Nice presentation. However, I'm bit confused about what are you taking as reference north? Is it aircraft heading? So you tell if vor is south east. Is it respect to aircraft's nose? Then in that case the direction of vor would keep changing according to aircrafts heading. And we dont know what is aircrafts heading. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to keep the reference north as simply magnetic north?
correct me if I am wrong but your second example is wrong. what I see is that You are actually in north north east of the station. in fact you are on 026 radial.

Not trying to bust your chops, but tell me if I'm wrong about this - The first question is "what is your position relative to the VOR" but the first example ends up telling us the VOR's position relative to the aircraft. In other words, you answered the OPPOSITE question to the one posed, making the video confusing. I had to watch it 3 times to figure it out.
I'm afraid to say that if you are unable to understand that if "you are North of NY" is the same as "NY is South of you", becoming a pilot is a questionable choice.
This method seems to make sense but I'm a little confused about the VOR reading at 2:37. Using this method, the plane should be northwest of the station but with 210 dialed in and the "to" flag displayed, doesn't that mean you're inbound on the 210 radial? That would place the plane roughly northeast of the station, wouldn't it?
It's a nice method. Maybe that works in an exam. But in reality unfortunately it doesn't work. For example the second question. The needle shows, that you are only 4 degree away from the actual VOR setting. 4 degrees in the east direction (from 210) is still SW. Put it in a flight simulator, if you don't believe me. Also in the first question could the right answer SE, but of course more likely is NE the right answer. Or do I overlook something?

Just try putting it in a simple simulation: HDG 045, OBS 045 with FROM indication and VOR will show us the SAME EXACT POSITION OF THE AIRCRAFT BETWEEN RADIAL 055 AND 135 RADIAL (same exact position of the VOR even though the aircraft is NE or SE) TO and FROM regions begin 90 degrees on both sides of the selected radial SO THE METHOD DOES NOT SHOW PERFECTLY CORRECT EVERY TIME. SORRY, NOT TRYING TO BE A SMART ASS.. try online sim luizmonteiro.com IT IS FREE and use the example I have used. GOOD LUCK!
+Matija Rajkovic First of all this method works 100% of the time (keep in mind that is you are within full deflection then you should look only at the flag and realize you are within 10º of the Top/Bottom number the flag points to). I do not believe I need to test this in a simulator (I have over 12,000 hours of flight time and 10,000 of those are instruction given in airplanes. If you have a full deflection than this method is perfect. If you are within full deflection you need to use your brain and knowledge a little harder. Finally in your example you mention the DG (the VOR has no clue what the DG is doing and there is no relationship between them) and you also do not mention whether the CDI is left or right. Assuming the needle is fully deflected to the left, in your scenario, then you would proceed West to get to the station as you are East of it (Both the needle and the flag point to the west). Let's assume setting the N and S of HSI to horizontal line N=original position of west. The arrow points to 320 degree (down left) and the yellow line in the middle moves "upward". What will be the direction?
Carrot To intercept the radial you would fly a heading of 005 as you would intercept at a 45º angle (on an HSI "connect the needles"). The station is probably North of you. If less than a full deflection then the station is NNW of you.
The answer is correct and the logic is correct but the direction of the aircraft is wrong if the heading is stable and we have just tuned in. The flag simply tells you the signal is behind you. That is why the question puts the disclaimer : denoting aircraft position and hence not direction . Devious! So guys if you try to Match Heading and your location no simulation will give you this figure. All the question says is where , with respect to the VOR.
The flag points to the South and the Needle towards the West. This means you need to fly South West to get to the station. This also means that you are North East of it. Out of the 3 answers only #8 is on the NE quadrant.

Markus Agricola Trust me it works all the time. You just need to think a little harder if the needle is not fully deflected.
