- Making A Cane Sword
In this video I made a Bocote and Walnut cane sword. It's about 35" long, this was a fun project I've never turned a cane before.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodturning and woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning. - Jak na to + styl

Came out really nice. I have (and use) a sword cane from Cold Steel. The only thing I'd mention, is that anyone wanting to possibly make, use or sell one, they should know their local laws first. Sword cane's in many states are specifically illegal and are considered a concealed dangerous weapon.
Love your work, look forward to the next one!Cheers
Thank you, ya you don't want to get in trouble.
I’m recently disabled, I’m 36 years old and would love a cane made by you!!! Truly amazing!!!
Great looking piece as always. I did mine a little different. Because I do have a concealed carry permit, I made mine with the bottom of the cane being the handle for the blade, and put the same size steel in the handle (made like a "T" on top) and it becomes a "type of hammer" to use both to strike and defend with. Also my lathe is not long enough to turn a 36 or 37 inch piece so I turn a 28" piece and then make a special "foot" for the bottom that actually makes a good sword handle. When it passes through a metal detector it all appears to be just a re-enforced walking stick. I am a disabled veteran and do have to use it, but I will not list here how many places I have gone using it, and never been stopped.
BTW, you were my first watch turner/teacher even before I bought my first lathe. Thanks for all I have learned from you over the years.
Nice piece of work Carl. That is a very nice piece of Bocote. Beautiful grain and color. Yes the tip does need some sort of protective tip or feral. This is a great start to 2020. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Glen!
Bocote is a beautiful wood, and that cane turned out really nice. You can't beat garage sale deals, if you're in the right neighborhoods.
Very nicely done Carl! I love the contrasting woods........... 👍👍
Thank you!
Gorgeous wood! I like that it is repurposed from something else.
Beautiful work sir 🏴
One of the best looking cane swords I have seen. Good method and great choice of wood.
Thank you so much Martin!! I really appreciate that!
That has turned out really nice ! I love using recycled materials it is so rewarding .
Thanks buddy, ya this was a great find.
I have always wanted a cane sword! 😍
That is so cool! I've always wanted a cane sword. Great work Carl! Looks amazing :)
Thanks man!
Beautiful cane. I admire your skew work.
Thank you William!
Great project Carl! And you even show how to do the handle, so cool!
Thank you very much!
Hi carl,
Bocote is à Very nice wood !
Thanks for sharing, take care
Thanks!
Great looking cane! Love the Bocote graining!
Thank you Bob!
MC21/12
What a great find with the wood!
And very nice project!
Thank you!
You might just have inspired me to make a cane also. Beautiful!
Thank you Stuart!
Now that is just plain COOL! Probably don't want to go through the airport scanners, however 😂
Hahaha...Thanks buddy!
I took one through the scanners at Orlando International Airport (heading back to the UK) in March 2002 with no problems.
Mind you, it was in my hold luggage along with a battery pack I'd made for my (then) up-to-date straight to DVD camcorder.
I still have both and have since made another sword cane with a solid brass handle and a copper 'cane'. Neither see much use due to UK laws on such things. Nice to have in the house ... just in case!
Carl;I really liked this project and the wood you used. It was great to meet you in Boise several weeks ago. I got to sign my name on the roof of your trailer - yeah. I started watching your videos about 5 years ago, and I don't think I have missed any. I don't always click the "like" button because I watch it on Roku on my TV, but I really appreciate all your videos and everything I have learned from you.Thank You,Kerry S.
Thank you very much Kenny, it was nice meeting you too.
A beautiful piece of work.
Thank you Harry!
Cool project. Looks awesome.
Thank you George!
That turned out awesome, great piece!
Thank you buddy!
Many people have pointed out the illegality of such an object in most parts of the world, merely owning it is illegal where I live.. Your cane is a lovely piece of work, and I enjoyed watching it being made. However to avoid attention from prying eyes the shaft should be of smaller diameter, most antique sword canes contain a short rapier or other stabbing weapon. It also shouldn't rattle. Both are giveaways to anyone paying attention.
Turned out looking great!
Thank you David!
Thanks for sharing...! Nice job!
Thanks!
Awesome job on the cane.
Thank you Allan!
