We are spending 2 days in York, England, exploring historic sites, trying foods and drinks, and checking out the amazing things this city has to offer. We start our day at the York Minster, even climbing the tower to get the fantastic view from the top before heading to the Shambles, getting drinks at The Botanist, having afternoon tea at the famous Betty's tea room, grabbing a drink at a haunted pub (we later learned the alleged most haunted pub in York is actually the Golden Fleece). On our last day we check out the popular Ghost Merchants of York and get a Yorkshire Pudding wrap before heading on to Whitby.

Make sure you go to Witby it's where Bram Stoker wrote Dracula . Robin Hoods Bay is next to it!
Hope you bought your lucky duck a Whitby. Really hoping you visit Newcastle too D'ynahwitImeenlikepet? As we say here on the Tyne :) xx
Legend has it that if you kiss your true love outside the Cathedral, you stay together for life!
So when you moving to the UK
Recommend Saltaire in West Yorkshire, it’s a World Heritage site and model village. Specifically recommend: Guided tour of the village, Salts Mill, Roberts Park, River Walk, Shipley Glen Tramway, Shipley Glen, lots of places to eat and drink, for example SALT Brewery. It is also a film location for many movies and TV programmes.
As someone from York, and who works in the city centre it’s awesome to see it from a tourists point of view. It’s so easy to take it for granted and watching this has made me feel really lucky to live here ☺️
From York too and I agree completely with this!
Same
It is good to share with them because it's an experience they're not used to. I like to visit other countries.
The wife and I spent 4 days in York last month and fell in love with it. We stayed at an outstanding little B&B ( Bishop and Bison ) booked through our wonderful tour company (McKinlay Kidd) and enjoyed our entire stay. We loved the old town and its shops and pubs. The minster is treasure not to be missed. The Yorkshire Dales is so beautiful you have to keep telling yourself that it is actually real.
York is an amazing city. The National Railway Museum is a whole day out itself. Then there's the Jorvik Viking centre, boat trips on the river, the Shambles, the Minster... You could spend a week there.
Good point. I spent so long in the Railway Museum I had no time to see what else York has to offer. I remember thinking to myself how happy I'd be living in York. It truly is a beautiful city, and the residents are very friendly.
Was in York in August 2005 ,A Stunning city with a lot of history 🇺🇲❤️🇬🇧Enjoy the Shambles along with the Jorvik Centre is a must see to the Walls along with the Minster that needs seeing inside ,Just beautiful ❤️ The Cake shops are stunning with their Treats with afternoon Tea ☕🥧🍰,Pleased to see both of you from Stateside enjoying York's hidden treasures ,A bus tour is a must ,If a both of you are fans of trains ,See the National Railway museum to a boat tour on the River Ouse🇺🇲❤️🇬🇧Did all this in 2005 ❤️❤️❤️❤️love this City 🥰😘😍
I remember going on a school trip to York Minster in middle school. We all found it a bore. Now I’m older I really do appreciate the architecture and the history x
The next time you're in York you should definitely do one of the night-time ghost walk tours. A very fun and interactive way of learning about some of the history, myths and legends of the city.
The Deathly Dark Tours, we are on that In a few weeks
I second that. One of the best.
What are you on about you nutter there bloody awful I’ve lived in York my whole life and all of the are straight crap
As a York resident, I have to warn that they may be entertaining, but they are a poor way to learn the history. They are led by actors, and performing a script; they will admit that it necessarily has to be largely fictional or at least embellished. For those interested in the actual history of York though there are plenty of ways to explore it including The Jorvik Centre, Yorkshire Museum, Castle Museum Barley Hall, Fairfax House and many others.
@@warden330 Having lived in York, before emigrating, we loved everything about it. We're planning to visit next year.
I love York, been visiting since I was a child. Whitby is even closer so glad you made it there, too. Highly recommend Durham and / or Newcastle if you can get there, they are each a great day out for different reasons.
I lived in Yorkshire all my life and never been to the top of York Minster. Your video has made me want to give it a go. Great review of York 👍
The Smiths t-shirt made this video for me 😘I must compliment you guys on your research for this visit, you're going to loads of the right cities.
Smiths were crap
Viva Morrissey. 👌
@@xtraspecial4677 clearly not.
I like The Smiths, but The Cure is my favourite.
@@xtraspecial4677 cretin.
