- Sorry for the clickbait title, but I honestly do believe that Brothers in Arms is one of the best WW2 videogame series that has ever been made. It's not perfect, but that's why we're playing it with Rendroc's WarZone mod!

Something I love about this mod is that it allows extreme customization of the firearms and how you, the enemy and your allies handle the weapons.
Want the guns to all be one-hit killers? Want a pistol to be as accurate as a sniper rifle? Want the enemy AI to be able to potentially hit you from a mile away? Want your allies to be a little more tanky? So many variables just with some basic files that can be edited with notepad, all provided by Rendroc. His mod took a good game and made it insanely good.
The greatest comparison for how competent and dangerous the AI becomes was my experiences on the first Carentan level.
Unmodded, the first soldiers we encountered were deadly against me, but barely could hit my allies once they were behind cover. Likewise, my allies couldn't do anything either. The distance was extremely short and in reality this should have been a short firefight, but so long as I stayed in cover and allowed the fight to carry on, it never ended. I literally was able to walk away from my PC, make a sandwich, eat it, use the restroom and then return to the firefight still happening. The moment I stuck my head out from cover, I was shot. Frustrating. Nobody even once attempted to toss a grenade on either side. What?
Modded, this same encounter went in an entirely different direction within five seconds. Someone hits and kills a German before he gets to cover. One of my guys gets nicked just before reaching cover. I'm hit and manage to hit the guy in return. I duck into cover and spot Red pulling a grenade, so I follow suit and chuck one over the wall too. I see *two* German grenades coming our way at the same time. I'm diving away from them and spot one of my guys picking one up off the ground and chucking it wildly away from us, but the other goes off and knocks me on my ass and dusts a squadmate. I'm still hearing the gunshots echoing around me as I stagger back to my feet. I peer around the corner and see lots of blood splattered on the wall where the Germans were hiding. At least one guy is still alive, so we flank and make short work of him.

Its cool that they made suppression and flanking a viable tactic in a video game. But it's not enough to carry a whole campaign and compared to its contemporaries and games in the subgenre of tactical shooters which came out before it, the gameplay was dated upon release. Hell, even Unreal Tournament had more squad commands than this game and it's an arena shooter.