Awesome work Carl! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks buddy!
Great project! Now you need to learn swordsmanship! Thanks, be safe!
Hahaha Thanks Bobby!
Cool project Carl!! Great job Bro. Good score on wood too 👍👍👍
Thanks brother!

Thanks Barry! That would be a great project.
Very beautiful....
Thanks for share...🙏
Thank you!
Very nice! I’ve learned so much from you, and still nowhere near even being close to as skilled. Maybe one day. Lol
Thank you very much!
Good find on that boycote wood and a cool looking cane! My father is addicted to going to thrift stores now went there once to look for a bed frame for the spare room in his house and he found a 6pc Bose stereo surround sound system for like $40 bucks!! now he goes to 3 of em everday and my mother says he comes home with some really nice stuff EVERYDAY.LOL
Thanks Joe! That's awesome love the thrift stores.
@@CarlJacobson I even went to a cpl and found a nice matching set of old looking aromatic cedar hope chests tht I got for 34$ each refinished them both and sold the one alone for 750$ other one i gave to my father r for fathers day
Man, what a nice piece of wood and that thing turned out awesome. The magnet was a good idea. That way you're not relying on the fit to hold it together. Great job again. Hope you and Robin are doing well. Arizona is probably a good place to be right now. The PNW's weather can't decide where it wants to be, best to leave it to its own nonsense for a time.
Thanks buddy! Robin looked up the weather in Indio California it's going to be 79 will be there in a couple of days 😁
Well done!
Beautiful work Carl
Thanks Steve!
Such a cool and unique project! Nice one :D
Thanks buddy!
Love it Carl! Fabulous looking cane! I need one for my feisty 90 y.o. mother. (Her tongue is likely as sharp, bless her cotton socks).
Hahaha....Thank you :)
Handle looks great
Thanks Taylor!
Very nice Carl!! Anyone that likes those would love to own it for sure. I know I would :)
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much Russell!
@@CarlJacobson You're welcome Carl!!
Very nice. Looks almost like one I have that goes back to WW2 and belonged to my grandfather. One exception the handle is sterling silver in the shape of a wolf with red glass eyes. Great job overall!
Wow! That sounds amazing! ❤️ Grandfathers❤️
Very cool!
awesome Carl
Thanks buddy!
That Bea pretty sweet buddy lol . Cool project came out great take care .
Hahaha....Thanks buddy :)
It's beautiful. I'd love to have something like that one of these days. But honestly I was thinking about something I could beat someone over the head with if the need ever came. LOL. Always be aware of your surrounding. 😊
Wow man, that's beautiful! Also, very handy in case the zombies come. 😬
HAHAHA....Thanks :)
Beautiful Carl, once again, nice skew work. I wish you well with the Gorilla glue. My experience with it, when used with joints that get stressed, has shown it to be too brittle and eventually breaks loose.
Thank you! Thanks for the tip I wont be using it much, but good to know.
Cool project and please , you have to let us in on the secret of using mustard for glue. That's amazing!
Thank you Matt! Hahaha... It's titebond 2 😁
Great video as always Carl.
Thank you Bill!
Thank you so much, that turned out awesome. Beautiful piece of wood.
And I’ll just get my magic carpet ready to fly to Arizona, 😂😂😂
As always take care
Thank you Val, we may need your magic carpet the weather is getting bad :)
Good job Carl und good woods 👍👌
Thanks Pietro!
Super cool project buddy!!
Thanks buddy!
Awesome cane.
Thank you Sue!
Cane tips with screw off rubber tip that hides a carbide tip for ice another option. Nice job!
I love the cane. I thought about making one for myself. People are walking around with guns these days more than ever. I wouldn't worry about carrying a concealed weapon.
As long as no one can clearly see that its a cane sword....
If nobody can see it than that make it better because if a person attack a person with a sword cane than they will not see it coming.
Very cool job 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Tomas!
Dang that turned out beautiful. I'll be needing one of those soon.
Have you ever turned a lightsaber? If not I would like to see that. Resin and wood combined. 😉
Thanks Henrik! I made a lightsaber a few years ago, but not with resin. Great idea!