Never mind all the history of York, this ladies sheer enthusiasm and joy de vie is just infectious, may find re adjusting difficult when she eventually goes home.. boundless energy
York is my favourite city in the UK. It's in the best county as well (Yorkshire), although I'm biased on that one.
Glad you loved York as well!
The Shambles were originally butcher shops hence the name. The shops used to have fold down shelves (Shembles) outside on which were displayed various animal parts and joints of meat. The word Shambolic originates from the sight of these displays.
That’s interesting, never knew that.
Yes. There's a 'drain' which runs down the centre of the Cobbled street of the Shambles. It's where the blood, from the medieval butcher shops, drained into
Just found your channel and subscribed. I love York, it's full of history and things to see and do. I always visit in the off season when it's quieter and has fewer tourists. I'll be back there in March in fact. Looking forward to it. Cheers!
The way you present, produce and edit your content is so entertaining I almost feel I'm there with you both, so much so that I've just booked a trip to the UK myself !! Thank you so much.
Come on over! Hope you have a fantastic time and go back telling people not to believe the rubbish they've been told about our lovely land! The food is varied and fresh, oh, and it doesn't always rain either.... we're set for 32°c next week! 🔥🔥🔥 🥵🥵🥵 Hope you're able to come for a decent length of time like these two have, so you get to experience as much as possible! 😘😘😘
I hope you have a blast! Enjoy London, a bit, but definitely have a look outside of the capital. Bath, York and Cambridge are all beautiful and worthy of spending time in. Hire a car, if you dare drive on the correct side of the road! Good luck and let us know how you get on.
@@tamielizabethallaway2413 Come on, though. Give fair Weather information. I'm a Brit and it's NOT usual ( in fact it's rare, rare, rare to have temperatures in the mid 20's -30's!! Everyone moans if they do, because it never happens) Even in Summer, carry a light Mac or fold up umbrella. The Weather is VERY changeable!!
You didn't visit the Railway Museum? The best reason for visiting York!
And The Castle Museum, I was just thinking the same thing.
After having visited the Minster.
The BEST reason to visit York is to eat the locals Yorkshire pudding!! The people of york make them best! That's why it's perfectly reasonable to take people from York hostage and force them to cook you Yorkshire pudding!
Love the way you guys are so open minded and up for trying everything and anything in Britain! We take our history and our character too much for granted…so it’s great to watch you appreciate everything. Hope you had an absolute blast here!
I really love all your videos - I really do. You are lovely people. But don't forget that the motto of 'The York Ghost Merchants' shop is: "never give a sucker an even break!'
I'm glad you see you guys ventured outside London. There are so many better places to visit in England.
There was a Bishop of York in 314 AD, the first stone structure on the site was 637 AD, the current structure was started in 1220 AD
just coming here to say that, so well done in correcting those dates!
I also came here to fact check the minster dates haha
I live in York and it is so nice to hear your comments on our wonderful city, I noticed you visited a couple of places but there is oh! So much more to see in York we have the bar walls all the bars, the railway museum, York station, the museum, the castle, chocolate works and much much more.it would probably take days to visit everything……
Cracking little City so much History & things to see & do 👌
I have lived here for 12 years. I originally come from another part of the UK but can’t imagine living anywhere else. Also, I STILL love playing tourist in my own city.
The History of York
Is the History of England
York is lovely, you should try Lincoln as well another time, it has a castle with one of the four last copies of the Magna Carta and a victorian prison in the grounds and a cathedral a few hundred yards away.
They need a couple more days to explore the Castle Museum, which also houses Yorks old Prison. Then, the Yorvik Viking Centre which is amazing. We lived there for several years and really loved it
Absolutely love York, I'm from Newcastle but visit quite often as I collect ghosts from the York ghost merchants! If it was in April you visited I believe it was a couple of my friends getting engaged there! If you go again you should definitely visit the Golden Fleece (another most haunted pub!) And would definitely recommend the York Castle museum :)
I love York. I was fortunate to live there for a couple of years. Great city, very historical with the warmth you get from northern people. So glad you liked it
I live in York and it's so nice to see it through your eyes as you take it for granted when you live somewhere. It's a great city to be in.
Glad you guys made it up to Yorkshire, York is lovely and you didnt even see half of its attractions. Its a good base to explore other parts of the county its within 40 mins drive of almost anywhere :D Whitby is lovely I hope you pace yourselves on the steps.
Love the content keep up the good work.

I’m from the UK and live in a more rural area but if there was just one city I could choose to live in it would be York. It just feels like home whenever I’m lucky enough to visit. I love it there!
