      Akso there is an integration national law now that says teaching in Russian is no longer allowed in schools, all Russians that want to keep permanent residence or citizenship must pass Latvian language exams.

    About Cheddar. Not sure if you know but Preiļu Siers is one of the largest cheese producers in Europe. They are making cheddar since 1973. It may not be as the one you get in Sommerset,Cheddar but I believe their vintage cheddar line is not bad. Try it if you haven't yet. Love your videos! P.S. not so long ago there was a bigger chance to buy a Latvian made Cheddar in the UK supermarket than local made. They were buying 20kg cheddar blocks from LV and repackaging them. Just a bit of modern day cheese history.

It’s quite funny, because I can’t have English chocolate, it’s too sweet for me :))) but I am also not enjoying latvian chocolate anymore. I don’t know if it’s because biggest company was taken over and changed recipe or just my taste has changed. The best is belgium chocolate for me, but I buy some swiss chocolate in uk. The funny thing about tea as well, I can’t have english breakfast tea it makes me sick :))) but I absolutely love cheddar cheese. I also used to send some parcels from Uk to Lv, but I stopped since we left eu. I am thinking of returning to Latvia and I am sure I will miss some of my English food. While the vast majority of Latvians condemn Russia and Putin in particular, some Russians are somewhat still justifying Russia's attack on Ukraine. But I must say that ethnic Russians have become more quiet about this situation if compared to how loud they were supporting Putin's actions in foreign affairs in the past. Deep in heart they know that Putin is not the good guy anymore.

    You have a point, because before football, there come a lot of sports. Of course hockey is the biggest, but right now basketball is pretty big too, also beach volleyball, and maybe only then it's football. And it's true that most latvians appreciate tourists. The only thing that will absolutely change a latvians attitude towards you, is if he sees, that you're a foreigner and you try to speak with him in russian. Russian is a pretty big trigger for latvians, and if someone asks me anything in russian first, they get a lecture. But that's about it. Enjoy your time in Latvia.

    • @J.E.E

      Thank you Sonyman for your input.
      With the younger crowd speaking in English is super easy and I have seen conversations between locals where a question was asked in Russian and the person responded in Latvian... And that went on for about 5 minutes. It was super cool to watch how determined each person was to stick to their language.
      I am curious though... Is it just Russian that you find offensive, because of the recent history, or would you feel the same if you were approached in English?
      Obviously I am sensitive to people's feeling and I would not approach a young person in Russian, unless it is very apparent that they are of Russian ethnicity, however the generation 40+ usually does not take offense.

    • @sonymangames
      @sonymangames Před 2 lety +1

      @@J.E.E No no, the offense is only on Russian, because it just boggles my mind how a person living 30 years In a sovereign country hasn't learned the state language or is unwilling to speak it. I haven't heard of another nation thinking that everyone needs to speak their language. For example i would look silly if i went to England and started speaking Afrikaans, because no one would understand me and neither should they. If you speak english it's apparent that I'm speaking to a tourist or a person that's just moved here. Even the simplest "sveiki", instead of "zdraske" brightens up your day and me living in a Russian dominant district of Jūrmala it's a sensitive topic. Thank you for the video again, great work.

    Prague is the opposite. Some places won't rent to foreigners, and if they do, they pay more, more often than not. They are worried foreigners will trash the place and leave and Czech citizens who would trash the place and leave would be able to be found and sued or charged. It's the same stigma for Brits at some places in Prague. It's the stag groups who go and pee on the streets, get loud and rowdy. A number of bars I go to even have signs saying no stags or groups of Brits allowed. I was at a bar once and 3 British guys came in and never got service and left. The only time I have ever seen the public drinking ban at certain parts of town- meaning no open containers, is on Brits. It is always a nice treat that in Slavic countries ladies take care of themselves and how they dress. In the US and even UK and Amsterdam now, ladies just put on leggings or joggers and hoodies...

      Always good to read comparisons. It could be that the expat community in Prague is much greater than in Riga.
      Also I think it may have to do with me personally, as I negotiate quite hard and point out the advantages to the owners.
      The stag parties had become a serious problem in Riga, but most bars I think welcome the lads as they do like to spend money on booze when drunk.

    My friend let me tell you a lie about Baltic States because u are from Britain and your king is romanian, we ruled Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia because Stefan Bathory Prince of Transylvania became also king and duke of those lands, history repeated in 1657 when Rakotzi II conquered with his valachian and moldavian army Poland! 😄😄😄
