      @@Metal-Possum I think it's insane you're claiming the machining on these pedals is simple. You can't just take a block of billet aluminum and make these pedals. They require special tooling for each part. Beside that, CNC machines aren't magic cutting devices, they have to be guided and programmed with a human with machining experience. When you factor labor and equipment cost 1000 dollars is completely reasonable. If you just "get your hands on a pair of Axis pedals and paid somebody to replicate them" It would take them forever, and they would have to get special tooling made.

    • @TomWolfDrum
      @TomWolfDrum Před 3 lety +3

      QuorthonsInferno I own both the A’s and the Lazers, I’m also a CNC machinist by trade. Reverse engineering these pedals, while time consuming, would not be too tough. There’s no special tooling involved for the most part, just dozens of small pieces that would require a few operations. I figure Axis’s shop must be mostly small manual mills and lathes based on the simplicity of the individual parts. Of course, theres a few pieces on the Lazer’s that feature a radius that isn’t on the A’s. To me that suggests a CNC mill, but overall the charm is in their simplicity.

    Damn son! The 21's have always interested me because of the foot board, I think offering the symmetrical footboard as an upgrade, or have an option to select either them or the "classic" style footboard would be a great idea. I loved my AL-2s and eventually will purchase axis again in the future and I think having the option between the two footboard styles would be pretty cool, could go either both "classic", both symmetrical, or have the option to have one of each, say your non dominant foot is slightly sloppy enough to where you notice it, but was not noticed in your playing, that extra space where the cut out is in the "classics" could be a game changer, or if one is the type of drummer to play in socks or barefoot, sweat would be less of an issue if you don't like the feeling of grip tape

  • @jonathanmillar
    @jonathanmillar Před 4 lety +2

    I had a set of Axis A longboards (double pedal) for 10 years which I used all over the place - recordings, touring, etc.
    I absolutely LOVED playing them and I had some great times with them. But...
    Practically, they were a nightmare;
    - the nut for the hoop clamp is directly under the foot board and because it's direct drive, you're fighting it just to get it installed
    - there's no 'stop' for the bass drum hoop, which means it's possible to attach it 'too far' and the pedal will rub against the bass drum head, you had to be minutely accurate with it which is a PITA when you're trying to set up quickly on a cramped, dark stage
    - the original connecting rod between pedals was round and the only thing securing it against the torque of the left foot were some hex screws clamping into it, these gradually loosened over time and on any number of occasions, it would slip or fail entirely. The later one I had added a drum key screw which allowed it to be more secure, but fundamentally it was still flawed
    - adjustment of many parts was done with drum screws that had a plastic cap on it for you to turn by hand. This plastic cap was rubbish in terms of applying enough torque and the parts that used it would slip. Eventually nearly all of them broke on me
    - many other parts were secured or adjusted by hex screws and I found them just not up to the job and you'd either slowly wring the keys or the screws
    - I came to realise that if something DID break and you were in some random city, the chances of you being able to find parts to repair or replace something was virtually nil
    The end result was before every single gig, when I got to the venue I would have to take 20 mins to go over and check or tighten everything to stop things from going wrong. Even at that, I had no end of issues with them over the years.
    I see the latest pedals seem to have drum key adjustments in all the key places, that's definitely a step in the right direction. I also should note that many months after I had contacted them for spare parts to no reply, they did reach out to me and really went above and beyond to sort me out, so they are definitely improving on that front.
    Glad to see they're putting out new gear, I respect them greatly, but I think I'd struggle to part with the cash for their new gear for anything other than studio use, even with their recent improvements.

      It's pretty blind support if there's no other brand tried out, but there's nothing wrong with being loyal to a brand that's treated you well. Pretty much the only pros still using Axis are sponsored though, everyone else has moved to Trick, ACD, or Czarcie Kopyto. If Axis had listened to people years ago and made the improvements wanted, they wouldn't have to be throwing out so many novelties to try to catch up. Samus might get top notch customer service, but another complaint about them has been they don't treat customers well. Enough red flags that I wouldn't buy them for a long time to come.

    I have both the those pedals toooo! I love them both to bits - best feeling pedals ever at any tempo. I have the A’s set up as a double and the Lazer’s set up as two singles. I love the classic axis A footboard look, and don’t experience any downside with it compared with Lazer’s big footboard. The Lazer’s have always felt like 5% more “natural” to me, probably because of the 21 degree flat milled on the #1 pc. I play a lot of death metal but I also play a lot of hip hop/funk and the Axis will never be outdone. I’m a Machinist by trade, and I can really appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into these pedals. My A’s are probably a decade older than the Lazer’s and i swear side by side you almost can’t feel a difference. The A’s have been thrashed around hard - carelessly tossed into the back of a trailer travelling to and from shows. Never had a single issue with either sets of pedals. My favourite features have to be the super lightweight footboard, and the ability to easily switch between two single pedals and a double pedal. The biggest improvement with the Lazer’s over the A’s is definitely NO MORE ALLEN KEYS! That and the 21 degree flat (the sonic hammer beaters are a bit heavy for my taste). I’ll buy a pair of George Kollias or Derek Roddy signature from Axis before I even consider trying another, copycat brand.

    I have had my axis pedals for 6 years with extensive use. I would like to see them make the slave beater attachment better and not so awkward, it does lack power compared to other pedals because of the long arm it sits on. Also upgrade the driveshaft to not be round. They are not hard to dial in but other pedals have simplicity down and that's what is pushing them out of the market compared too 10 years ago. I remember when axis were THE pedals now they have been a little complacent and have lost significant market share to Trick and other companies essentially just making their design more efficient. Also when you buy a 900$ set of pedals, include a case for them. My 200$ iron cobras came with a case.

    Ya, they really need to work on customer service. I emailed them for a replacement part 3 times and still haven't heard back from them after a month. I figured they may have gone out of business. Glad to hear they're still going, but they need to be available to their customers.

    I've got a whole "collection" of A long boards. 2 of the weakest links: the heel hinge (blocks) and the sonic hammer. The heel hinge slop that develops over time is most annoying. I've tightened them, replaced them, etc. I lost count of how many sonic hammers I've broken - they always break where the threads start on the shaft. I got in the habit of bringing an extra one on gigs, because they broke on me live 2 separate times. Also, I've stabbed the tops of my feet every once in a great while when getting a long throw going, which is painful. I switched over to wrecking balls over a year ago, and so far so good. So it's nice to see they've addressed the heel hinge/block issue, and that they eased up promoting the sonic hammers.

    I've never used a direct drive let alone Axis pedal. But they look amazing. And when I've into them the foot board kind of scared me on how they're shaped based on the way I play with my foot forward. But with a footboard design like the a21, it looks like it could work better.

    I love to drum, I am decent at it lol, I live you and your videos, and for some one who doesn't know technicalities, I am quite Influenced by professional opinions, I could not recommend to adapt the wide board to the A series, but could agree to the symmetry, especially when watching those with speed swivel techniques, it seems it would be more appropriate for such drumming

    I have been using A long board almost identical to yours (just in a double set up, not two singles), and I can't say the width, or size of the foot board has ever been an issue for me. Of course I prefer the overall design because it is bigger than my old iron cobras, but I have never felt I needed MOAR. For reference I have size 12 feet, fairly wide.