If you're in the UK go and look at Wales, Port Merrion is beautiful, head north and look at Scotland, there are so many beautiful places in the UK, watched your vid on Liverpool, my home town.
Just binge watched sooo many of your videos the last couple of days, im sad ive got to the end! Excited for more videos of your adventures. You guys are so cool and super genuine and cute!
Thank you for appreciating our history and culture. The UK is very old. You should try Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire, my home county. The oldest Cathedral in England.
I love Winchester Cathederal. I used to enjoy going to evening song
Being a Yorkshire girl, I loved watching you both explore York and it was beautiful hearing you speak so warmly about this amazing city. I'm excited that you will be visiting Whitby next!! It is by far one of my favourite places in the whole of Yorkshire!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts and reflections. Remember to look out for fossils if you venture onto the beach. Have fun 😀
Hi girl
We love York. York, the North Yorkshire Dales and Moors, The Lake District are our favourite places.
You mentioned the Cat Trail. It's a trail (the maps are available at the Cat Gallery, a super shop fir cat enthuiasts!), whereby you can wander through the city, finding the cats (not real ones!) On buildings throughout. Great way to see more of the city, too. Weirdly, we still haven't done it!
York Minster is fantastic. You should check out the one in Ripon, too. Smaller, but equally beautiful, and eight humorous little touches everywhere.
Were you told how 'Shambles' got its (medieval) name?
(It used to be where all the butchers lived, and they threw the bones and carcasses out the door toward the drain in the centre of the street)
In fact so many of York's city centre streets ('gates') have names indicating what you would encounter there, eg:
Swinegate - where you'd find the pig market
Coppergate - where you'd go for the services of a cooper (barrel maker - the storage containers of that time)
Monkgate - where the brethren hung out.
Colliergate - charcoal makers/sellers
Spurriergate - where you'd go for your spurs
Jubbergate - where the Jews lived
Deansgate - where the Dean lived (I'm guessing)
Gillygate - where the church of St.Giles used to be (now a Salvation Army Citadel)
Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate - where you'd go to get your whop-ma whipped.
Grape Lane - err... ...umm ...don't ask. (Just DON'T)
Haha. Your right about Grape Lane, it’s original name was Grope Lane……I’ll just leave it at that!! 😂😂
Gate is name for road.
@@catherinewilkins2760 it's name for Street in Old Norse
@@Dippy7520 excuse the language. But actually it was called Gropecunt Lane. Back in the day, it would reflect its function, aka prostitution, also where the swear word "cunt" came from.
Whipmawhopmagate actually means a sarcastic "THIS is a street??" or "call this a street?" or something along those lines.. often called the shortest street in the UK even though that's not technically true
(While I'm commenting on streets, fact checking the video it's worth noting that Shambles wasn't an inspiration for Rowling Diagon Alley btw, just for the film version)
I haven’t been to York but heard such good things about it and this has made my mind up…you always post such enthusiastic content.
I love watching your videos so much. So positive and I feel like I want to join you haha. Looking forward to your next videos.
Please visit the Peak District in Derbyshire, it's a beautiful area.
Great relaxing view of York I have visited many times but after your video I want to go again. Great job looking forward to the next one.
This is a great series, thanks for sharing.
Was there in 2019 and absolutely loved York, thankyou!
It's such a beautiful city! I've visited a lot through the years because it was a train ride away and was a good day out.
My hubby proposed there 5 years ago and we went again for our first anniversary. Some of those shops are new too, the little ghost shop and the fudge shop are definitely new so you've given me a reason to go back 😊
There's a little micro bar on the shambles called Valhalla its one of our favourite places to visit, it's a shame you never got to go but it is really niche, you wouldn't know it was there by just walking past.
york is my favourite city here, i’ve been so many times and i just never get sick of it! loved the vlog. i also loved how you guys went to the top, 270 steep steps is such a challenge but well worth it when you’re at the top! the going down is definitely easier than going up haha. the ghost merchants are always my favourite pit stop. thanks for sharing your travels! (:
I love York and visit at least once a year to get my 'Betty's fix' 😍
AWWWW Great seeing York through your eyes
Hi guys just loving your enthusiasm, great really interesting stuff cheers! Phil UK
Cara and Jeremy, I loved the quant little shops! ❤
Those tee shirts and Harry Potter items were right up my alley. ☺️
Sight seeing, finding beautiful architectural buildings and tasty treats are always a plus!😊
Another great video!❤
I'm loving you r tour of England, you are both great presenters. Much more please I am addicted to these reaction vlogs
I went to Uni in York in the late 90s and loved it so much I stayed there for a few years. Some friends took me back as a surprise for my 40th and it didn't feel the same sadly. Homeless people, run down areas, graffiti, and a lot more commercialisation. Still nicer than most places though and maybe I was more oblivious to the negatives when I was younger and wide eyed. Nice to watch a tour guys, glad you liked it.