Its a fine piece of craftsmanship no one could deny that! but for my personal taste slightly too stout. but that aside you have captured the beauty of the wood magnificently and I love the walnut grip. you now have a subscriber
Thank you very much Chris!!
i love your work style!!
Thank you
Wow sir its a Amazing job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Хорошая работа.
Nice
Muito bonito esse trabalho, parabéns 👏👏👏
Obrigado!
Nice work, Carl!
Thanks brother, did you get your calendar?
Carl Jacobson yes Sir!
Sweet, thanks man!
Not to be "THAT GUY." A sword cane can be considered a concealed weapon in some states and or municipalities. And in your part of the country, goodness knows you can't have such of an evil high capacity cane.
Hahaha...Luckily I have my concealed weapons permit.
Yea the Communists / Socialists in our country wouldn’t want you to defend yourself. Heaven forbid. You could hurt some psychopath are worse, them. (Just Playing around here folks, if you can’t tell)
@@MJ-nb1qn I wouldn't play around with them, just hand them their internal organs.
Grar Varg - Yes Comrade
Nice self defence item or at the very least a handy utensile at a Brazilian steak house. As always a nice project.
lol
HAHAHA...Thanks James!
Me too - blades over 6 inches, 4" in some cases, are illegal in Colorado. I want one, of course
Very cool.
Thank you!!
Cool Sword.
Thanks!
Nice Work
Thank you Ron!
AWESOME!
Thanks brother!
It needs a longer neck, to use as the sword handle. That cane handle shape is more for a push dagger. But still lovely work. 👍👍
As a cane user, I really like it. Not sure about the sword part though. Probably couldn't get through X-ray machines at airports or other events.
Thank you Tom! Ya a sword isn't real practical :)
good job...beautiful...
Thank you!
Very nice cane
Thanks buddy!
Ooh forget great video ☺️☺️
Glad you liked it!!
Craftsman!!
Thank you!
Nice turning in the base of that handle. I'm sure I'd have whacked my fingers more than once getting in tight like that!
I could not really see the clearance, etc. It looked pretty hazardous and really easy to go wrong.
Thanks, ya it was a little close :)
I enjoyed that...
Thanks Julie!
Cooooooool 👍👍👍👍
Belo trabalho !!!!!!!!
Obrigada!
Cool idea always wanted to make a cane but right don't have big enough lathe yet
You can do them in pieces too. Woodcraft has a kit www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-brass-cane-coupling-hardware
Nice work…
Thank you Norman!
A well made project, but it would be “Straight to Jail” where I stay !😢🏴
Thanks John 😁
COOL and GOOD.
COOL and GOOD.
Thank you!
Another nicely done project. However, beware as to where you go with it. Cane swords are considered concealed weapons and are illegal in some states.
Well, now I want one...
Carl,
This video inspired me
Where did you get the sword blank?
I looked a little and couldn’t find any. It would be a good project for myself.
Unfortunately I’m at that age!
😭🤪🤬😂
Thank you! I don't know where you can buy sword blanks. This is something I had laying around for years I think I found it at the yard sale.
Do you have any suggestions to finish a sycamore bowl??
KB
انت مبدع
شكرا جزيلا لك!!
Hi, where did you buy the attachement for the handle to cane? I am after one but can't seem to find one, i am in the UK.
Hi Ray, I can't remember where I got them but they're bands for duck calls. Good luck :)
How did you keep it from flexing while turning ?????
I used my hand to support it while I was turning the middle.
Was that a wood gouge in an oscillator tool that you used on the handle?
It's a Arbortech tool, amzn.to/3aaL2jV
Awesome, thank you! Definitely adding that to my list of tools I need!
Is a skew chisel less likely to cause chatter when turning long thin pieces?
No i don't think so there will always be chatter on long pieces. The best way to minimize it is with your hand or a steady rest.
Do you turn long pieces at the same rpm as shorter ones with same diameter?
Witch way is best for glueing wood to make a crook for a walking stick
I'm sorry, I don't quite know what you mean. If you want to email me, we can talk more about it. jacobson68@yahoo.com
And just subscribed
Thank you Lawrence!
I need to replace my handle i bought a real nice Damascus sword cane but the handle is plastic and i need to ewplace it before it breaks the shaft is small od
