge Powerwall during an outage and that power could then be used to charge the Model 3.

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel

    But given the OUTPUT of your PV array YES you can charge a Tesla from the SUN which is why we OVERSIZED our PV system from a recommended 10.3 kWh to 13.1 kWh PV system. And given the average American drives about 40 miles per day you can see how fast you could add 40 to 50 miles to your Tesla. So start the test at 90% drive 40 to 50 miles and then see how long it would take to replenish the SOC back to 90%.

    I have a solar system that is a 4.6 kw system. I recently wanted to upgrade due to wanting a Tesla. I have a large commute, to get to work I travel 80 miles, so 160 miles a day. The guy wanted to add 16 more panels and two batteries to my system 🤣. Overall he said 60,000 worth of solar, and the car would be around the same price, so 120,000.
    Do I even need the extra solar power?

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching! What is your current offset based on your current usage without the Tesla? Did you get that quote from Tesla Solar? I've found Tesla to have the best pricing. Do you have net metering with your utility? If so you likely do not need the home batteries unless your area gets a lot of power outages. The extra panels only make sense if you want to ensure your Tesla is largely charged by solar, which would be ideal, or if your current system is undersized, or if your grid prices are very high. Otherwise, when driving your Tesla you do have the excellent Supercharging network to use in a pinch but I would recommend home charging or work charging if you can. If you haven't already get a solar quote from Tesla. Consider using my referral link to earn credits you can use for cool Tesla merch after your new system is activated if you do end up adding more panels. www.tesla.com/referral/shawn68886

      @@TeslaFamilyChannel unfortunately I live in California and it does cost a pretty penny for energy. I’m not a spec guy, and am trying to learn about this through the internet and various videos. That’s said, it is just me and my wife in a four bed, three bathroom home, we have a 4.6kw system purchased through sunrun. This is our first year in a brand new built home, that has smart home capabilities, and is supposed to be energy efficient. We are set to get a true up bill soon of at least 250. Not sure if you’re aware of that, but in California if you don’t produce enough energy and end up using the grid energy they charge you at the end of the year. So I didn’t produce enough solar power this year, and will have to pay out.
      I was looking into other companies but the last one I spoke with said they will only install their system and would take my existing panels off, which doesn’t make sense to me.
      I’ll look into Tesla panels and maybe even use the link if I don’t hit a wall with them. Thanks for the reply

    • @TeslaFamilyChannel
      @TeslaFamilyChannel  Před rokem +1

      Thats weird that the other company told you that you have to take the other panels off. Pretty sure Tesla will just add a new (second) system to your home. Here in MD we don't have annual true up but pay back monthly for any grid draw that exceeds what we pushed in. Good luck!