Given you just described a better version of York in the late 90s than the reality, you must have either been doing some incredible drugs, or just have been socially unaware. By 2000, York was one of the homeless capitols in the UK - graffiti was everywhere as the old decrepit buildings were yet to be torn down and replaced and it was always highly commercially focused.
This lady is so poitive and jolly,an ideal person to go on holiday with.
You make me appreciate my country so much more. I actually live not too far from York but I’ve not been ages.
I absolutely love your uk travelogue. My favourite places, York and next Whitby ( fish & Chips to die for) 🇬🇧
Thank you!
This was great, as always. I’m really enjoying your tour around the UK and I don’t want it to end! 🥰 I’ve never been to York, and it’s a long way from where I am in Cornwall now, but it’s on my UK bucket list. I’m a huge history nerd and I want to go to the Viking centre and explore the city. It seems similar to Chester, which is a place I love.
York has a much bigger historic centre than Chester.
aww, you guys are so complimentary about our country, thankyou!, your now heading towards where we live on the east Yorkshire coast, you may travel across the moors to get to the wonderful, very popular Whitby, and by the way there s more steps there, up to the abbey , haha, so glad your enjoying your tour, stay safe, and awaiting your next instalment!
Can't wait for your Whitby trip,my favourite town in the UK and fish and chips at "the MAGPIE" are unbelievable, stay happy and healthy ✌️
It all looks amazing! Always enjoy your videos 🥰
York is my favourite City in the world. I love its history - particularly the Viking and the Medieval history . I’m so glad that you enjoyed it too. Over the years it has become too touristy I guess and October/November visits are the best time to visit I feel. The history of The Shambles can bring, into sharp focus, what a gross and vile place that it once was…the hooks which you saw on many of the building attest to it’s real history! I hope you managed to do a nighttime “ghost walk” …there the true magic of York comes truly alive. Happy Travels both of you XXX
Snap!
Is there a specific ghost walk you recommend?
Glad you loved your visit to York, love visiting the city. Glad you found the Hog Roast shop too.
I lived there for 10 months with my Dad during 2010 and it really is a LOVELY city STEEPED in history and I would implore anyone to visit the place even just for a day!
You must visit Chatsworth house in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District with the nearby Town of Bakewell, famous for its Tarts and Puddings. Also the nearby Town of Chesterfield with its famous Crooked spire for you to climb.
Lincoln is another great historical City with Cathedral.
So nice to see you enjoying your journeys in the UK.
I've been waiting for this ,I love York not been for ages.
A new subscriber here and I have binged watched loads of your videos.already haha. Love the content. I'm from the UK and you have both visited way more places than I have over here
I’ve been watching since you were doing the UK tasting videos. Makes me so happy that you’re finally visiting UK and to see you’re doing everything right! The Yorky Pud wrap made my day. I crave those almost daily. It’s a shame you didn’t have time for Yorvik Viking museum, Castle Museum or a ghost walk. But always good to have something to look forward to for next time I guess 🙂 Speaking of which, next time you visit the UK, we’d be happy to help show you around Wales (the south bit at least) 😊 🏴
So happy you enjoyed your visit to my home city! Come back soon👍😁x
I`m glad you enjoyed York, It really is a special place. There is so much history in a relatively small place.
I've lived in York for the past year and the roots of the city quickly found their way into my heart. Interesting to note that there was a Norman minster or church built aorund 1086, only about 20 years after the Norman conquest, and the current minster is built upon its foundations - hence the wide nave of the minster, as you commented on!
Lovely video guys - and York is my home city 🥰 so much more to see - fossgate is amazing as is a walk around the walls and visit to Cliffords Tower, but for one day you certainly saw and experienced a lot. I believe The Golden Fleece is actually the most haunted pub in York and is on Pavement at the far end of Shambles.
So glad you came up north
Really pleased that you both fell in love with my historic and breathtakingly beautiful County Town, York - the capital of 'God's own County' - and had a brilliant time there. Looking forward to your vlog on Whitby and I hope you got yourselves some Whitby Jet.
York is the county town, leeds is the capital for gdp population etc now dye yer hair and do one
Ah, my home, born and grew up in York, my eldest Daughter went to Uni and they had their graduation ceremony in York Minster, apparently if you graduate at YM you can marry there too but there is a 20yr waiting list! Remember watching the YM on fire from across the City from my bedroom window in 1984, it was heart breaking and I cried and cried willing them to put it out and save York's most beautiful, historic jewel.
A tip for anyone visiting York for the first time, to get to the Minster go down High Petergate (from Bootham Bar) when you get close to the end of High Petergate, stop, close your eyes then look up, takes your breath away.
Was in York forever ago, but I absolutely loved it and hope to visit it again! Love The Smiths shirt!
Love the The smith T-shirt. Our first wedding dance was to
🎼‘There is light that never goes out’ 🎶
York is such a nice city - although I’ve only been a handful of times, usually to visit the railway museum. On one occasion I found a food festival going on too, which was rather nice.
Another great video. Really enjoying your content!
If you are continuing to head north you should visit the lake district and in particular Windermere where there is a pub called the hole in the wall which Charles Dickens visited often. Love watching your vlogs.
Betty’s tea shop! Famous for their fat rascals. The cake recipe’s on line. A friend made me two as a treat just before I went into hospital. Unfortunately, he ran out of glacé cherries during covid lockdown so instead of two cherries as usual, there was only one on the top of the two cakes he gave me. I opened up the bag. I was a bit surprised at the sight, so I asked him, “Did you really mean to give a woman about to undergo breast surgery two cakes with one big red cherry on top?” Now they’re known as nipple cakes.
Really loved Betty’s , really disliked Fat Rascals, (( mixed peel ) !,,,,
Love your trips around England.
Thank you for watching!
I really should take more advantage of my own doorstep!! Love your videos
So glad you got to visit York, as a Yorkshire lass I'm biased but it really is a fantastic city, hope you got to see a little bit more of our beautiful county on your travels.
as a Lancashire LAD.. i feel like a traitor (LOL) saying i love york
I had the luck to work in York in the 80s for a few years and I must agree, York is one of the most amazing cities in the world.
York is lovely but I love Chester (in Cheshire) as a Roman City, with all the medieval buildings, cathedral, the River, the ruins and the Roman walls. It’s a beautiful City.
been a student in both, york has older buildings. York tends to be more sunny. esp in winter.
Chester
York was founded by the Romans as well. Built on top of a Fort built by the VIIII Legion. Chester was base for the XX Legion for over 200 years.
Seems you missed the national railway museum, museum of York and Jorvik centre
You walked by it in The Shambles there is a tiny chapel dedicated to our Saint Margaret Clitherow , she lived in The Shambles and was put to death by Elizabeth The First for her Catholic beliefs . It’s the Golden Fleece that’s the most haunted pub . York is called the Chocolate City the home to two famous factories Rowntrees and Terrys , Rowntrees now unfortunately Nestle makes 4 million Kit Kats a day !
Our history goes back over 2000 years and gave its name to New York , I love my city so glad you enjoyed
Terry's was closed by Kraft in 2005. Now converted into flats.
You are going to miss all this when you go home but you have lovely memories to look back on until you return again.
I wasn't in that haunted pub, but when I spent a week there a few years ago, I went to the Golden Fleece a few times.
It really is a fantastic city to visit.
Loved this vlog ❤️
Walking the city walls is a fantastic thing to do, about 3 miles and gives a different perspective of the city, a cruise on the river ouse the merchant adventurers hall the jorvik centre the shambles , the castle museum , cliffords tower this city has got the lot !
Well done on getting to the top.
Loving your travels
I love York. You really showed off the Shambles well, I really fancy going again now.
Ah your just down the road from me! Hope you’ve enjoyed touring round York and Whitby. I recommend going to Goathland
Absolutely agree. Steeped in history and absolutely stunning!
Glad you enjoyed York. I have lived in York most of my life. I have moved around the country but always find myself back here.
Awww! So happy you are loving our country! 🇬🇧
There are so many beautiful places to see over here!
I really want to visit the 🇺🇸
😊love watching your videos! 🤗
Xx
So pleased you enjoyed my home city
So true we luv York it’s stunning city
York great fun great video
I'm from London & I love York. Betty's is a wonderful tea room.
I love York, it's my favourite city in England. I think that you covered all of the major sights too.
